World Adventure Itinerary

Voluntourism ZanzibarDay 1
Arrival by flight to Zanzibar airport and transfer to your accommodation.

Day 2
Volunteering at St. Monica. You will be picked up at your accommodation in the morning and taken to the volunteer placement. At 3.00 p.m., you will then be picked up and given an approximately 2-hour tour of Stone Town, the historic part of Zanzibar Town.

Spice TourDay 3
After you have completed the second morning at your volunteer placement, you have a "Spice Tour", a tour of a spice plantation in the afternoon. Besides exotic spices, tropical fruits are grown here that you can see, smell and taste.

voluntourism in sansibarDay 4
Full-day trip "Safari Blue“. From Fumba in the South of Zanzibar, on a dhow, the traditional sailing ship of the Indian Ocean, you will explore the natural wonders of Menai Bay. There will be a fruit snack on a sandbank, you can snorkel at a coral reef and swim in a lagoon. On an island there will be a beach barbecue with fish, lobster, chicken, vegetables and a tropical fruit tasting. You can also learn how to navigate a “Ngalawa”, the outrigger canoe of the local fishermen. In Menai Bay it is often possible to see dolphins. In the late afternoon, we will sail back to Fumba. Alcoholic beverages are inclusive.

Day 5
In the morning, you are at your volunteer placement. The afternoon is free, which you can use to explore Stone Town, either alone or with other volunteers. There are many small shops from which you can buy souvenirs.

Cultural Art Centre WorkshopDay 6
In the morning, volunteering. In the afternoon, you take part in a Workshop at the Zanzibar Cultural Arts Centre, offered by local artisans. Depending on availability, you can make craft with paper, make candles, produce soap, do painting, make necklaces made of paper beads or do screen printing on a t-shirt.

Jozani ForestDay 7
Full day tour! The day starts with a visit of the Jozani Forest National Park, which is famous for its endemic Red Colobus Monkeys. Besides some colonies of monkeys, you can see the impressive plants and trees of this tropical rainforest and you can have a stroll through the mangrove area. After this, we will drive to the Zanzibar Butterfly Centre, East Africa’s largest covered space for butterflies, which is a project of sustainable tourism. As the butterflies only live for a few weeks, the centre is in constant need of new butterflies. These are bred by the villagers of the nearby village under the guidance of a biologist named Pete and sold to the butterfly centre.

ZALA ParkAfterwards, we visit the handcraft project “MOTO”, where we will first have lunch. Then, we will see how a women’s cooperative produces wickerwork and braided objects. They also weave Kikoi fabrics that they tint, making use of solar technology. You can even try out everything yourself! Another highlight is a visit to the Zala Park in Muungoni. It is a small zoo, mainly with reptiles, which was created by biology teacher Mohammed, to educate children about the importance of animal welfare and environmental protection. We had a few interns and volunteers working with Mohammed, who have improved and expanded the scope with the teacher. You return to your accommodation in the late afternoon.

If you spend the second week in Muungoni, you stay there throughout.

Day 8
The second week, you can either continue to spend in the city, or in Muungoni, or in Nungwi. Muungoni is a farming and fishing village in the south of Zanzibar, where little has changed in the last hundreds of years. You will find a piece of original Zanzibar, which was hardly influenced by tourism and modern development. You can choose between accommodation on full board with a local host family of simple standards or at our Mother Nature Forest Camp. Nungwi, in the north of Zanzibar, however, is a lively seaside village with a lot of tourism. In  Nungwi you can experience Zanzibar in both its rural life in the village, as well as aspects of beach tourism. In Nungwi, you live at the bungalow of the Marine Sea Turtle Conservation Sanctuary on full board (or similar accommodation, if not available).

If you are in Muungoni, then you start the morning of the 8th day with volunteering at the Mother Nature environmental conservation program or at the village school. If you continue in Nungwi, then you are transferred in the morning to your accommodation at the sea turtle bungalow, and you will start your volunteer assignment on the same day. If you stay in town, you continue with your previous volunteer assignment.

Days 9-12
