Counselling of street children and orphans

This responsible task is targeted at students, graduates and professionals of social sciences, social work, psychology, possibly in combination with development work/Africa sciences etc.

The task consists in understanding the problems of street children and orphans and assisting the children and teenagers in their personal development and life planning. International volunteers will be working together with experienced local social workers who are part of the communities. This includes outreach work where street children and families are mentored with the goal of integrating street children back into society giving them a perspective for their future. A successful example are the "Family Strenghtening Programs" of SOS Children's villages, carried out in Arusha, Dar-es-Salaam and Zanzibar.

It is necessary to have basic Swahili skills in order to perform this task. Volunteers should learn some Swahili before they come to Tanzania (for instance my means of books) and while in the country take part in a language course.

Volunteers can be in Moshi with Yesu Anaweza, Msamaria, Kilicentre or WODEF and in Zanzibar, Dar-es-Salaam and Arusha with SOS Children's Villages
