At the primary school of the village Hajrat Nhal, which is about 25 km outside of Tangier in the nature reserve Lac Tahaddart, volunteers and interns can participate in a variety of educational activities including teaching French.
Project Details
The primary school of the village Hajrat Nhal was awarded an international "green" label, for incorporating a program that exists nowhere else in Morocco: environmental education and awareness activities are integrated as an integral part of the curriculum, which also includes activities for the parents of children.
The village is located in the nature reserve "Lac Tahaddart", about 25 km outside of Tangier, which is a wetland with rich biodiversity - an important refuge for many birds such as bustards.
The driving force behind the project is the school principal Mr. Mrabet, who is also very active in environmental protection, improving standards of education in the rural area, as well as local culture and traditions, and has restarted several NGOs and local initiatives. The families from the rural area are generally of low-income, low educational level and only have basic knowledge of French.
In recent years, the following programs and activities were implemented:
* An environmental club at school
* School garden with fruits and vegetables, ornamental plants and medicinal plants, which is operated by the students and in which they learn about botany, horticulture and environmental protection
* Making a printed guide about plants of the region
* Workshops in resource use, waste sorting, recycling and composting
* Educational activities with students and parents about childhood, health and environment at other schools in the region
* Construction of a traditional wood oven with mothers of the students. The oven is used every day to bake bread for the school canteen
* Measures against early school leaving
* Cooperation with other schools in the region and abroad

The students are taught concepts such as the fight against desertification, renewable energy, water and resource use, preservation of fauna, flora and cultural heritage, sustainability and awareness of nature and the environment, which are usually not topics addressed in public schools.
The school has 19 classrooms. 19 teachers teach at the school, and there are about 500 students with equal number of boys and girls.
Volunteers and interns can be included in all activities of the school. In addition to the activities described above, they can also teach French. Other foreign languages, such as English, are not taught in school, but it is possible to organize voluntary English workshops with students
