Non-Profit Medical and Nursing Facility

Volunteering Possible
Sociedad Vicente de Paul welcomes volunteering in nursing and the medical field. It is also particularly interested in professionals from the fields of nutrition counselling, dental and laboratory equipment.

Project Details

Sociedad San Vicente de Paul is a Catholic charitable organization which is active on a world-wide level. In León they operate a nursing home for sick people, offering general medical treatments and consultations, dental treatments, laboratory services and support for malnourished children.
The nursing home was founded in 1989. It is located next to the large public hospital HEODRA, accommodating patients who don't have anyone looking after them. As in many other countries, HEODRA hospital doesn't provide any meals, laundry service etc., but it is expected that the patient's family members deal with these issues. San Vicente de Paul offers these services (accommodation, breakfast, dinner, laundry service) for free for those who cannot count on the help of anyone. The home also administrates the patient’s supply of medicines. There is a dorm for 10 men and a dorm for 10 women, both with their own bathroom.
In 2011, 1,798 persons were able to benefit from the nursing home's services, particularly women and children.
Besides this, from Monday to Friday from 7.30 a.m. to 3.00 p.m., there is medical consultation and treatments, performed by nurses; once per week, a general practitioner joins. A symbolic contribution of 1 USD is expected for the medical service, while medicines are still supplied totally free of charge. In 2011, 12,630 patients were able to benefit from this service and 37,890 prescriptions were issued.
Since 2000, Monday to Friday from 8-11 a.m. and from 1-3 p.m., dental treatments are being offered; 4 female dentists rotate their shift. In 2011, 3,153 persons benefitted from dental treatments.
The laboratory was started in 2003. From 7.30 a.m. to 10 a.m., Monday to Friday, basic laboratory tests are offered, including complete blood count, malaria test, urine test, scatoscopy, and blood sugar test. There are no funds for further examinations. In 2011, 4,830 tests were carried out.
Since 2006, San Vicente de Paul in León has been running a program to support malnourished children. Nutrition plans are made, food supplies are provided to mothers, and the mothers are educated about nutrition issues, (always considering their very limited financial recourses), and weight and condition of the children are also checked. In 2011, 50 malnourished children aged 6 months to 10 years were supported. Besides this, 7 malnourished adults have also been treated.
Volunteer positions are possible at Sociedad San Vicente de Paul for anyone who can contribute qualified professional support, such as nurses, physicians, dentists, nutritionists and laboratory technicians.
