Reduction of plastic waste in Yangon

Volunteering

As a volunteer with the organisation Thant in Myanmar, you can support the organisation's efforts against the growing waste problem, contributing your time and skills in communications, marketing, waste management, graphic design, photography and sustainable tourism!

What is your placement organisation doing?

In Myanmar, waste management exists only to a small scale in urban centers. In rural areas, garbage is often not collected, but typically ends up in the environment. Myanmar's largest river, the Irrawaddy, washes 200 tons of plastic waste into the sea every day, making it one of the dirtiest rivers in the world. Although the reduction of plastic waste is the obvious answer to modern overconsumption, it often seems uncomfortable to consumers at first glance.

By tackling the root of the problem, Thant Myanmar is committed to reducing the use of disposable plastics by promoting sustainable, alternative materials that might not only look better than plastics, but might instead even be more practical and durable alternatives to plastic.

In its campaigning and environmental education work, Thant Myanmar starting point are alternatives to everyday plastic products such as plastic bags, plastic bottles and plastic straws. The goal is to make plastic products a less attractive choice and to raise awareness about the environmental problems associated with plastic waste.

Goal and activities include:

  • Raising awareness of shopkeepers and their customers to reduce the use of plastic bags
  • Introduction of drinking water dispensers in hotels, businesses and with tour operators to avoid plastic bottles
  • Raising awareness of restaurant staff to get rid of plastic straws
  • Training hotels, businesses and NGOs on how to reduce their plastic consumption and support alternative materials
  • Support of village communities in waste management and waste prevention

Thant Myanmar's work has been successful: So far, through events, posters, mass media and social media campaigns, more than 5,000 organizations, businesses, restaurants, hotels and countless individuals have been mobilized to reduce their plastic waste and introduce a more sustainable waste management in Myanmar.

How can you get involved?

As a volunteer, you can support the organisation in various ways, including communications and marketing, graphic design, photography and film, event and campaign management, waste prevention, waste management and sustainable tourism.

We are looking for volunteers with a professional background (students or graduates or having practical work experience) in the areas mentioned above, but also committed individuals without any specialist experience.

  • Communication & Marketing (duration 3-12 months): experience required
  • Graphic design (duration 3-6 months): experience required
  • Event and Campaign Management (Duration: 6-12 months): previous experience preferred but not essential
  • Waste management (duration 3-12 months): experience required
  • Photography and film (duration 3-12 months): previous experience preferred, but not essential
  • Sustainable tourism (duration 6-12 months): experience required
  • Waste management (duration 3-12 months): experience required
  • Waste prevention (duration of use at least 3 months): Pedagogical background with professional experience of advantage; Development of educational materials on waste prevention.

Your Impact: This is your contribution

Thant Myanmar's team consists of volunteers working together to avoid plastic waste. With your commitment, you are making an important contribution to raising awareness about the problem of waste, helping the local team to work towards a sustainable, clean and garbage-free Myanmar!

Please bring your own laptop.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Are there fixed start dates for the project, which I must adhere to?
No, you can arrive at any date and you can hence, plan your trip according to your availability and the prices of flights. We can pick you up from the airport even at night.
Can I stay longer at my accommodation after my volunteering/internship or arrive earlier?
Yes, this is possible and we will give you our best rates. Just let us know when you arrive and leave and we will let you know the costs.
During my stay, can I travel around the country?
Of course you can travel around during your time in Myanmar and get to know this fascinating country. If you want to travel during your time of volunteering/internship, you should ask at your placement whether your absence is ok. Probably it is better if you plan some time to travel AFTER your volunteer/internship assignment.
Is it safe to travel to Myanmar alone as a single female traveller?
As most Buddhist countries, Myanmar is considered a safe travel destination for women. Approximately 80% of our participants are female and between 18-25 years old. Not a single instance of a serious security breach has occurred. Our coordinator will advise you on how you should conduct yourself in order to avoid problems - your dressing style, valuables, and in dealing with local men. Our preparation materials elaborate on this matter. If you follow these basic rules that apply equally to many other places, the risk in Myanmar is minimal.
Will I be the only volunteer/intern in the project or in Yangon?
The total number of participants that participate simultaneously with an organization depends on the size and activity of the organization and responsibilities of volunteers/interns. We try to avoid too many volunteers/interns in an organization at the same time. It may be that you are alone in your work site, but usually there are, throughout the year, other participants in Myanmar, who you can meet in your spare time, if you desire so.
What vaccinations do I need?
We recommend that you ask your physician or an Institute of Tropical Medicine for recommendations. Our preparation materials also include a chapter about vaccinations and health.
Where do I live?
In Myanmar and in Yangon we cooperate with several hostels, guest houses and Bed&Breakfasts, and we have a suitable option for any preferences and standard. You will share the accommodation with other travelers from around the world or other participants of our programs.

We also consider the distance to your volunteer/internship assignment.

In Yangon, accommodation is typically in the city centre, e.g. China Town or near Sule Pagoda.

As a non-resident, it is not legal in Myanmar to live in private accommodation or with host families.
Can I choose my accommodation?
You can tell your room preference (e.g. single, double, dorm room) and we will suggest you the available options.
Does my accommodation have internet facilities?
Yes, the hostels usually have Wifi internet. You can also access the internet with your smartphone. We will give you a local SIM card with some initial credit, which you can top up as needed. You can easily activate a data package (around 10 USD for 6 GB).
How can I do my laundry?
You can either do your laundry by hand, or ask for laundry service at your accommodation.
I am a vegetarian. Can I get vegetarian food?
Many restaurants in Myanmar at least have one vegetarian dish. At the supermarkets there are many vegetarian food ingredients.
What language skills do I need?
English language skills are widely spread in most parts of the country. Anyway, people are happy if you try at least to speak some words in their local language.

Hotel or tourism internship in Myanmar

icon pd

Tourism in a larger scale has only recently started in Myanmar, but is strongly growing. You can get to know tourism in Myanmar and gain valuable practical experience through a hotel or tour operator internship in Myanmar.

This placement is possible as a Remote / Virtual internship from home! Tasks for Remote Interns: Creating contents for blog, website, facebook and email marketing in English for tour operator. The remote internship is 450 EUR for the first month and 100 EUR additionally for any additional month or part thereof. Just submit the inquiry/order form form and mention "Remote Internship"!

A new country on the tourist map

Only since the dissolution of the former military junta in 2011, international tourists have been visiting Myanmar in considerable numbers - and with a tremendous growth. The development of tourism in the country is progressing strongly, as the country boasts great tourism potential: Breath-taking landscapes, countless cultural and historical attractions, and friendly people. Through a hotel or tour operator internship in Myanmar you will not only get to know this fascinating country first-hand, but you will also gain valuable experience in the fields of hospitality and tourism.

Tour operators are typically organizing tours through the whole country, which usually include sightseeing of historic pagodas, temples, monasteries, fortresses and cities, and landscapes such as the Ayeyarwady River on which ship cruises are arranged, or Lake Inle, which is known for the stilted settlements of the Intha people, featuring the characteristic fishermen and floating markets. Hot air ballooning over landscapes and historic sites is very popular in Myanmar, too. Beach tourism is of increasing popularity.

We can organise internships at various hotels of different sizes and standards throughout Myanmar, and also internships with tour operators.

Great extra benefit:

Some hotels even provide interns with free accommodation and/or boarding. This is especially likely when you do your internship in rural Myanmar.

How it works:

Simply email us your CV/resume including a recent application picture, and tell us whether you prefer a hotel or tour operator internship. We will then suggest you a possible hotel or tour operator within a few days and will give you details about the location, your tasks, working hours, etc.

Your role as an intern:

At smaller hotels interns will generally train in all departments, for example Front Office and Front Desk with bookings, inquiries, check-in, customer service and guest relations; Housekeeping (ensuring quality standards); Food and Beverage (restaurants/bars, stock keeping/inventory/shopping), etc.

At larger hotels work tends to be separated by department, so the tasks for trainees will also be more department-specific.

Interns can work in several departments and discuss their preferences on beforehand with the hotel, and you will usually be assigned to departments where you will have customer contact and use your foreign language skills.

With a tour operator, you will design tailor-made travel itineraries, you will communicate with inquiries and clients in foreign languages, you will write texts about tourism activities in Myanmar in foreign languages for the tour operator's website and social media, and you will support the tour operator with various administrative and logistic tasks at the office and with direct customer contact.

Ideally, you already have basic experience in either hospitality, services, customer care or tourism (e.g. you are currently a student/trainee of a relevant career, or you already have relevant practical experience through an internship, job etc.), however this is not mandatory if you are motivated and interested in hospitality and/or tourism in Myanmar.

For hotel internships, we recommend the months of October to March, which are the peak season. During this period you can get the know the tourism sector when its bustling and gain a lot of great experiences!

World Unite! in Myanmar

Myanmar is located in Southeast Asia, neighbouring Thailand, Laos, China, India and Bangladesh. It also has a coastline of almost 2000 km (1200 miles) along the Indian Ocean with tropical paradise beaches.

Many travelers are experiencing Myanmar (also "Burma") as pristine as no other country in tropical Asia. The buddhist country, which is rich in temples, fortresses and pagodas from the times of kingdoms and dynasties, did remain relatively closed to foreign travelers until 2011, because the former British colony was under the rule of socialist and totalitarian regimes from 1962 to 2010.

Only in recent years, Myanmar has opened up step by step for international tourism and differently than many of its neighbouring countries, therefore still offers countless possibilities for discoveries off the beaten tourist path. Be it Bagan, the historical town of temples, the monumental Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon, or magic Lake Inle: Myanmar is a fascinating travel destination full of breathtaking sights and landscapes for you to discover!

Our main location in Myanmar is the former capital of Yangon (also: Rangun), which is the country's urban and cultural centre. However, we also arrange internships and volunteering options in other cities of the country, and in rural areas.

The international airport of Yangon (RGN) is relatively easily to reach, usually including at least one stopover. Within Myanmar there are relatively inexpensive domestic travel options including flights and buses, making it easy to reach all domestic locations.

Myanmar is considered a safe travel destination. Also as a single female traveler there is no particular risk if you follow certain basic rules. The country's language is Burmese, which is the native language of around 3/4 of all Burmese citizens, but furthermore there are numerous other languages of the 135 ethnical groups of Myanmar. In tourist areas and at your placements, you can typically communicate in English.

Even though Myanmar is rich in natural ressources, it is one of Southeast asia's poorest countries. Around one third of the population live below the poverty line, with many having an income of less than 2 USD per day. Further problems of the country are the lack of access to education and healthcare, corruption, and ethnic conflicts. Poverty is particularly prevailing in the border regions, in the central dry area, and in the settlement areas of the country's ethnic minorities.

Our locations in Myanmar

Yangon

Our main location in Myanmar is Yangon (Rangun), the country's former capital. With more than 7 million inhabitants, it is not only Myanmar's biggest city, but also its urban, economic and cultural centre.

With its unique and largely intact colonial city centre, Yangon is regarded as the city with the highest density of colonial buildings in the whole of Southeast Asia.

The city centre of Yangon is located around the golden Sule Pagode, which is more than 2000 years old. The city is also home to Myanmar's most important Buddhist site, the golden Shwedagon pagoda.

Compared to other Southeast Asian cities, Yangon however lacks behind in terms of infrastructure. Particularly the outskirts of the city, and wide parts of the rural areas of Myanmar are still very poor and are lacking infrastructure.

Rural area

In rural areas, however still easily reachable from Yangon, we currently have two placement options: Farmwork near Mwabi and the Bhuddist Thabarwa Centre, which provides free simple accommodation.

Social Work, Nursing and Medicine at Buddhist centre

v icon

The Thabarwa Center is a Buddhist institution, providing home, nutrition, nursing and medical care for around 2500 people in need. You will live with and meditate with the monks and nuns, and you support the centre with social work related activities. Volunteers with experience in nursing, medicine and therapies are particularly needed. You can also get involved in communications and teaching English.

What is your placement organization doing?

A large part of the population of Myanmar don't have access to any social security system that would help them out in difficult situations. For this reason, particularly old, sick, physically or mentally disabled, unemployed and destitute people are under the threat of a life in poverty, marginalised by society. The Thabarwa Center offers these people accommodation, nutrition, and nursing and medical care.

The Thabarwa Center was initially founded as a place for meditation. Nowadays, Thabarwa Center attracts visitors and volunteers from all over the world who come to meditate and to do volunteer work. The centre provides shelter to around 2,500 people with physical and mental impariments or health problems, as well as people who are for various reasons unable to provide for their own survival (orphans, homeless people, etc.). They receive free basic medical and nursing care, accommodation and meals.

The center is run by Buddhist monks and nuns who also live on the grounds. Many activities in the center depend on the help and commitment of volunteers.

How can you get involved?

Do you like working in a team in an international environment? Great! At the Thabarwa Nature Center you can look forward to working with numerous volunteers from all over the world!

Your day usually begins with accompanying the monks and nuns to the village on their alms round. You will help them collecting donations for the people supported by the center. According to Buddhist principles the monks and nuns are traditionally barefooted (but this is not a must for you).

Afterwards you will take care of the people who live in the center. Many of them are frail or have physical limitations, and are looking forward to an outing with you using a wheelchair.

You can also help clean the rooms, the common areas, the water tank or kitchen or help to wash rice. Volunteers also assist in the care of patients (washing, dressing, feeding, making beds, tidying rooms).
Volunteers can also help with garbage collection in and around the center. Volunteers before you have started a composting and gardening project which you can continue.

The center is especially pleased with volunteers who have experience in medicine, nursing or therapies (e.g. physiotherapy, occupational therapy)

Volunteers can also support English classes for monks and nuns of different language levels (beginner to advanced).

If you have experience with photography, video or sound editing, you can support the center with the creation of audio translations, social media, website updates, etc.

Are you ready to immerse into the life of a community and support it wherever help is most needed? Then this is the right place for you!

You will notice that there are numerous ways to get involved. It is important that you actively participate in activities that you would like to support.

A great extra: Volunteers can participate in daily meditation sessions free of charge!

Important: During your time as a volunteer you will live as part of a Buddhist community that allows you to immerse deeply in the local culture and religion. In order to maintain a harmonious and respectful relationship, there are some rules to be observed. These rules include the complete abstinence from alcohol, cigarettes and narcotics during your entire time of volunteering – both at the center and outside of it. We can provide you with more information on this topic.

Getting to Yangon

Karte Myanmar

You will book your flight to Yangon Airport (also: Rangoon; RGN). Please remember to share your flight details with us so we can pick you up at the airport and bring you to your accommodation in Yangon.

Even if your workplace is not in Yangon, you will spend your first few days there to acclimatize (we will organize a good accommodation for you in Yangon). In Yangon you will participate in an introduction and orientation program by your local coordinator and get to know the other participants of our program. After that you will travel by bus or airplane to your actual workplace. Buses go from Yangon to almost all corners of the country and cost around 20 USD per route (e.g. to Mandalay, a ride of 10-12 hours), domestic flights are around 50-90 USD per route and only take around 1-2 hours.
