Kindergarten and pre-schools in Tangier
The AL WAFAE kindergarten is run by the charitable development organisation AL WAFAE in the Bir Chifae quarter of Tangier. Every day, around 55 children from underprivileged families are coming to the centre: the session for the 5 year olds (2nd year of kindergarten) is from 9-12 a.m., the season for 4 years olds (1st year of kindergarten) is in the afternoon from 2-5 p.m..
Volunteers can assist the local volunteer women who run the kindergarten at both sessions or just choose one of them. Activities carried out involve all activities typical to kindergartens. Knowledge of French language is of advantage.
If you are interested, you can also assist with the further activities which are being carried out by AL WAFAE at the centre such as language courses, cooking lessons and sewing classes.
The situation of pre-school education in Morocco is as follows: There are plans to introduce public pre-schools for children aged 3-6, however this plan will still take time to be implemented. For this reason, the Moroccan government agency ADS (Agence de Développement Social) is supporting organizations that provide pre-school education with equipment, teaching materials and rooms at the premises of various public primary schools for pre-school education.
The organisation "Conseils" is making use of this help to provide pre-school education to children aged 3-6 years at the premisis of various public primary schools in the city of Tangier and in the rural district. The office of Conseils is located at a primary school in the Dradeb area of Tangier.
Volunteers can assist Conseils as follows:
• They can teach the teachers in didactics to improve their teaching methods
• They can teach teachers in foreign language and educational science
• They can teach children in reading, writing, and French, play with them, do sports, do creative activities such as theatre, painting, music, percussion.
• Lanugage teachers can also give language classes to adults who cannot afford paying a language school, particularly in French, English and Spanish, from beginner to advanced level, depending on the volunteer's skills
Volunteers can either be just at one location or rotate through various schools. The volunteer should have suitable experiences/skills. Further it is of advantage, to elaborate a plan who to get involved prior to arriving in Morocco. The minimum time to volunteer with Conseils is 2 weeks.
