Sea turtle sanctuary Nungwi

All species of sea turtles are endangered. The main threats include pollution,  human pressure into the natural habitats of the turtles and poaching.

In June 2001, Tanzania founded the "National Turtle Conservation Committee" (TTCC) under which the "Mnarani Marine Turtles Conservation Aquarium" in Nungwi, at the northernmost tip of Zanzibar, is operating as a sanctuary where in a large natural lagoon and in several smaller pools sea turtles are being raised. Those turtles have either been found with injuries or they have hatched from eggs which have been collected on beaches where due to human pressure their survival is at risk. The eggs are being incubated inside the protected area of the sanctuary, the young turtles are being hatched and then released to the open sea once they reach a certain size.

The Mnarani Marine Turtles Aquarium can be visited in Nungwi by tourists and the revenue through admissions is being used to fund the conservation program.

As a short-time volunteer your task will be to clean the sea turtle lagoon and pools, to prepare food and feed the young turtles and doing guided tours for visitors (also in foreign languages if possible). Accommodation will be in a guest house which belongs to the sea turtle sanctuary, located at one of the most beautiful beaches of Zanzibar.

The price includes: Full-board accommodation  (breakfast, lunch, dinner) in a guest house at the beach of Nungwi, return transfer from Zanzibar Town, Zanzibar airport or sea port to Nungwi, donation (50 USD) to the project, Info-PDF.

Uzi Island Kindergarten and sea turtle project

Uzi Island is an island in the south of Zanzibar. During low tide it is possible to reach the island overland; there is an approximately 1 km long connecting road between Zanzibar and Uzi which during low tide is also served by Daladalas, the public transport of Zanzibar and Zanzibar Town is reachable within one hour. The island therefore is not really remote, but still has its own island character.

The private kindergarten is located in the middle of the village of Uzi which has around 2000 inhabitants. The villagers of Uzi are friendly and open-minded towards visitors. Everyone will like to know from your where you are from and wants you to tell things about your country.

Most of the villagers are farmers or fishermen. In the village there are a couple of small groceries. There is electricity and a water pipe bringing fresh water from Zanzibar mainland. The living standard in Uzi is the same as in any other village of Zanzibar. In Uzi there are no tourist hotels, but there are regular cultural tourism visitor groups that explore the village and the island. The islanders are positive about this kind of tourism. Uzi is a safe island. People know each other and they don't lock the front doors of their houses.

Every day around 100 children aged 3-5 from Uzi are attending the kindergarten and you can play with the children and teach them reading, writing and simple maths. You will basically be part of the village community and the children will also look for you at your accommodation which is located only at  2 minutes walking distance from the kindergarten, at the house of Isaac, where all foreigners stay when visiting Uzi.

You can also participate in our sea turtle project, or just volunteer at the sea turtle project without the kindergarten. The project is presented here.

To get a better idea about Uzi, you can also read Katie's report (PDF). Katie from the US has spent one month in Uzi teaching English. There is another report (PDF) written by Nicola from Vienna about staying in Uzi, and a slide show animation done by Celine.

Price includes: Accommodation on full board (breakfast, lunch, dinner) in a private house on Uzi island, return transfers from Zanzibar town, airport or seaport to Uzi, donation (50 USD) to the kindergarten and Info-PDF.

St. Monica Kindergarten and primary school

The Anglican church in the city centre of Zanzibar Town is running the "St. Monica" kindergarten which has three groups, the total number of children is around 70. Even though the kindergarten is run by the church, religious education plays a minor part only as also many muslim children are attending it. Classes are Monday to Friday from 8-12. There is also a primary school. If you are interested you can stay for 2 hours longer everyday and participate in organizational work of the kindergarten and primary school.

Price includes: Accommodation WITHOUT  meals at a private house in Zanzibar town, return transfers from Zanzibar airport or seaport to your accommodation and transfer to Bububu on your first day of volunteering, donation (50 USD) to the kindergarten/school, Info-PDF.

Tropical farm

The farm in the interior of Zanzibar grows tropical fruits, particularly different species of mangoes, guava, citrus fruits and bananas, furthermore vegetables such as cucumbers and avocados. The population of over 3000 fructiferous mango trees is remarkable. The farms primarily produces for local markets. Solely exquisite species of mangoes such as Muyuni and Mwarugo are exported to the gulf region. Like all traditional farms in Zanzibar this farms is characterised by the large variety of species grown. An extensive mixed cultivation is adopted, in which such species of plants are cultivated close to each other, in which the presence of one species reduces the appearance of possible pests on other species. Synthetic pesticides are replaced for instance by using the oil from the seed of the neem tree. With some species of fruits and vegetables, shifting cultivation is practised to maintain the quality of the soil. There are also up to 40,000 broilers and laying hens kept in barns in which they can walk around freely; also a nursery for chicks exists.

You will work together with the local farm workers and you can learn about tropical farming.

There is accommodation for you on the farm.

Price includest: Accommodation on full board (breakfast, lunch, dinner) on the farm, return transfers from Zanzibar town, airport or seaport, donatation (50 USD) to the farm, Info-PDF.

Public hospitals

These options are even available for participants with little or no previous experience.
