Children of the Landfill

Internship and Volunteering Possible

This project aims to reintegrate the social, academic (formal and informal) and family influence on children and young people in difficult situations, like those living on the street or the municipal landfill of León and already working. Internships in psychology and social work are possible.

Project Details

The project is operated at two locations of the Asociación Niños del Fortin in León. A site, ("Las Chavaladas"), is near the bus station, another, ("Niños del Fortin"), in the vicinity of the church of La Recolección. The project aims to contribute to the social, educational and familial reintegration of children and adolescents who live and work in difficult conditions, on the streets or around municipal landfills of León. The children are often victims of domestic violence, abuse, exploitation and neglect, all related to the use of legal or illegal drugs.

The project is based on offering a comprehensive care plan, access to basic needs, education and two meals a day. The children join the project voluntarily, where they are supervised by psychologists and social workers.

During school time, children stop before or after class to learn and play, and to receive education. On the weekends, the children spend their whole day with the project. There are often more than 50 students in a class, so the teachers are understandably overwhelmed with controlling behaviour, homework, etc.

In extreme cases, the project provides the children with shelter, and the beds they have are always occupied. Some children have been living with the project for over 2 years now.

Besides the humanitarian aid, the project's goals are to establish, monitor and enforce children’s and young people’s rights and to raise society’s awareness of these problems.

Tasks for volunteers and interns:

* Supporting and helping out with the activities for the children and youth
* Teaching aid (homework, math problems, etc.)
* Conducting educational learning games
* If you have any specific skills or knowledge (e.g. dance, theatre etc.), you can carry out such activities with the children and youth

Internships in social work, psychology and related areas are possible.
