Coalition against Racism

Internship, Volunteering, Remote Internship

An internship or volunteering with the Coalition against Racism in Israel provides the opportunity to gain insight into the complexity of the political situation in Israel and Palestine and to bring the backgrounds and positions, interests and needs of different groups of opinion into context. We organize internships and volunteering in the areas of communications and public relations, human rights work, politics, sociology and other similar fields.

This placement is possible as a Remote / Virtual internship from home! The tasks for Remote Interns are the same as for on-site interns (see details below). The remote internship is 450 EUR for the first month and 100 EUR additionally for any additional month or part thereof. Just submit the inquiry/order form form and mention "Remote Internship"!

What is your placement organisation doing?

The Coalition against Racism in Israel has, since 2003, been committed against discrimination and racism and has the aim to abolish racism in Israel. They work to raise awareness of the problems caused by racial discrimination among decision makers in the public, stakeholders, including individuals and organizations, in civil society, politics and society to delegitimize it in all its forms.

The coalition brings together some 40 non-governmental organizations that advocate the rights, interests and aspirations of minorities and disadvantaged people in Israel. They include people of Russian origin, Palestinians in Israel, Ethiopians, Mizrahi and refugees. Human rights organizations who deal with the rights of women, children and people with special needs are also involved in the coalition.

The coalition has set itself the goal to address the following related problems:

  • Racism is partially legitimized by the lack of adequate framework for the protection of minority rights
  • Racial Profiling and the violation of the freedom of movement in public
  • Incitement against minorities and ethnic groups from political and religious leaders, public figures and the media
  • Increased racial violence against ethnic and minority groups in Israel
  • The persistence of negative stereotypes against the Arab minority and other marginalized groups

The Coalition monitors against racism by political and religious leaders and media publications in Amharic, Arabic, Hebrew and Russian, and comments on cases of racist or discriminatory comments or sues them in some cases.

The coalition also pursues discrimination and violence by members of the police and conducts training programs for the police in the field of human rights.

Furthermore, lobbying is carried out in ministries such as the Ministry of Education, to convince them to invest in human rights work and an anti-racism plan for institutions, and to ensure compliance with existing anti-discrimination laws. Teachers are trained in tolerance and anti-racism by the member organization "Psychoactive”.

Clubs and entertainment venues such as bars and dance halls, where there is discriminating selection of members and guests are sued.

Events like "Culture against Racism" are held, which bring together Jewish and Arab populations, with concerts featuring Jewish and Arab artists.

In Galilee, a region where many ethnic groups, nationalities, religions and races live segregated lives and maintain prejudiced and racist attitudes towards members of other groups, activities for young people aged 15-18 years are carried out. The aim is that young people who will later enter the army, study at universities and enter the workforce will take a clear stand against racism and discrimination within their groups.

In 2015, a bus was travelling through Israel, with emphasis on the regions of Galilee, Negev and Muthallath, where Jewish and Arab activists from their respective regions and all over Israel participated and engaged in dialogue with the people of the villages and towns. In order to reach a wider audience, the Bus Campaign was also be recorded on video and celebrities have joined to initiate a major media campaign with the purpose of stimulating public discussion.

How can you get involved?

  • Reading and analysis of texts, reports and statistics on the political situation, as well as about minorities and disadvantaged groups and their position in Israel
  • Writing about current events, background information, current projects, discrimination in everyday life, etc.
  • Translation activities (e.g. Arabic-English; English-Arabic; English-Russian etc.) depending on the particular language skills
  • Communications and Public Relations - building contacts with foundations and organizations, networking
  • Participation in seminars and network meetings

As an interns at CAR you typically won't work directly with clients, but the focus is on theoretical work. You should have basic previous experience in research and scientific work and you should enjoy to write texts and reports. Around 95% is computer work that you will do on your own.

To apply, please email your CV/resume in English, including your computer and language skills, and other relevant experience. Also please add a letter of motivation in English.

Topics and activities are dependent on the current political events.

Tamra is part of the metropolitan area Haifa-Akko-Tamra . These three cities are located only 15-30 minutes drive away from each other, and are accessible by buses, train (Akko-Haifa) and taxis. One can easily move between these three places and should look at the three locations as a common metropolitan area.

Tamra (25,000 inhabitants) is located on the hills which rise behind the plains of Akko. With clear weather, from Akko you have a fantastic view over Akko and the Mediterranean Sea. For this reason, Tamra is a popular town for short trips for people from the neighbouring cities, who enjoy Tamra's attractively priced traditional Arabic restaurants.

The town is dominated by Arabic Israelis living in extended family clans. Arts, culture and community are highly valued in Tamra; many citizens are highly educated and have studied abroad. They are particularly friendly and open towards foreigners and it is easy for our participants to get integrated into the town community.

Tamra is also famous for its extravagant weddings. There are several locations where weddings are celebrated. During the "wedding season", from May to October, Tamra hosts 7-10 large weddings every day.

The historical port town of Akko (also: Akkon) has around 50,000 inhabitants. Its old town atmosphere is very oriental. Akko has been mentioned in the bible's Old Testament; Alexander the Great, the Romans, Sultan Saladin, and the Crusaders have all been to Akko. Napoleon didn't succeed to conquer the city though. The old town of Akko as a UNESCO World Heritage site is part of every Israel round trip. During the summer, Akko's beach is very populated, and Akko's Arabian market is a popular location for tourists and locals alike.

Haifa (270,000 inhabitants) is after Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, Israel's third largest city. It is a city full of life as there are more than 40,000 students studying at Haifa University and numerous colleges. For that reason, Haifa has a wide selection of bars and clubs. During the summer, the beaches behind Mount Carmel are populated at day and night by young people.

Between Haifa, Akko and Tamra there are not only olive and pomegranate plantations, but also the so-called "Krayots" which are several villages belonging to the wider area of Haifa. They have modern entertainment facilities such as multiplex cinemas, bars and bowling allies.

Recreational Activities in Tamra/Akko/Haifa

There are numerous ways to spend leisure time in Tamra, Akko and Haifa. All cities are full of cultural life. During the hot summer, you can go to the beaches; Tamra also has a public swimming pool.

Day trips in Israel, which can be done from Akko/Tamra/Haifa, include visiting mystical historical sites such as Jerusalem, Nazareth, Safed, the Sea of Galilee and Magito, where, according to the prophecy of Jews, Christians and Muslims alike, the final battle of "Armageddon" will take place. In the nature of the hilly north, it is possible to hike, mountainbike and even ski in the winter time.

Getting To Tamra

israel map

You book your flight to Tel Aviv (TLV). Look for different airlines, including low cost airlines such as Easyjet, Air Berlin, German Wings, Pegasus Airlines and flyniki. Tip: Search also for nearby Airports in neighboring European countries.

At the airport of Tel Aviv, you can find the train station; the train departs hourly to Akko (also the whole night). From Akko train station, you will be picked up and taken to your accommodation in Tamra.

Please note that from Fridays 4.00 p.m. to Saturdays 4.00 p.m., and on Israeli holidays, no trains run, making it difficult to get from Tel Aviv airport to Akko. You should not book a flight that lands on Fridays after 2.00 p.m. or leaves on Saturdays before 9.00 p.m. We even recommend completely avoiding Saturdays for arrival and departure.

On other days of the week, your flight should not arrive after 7.00 p.m., as the Akko train station pick-up service from 11.00 p.m. – 8.00 a.m. is not possible. If you cannot book your flight otherwise, you would have to spend a night in Tel Aviv, before you continue traveling to Akko.

Volunteering on Organic Farms in Israel

farmwork israel

Hospitality and innovative farming techniques

We arrange organic farming volunteer work on various farms in Israel. Not only will you have a great time together with the local staff on the farms and other foreign volunteers and you will have a chance to get to know rural life and the hospitality of the Israeli and Arab farmers, but you can also learn about plant breeding and animal husbandry in climatic conditions which can be extreme, making use of innovative techniques such as drip irrigation and permaculture.

As a volunteer, you typicall get free food, either prepared on the farm and/or the form of ingredients to cook on your own.  Accommodation rental costs will incur, which vary from location to location. The volunteer work can be joined for a period of 1-12 weeks.

Below are some examples of farms in Israel.

You can volunteer at an organic farm in Tamra/Israel, cultivating vegetables, olives and pomegranates, and making use of innovative sustainable techniques such as aquaponics, composting and permaculture.

Organic vegetable farm in the Ayalon Valley

The organic farm in the Ayalon Valley between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem grows more than 100 types of organic vegetables, lettuce, herbs, peas, beans, beets and corn all year round on 25 acres of open fields and in greenhouses, without the use of pesticides and artificial fertilizers. The farm is operated on the concept of "Community Supported Agriculture" with customers signing up for membership and receiving weekly delivery of farm produce. A weekly newsletter informs customers about the work on the farm and there are also regular open days.

Volunteer work on the farm is possible, with the farm taking over the entire catering for the volunteers. There is however no accommodation on the farm. We can assist with booking a room in Tel Aviv that incurs rental costs.

Olives, figs, lemons, pomegranates - Organic farm in Tamra

This organic farm in the town of Tamra in the north of Israel uses innovative ways for sustainable agriculture and thus, offer a way to renounce environmentally harmful techniques and the use of pesticides; they also find a way to recycle waste. This includes techniques such as permaculture, aquaponics and hydroponics. Olives, lemons, figs, spices, pomegranates and more are grown on the farm and various types of free-range chicken are kept.

Organic waste is efficiently processed on the farm through the breeding of larvae of the black soldier fly. Organic wastes serve as food for the larvae of the black soldier fly. They plow through the organic waste and the decomposed waste is used as a particularly nutritious feed for the chickens and fish of the eco-farm. This saves money for the purchase of feed on the one hand, and at the same time, is a solution for the disposal of organic waste. Organic waste is also dried in the sun and used as chicken feed. The eco-farm has a partnership with a local supermarket. The supermarket supplies organic waste to the farm and in turn gets sustainable products at a reduced price. This co-operation and the awareness raised about the healthy foods that are grown under environmentally friendly conditions, benefit the consumer.

Possible activities for volunteers and interns include:
  • Creating flower beds, planting, sowing (seasonal)
  • Harvesting (seasonal)
  • Assisting in the processing of the collected organic waste for reuse; sort by type of organic waste and compost
  • Preservation of fruits and vegetables
  • Care and Maintenance of Ecological Farm
  • Construction of greenhouses and technical installations such as aquaponics systems
  • Care of the animals

This is how it works:

1. You send us your resume in English in tabular form and you let us know your preferred period. This is without any obligation or cost to you.
2. We will then within a few days suggest a farm in Israel to you and will let you know the exact accommodation costs and conditions of the farm

School for Environmental Awareness and Agriculture

Praktikum und Volunteering möglich

The school for environmental awareness and agriculture is a voluntary service held in the afternoons. Children and young people can participate in activities there and attend courses on nature and the environment, creating art from waste materials, plant growing and healthy eating. You can teach these subjects independently or with the local teachers at this school and conduct workshops.

Project Details

The school was founded in 1996 by the Israel Ministry of Education and has been growing ever since. The children attend school on a voluntary basis; and several children attend.

There are five teachers and five classes; there is a strong family feeling amongst the teachers and students. Subjects taught to children are on the environment of Israel, awareness for conservation, recycling, planting of fruits and vegetables, food production and nutrition. There are several greenhouses and outdoor gardens where vegetables and fruits are grown and that the students can take home. Further, the school has a small bakery where the students bake bread and Arabic Pizza every day, following traditional recipes.

The aim is that the children learn about the importance of environmental conservation, where the food that they get every day from supermarkets comes from, how it is produced and processed, and how to have a healthy nutrition.

Even though the school is highly popular and has close ties with the municipal primary schools, it is on a very tight budget, as it is not subsidized, but only financed through the contribution that every student pays, which is only 40 Shekel (around 8 €/12 USD) per year for 120 hours.

The school also has an art studio where rubbish is recycled into art.

Volunteers can assist the local teachers, but can also suggest their own topics and carry out their own projects with the children.

Tamra Senior Center

Praktikum und Volunteering möglich

In the Senior Center of Tamra, there are 35-50 senior citizens who eat together daily, perform sports and exercise, as well as make handicrafts. There are regular events that are conducted here. Volunteering and internships with the elderly can be arranged here.

At the Center, about 35 to 50 seniors (both women and men) from Tamra and surrounding areas attend from Sunday to Thursday. They decide for themselves how often they want to go to the Center. Some come every day, while others, only two or three times a week. In the mornings, many are picked up from their home by bus and meet at 8.00 a.m. in a senior citizens' club, where they first have breakfast together. At about 1.30 p.m., after lunch, they go back home. There are 12 employees working at the Senior Center.

The daily program is designed to enable variety. The seniors have access to a small library and gym equipment; there is a "keep-fit” system in the garden. Regular physiotherapy is offered. The seniors can play games and take part in pottery and handicraft making.

The premises is divided into sections for men and women and includes lounges, rest rooms, the dining room, and prayer rooms.

The Senior Center invites outsiders for events on a regular basis; upto 150 visitors can attend a theatre performance.

There are several opportunities to get involved as an intern or volunteer. You can get involved in nursing as well as act as a guide for the senior citizens’ activities. This is what the multi-purpose room and an outdoor area are used for. In addition, you can help in the kitchen where the seniors themselves occasionally, cook. Similarly, you can help the "laundry” since the senior citizens' club offers its visitors the service of laundering their clothes as well.

Since 2007, the School of Music has a two floor modern building in Shefa-Amer with 15 classrooms and a large hall. There is also a recording studio and a music library.

The music styles of the groups include classical European music, Arabic and Palestinian music as well as rock, pop and jazz.

In addition, there are three choirs, including a children's choir for children up to 11 years, one for adolescents 12 to 18 years and a choir for oriental music.

The school carries out a pilot project , a scholarship granted to 60 musically-talented Palestinian children from 8-10 years who come from difficult family situations.
