Informal Education for children who were rescued from child labour (Jaipur/India)

The remote internship is with a centre that temporarily (usually for a maximum of 3 months) accommodates children who have been freed from child labor by the State Youth Welfare Office. Often these children were found working in precarious conditions in the accessories industry of Jaipur. The children often are from other Indian states and the youth welfare office must try to locate their families and assess whether it is possible to repatriate the children there.

While at the facility, the children are not attending any formal school, but it is the aim of the NGO running the centre to make productive use of the time there, so that the children can learn something and have fun. You, as a remote intern, can contribute and communicate directly with the children online. You will discuss contents with the staff at the facility, but there is a big level of freedom left to you.

Suggested topics are for example:

  • You show and teach the children things from your country so that they an expand their view of the world and develop intercultural understanding
  • Handicrafts and art (with materials that are available on site free of charge if possible)
  • Sports (movement in front of the camera)
  • Life skills (e.g. hygiene, brushing teeth, social skills, empathy, social values)
  • Games, ideally with learning content

If you are interested, you can also get involved in social work tasks such as creating case reports.

To book or send an inquiry, simply fill the inquiry/order form and write "Informal Education India" in the comment box!

This placement is also available on site in Jaipur and will be presented in detail on our new website, which will go online in 2021.

Vitual Internship with WCS in Tanzania

WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society) is a US NGO, founded in 1895. The Tanzanian branch has been operating since 1956. Over 100 local and 6 international employees pursue various programs in Tanzania to protect Tanzania's unique biodiversity and natural heritage through research activities, community support, species protection activities and the implementation of global challenges at a local level.

A remote internship is possible with the NGO's headquarters based in Dar es Salaam. As a remote intern, you will have a biologist as your internship supervisor who will give you an insight into the work of the NGO and relevant issues of environmental protection in Tanzania. Discussing various case studies with your supervisor,  you will have a great learning outcome. You can also get involved in current project work and support the organization by writing reports and texts for its website and social media.

Current projects (2021) include research on beekeeping at various altitudes on Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru, examining how different species of bees adapt to high altitudes. Interns with relevant knowledge can contribute to the data analysis. A current community project is taking place in the Liwale Community Based Protected Area, for which a sustainable development plan has been developed. With 3600 square kilometers (1400 square miles) it is the second largest Community Based Protected Area in Tanzania, including a forest reserve with many African wild animals such as elephants, buffalo, impalas, zebras and lions.

Protection of pangolins in India

Pangolins are nocturnal and shy insectivorous mammals, leading a solitary life. Feeding on eggs, larvae and adults of ants and termites, they are acting as biological pest controlling agents. They use their long sticky tongue for feeding on these insects and are devoid of any teeth. There are two species of Pangolins living on the Indian sub-continent, the Chinese Pangolin and the Indian pangolin.

Presently, Pangolins are known as the most trafficked mammal in the illegal wildlife trade. They are secretly hunted for their scales and meat. The keratin scales are believed to have aphrodisiac properties in traditional Chinese medicine. However, scientific evidences identifying the bio-active constituents in scales are lacking. The meat is relished in many countries like Vietnam, China and Nepal. Chinese traders are paying relatively high amounts of money to villagers in Maharashtra to catch pangolins that will then be processed into traditional Chinese medicine.

Pangolins have been included in Endangered Category by International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and are listed under Appendix II of Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). In spite of having legislative protection, Pangolins are still secretly poached and illegally traded in India.

The NGO is doing awareness raising activities for the local population helping them to create alternative income instead of killing pangolins, e.g. doing beekeeping for honey, or extracting natural rubber from the Sterculia Urena tree. Remote interns can learn about the work of the NGO. They would write reports, prepare educational materials and can research about projects from other countries, which could could be implemented in India as sustainable alternative income generation for villagers.

To book or send an inquiry, simply fill the inquiry/order form and write "Pangolin Conservation" in the comment box!
