Accommodation in Morocco
In Tangier, we can make use of two appartments which are shared by our participants. The apartments are located in modern buildings in the city centre of Tangier. All popular sites of the city, the medina, the kasbah, shops, restaurants and the locations of many volunteering/internship organizations are easily reachable by foot or using inexpensive small taxis.
The buildings are located in areas of upper income levels. We have choosen these locations, as they are the only parts of Tangier where even at night it is relatively safe to be on the streets, and also as the people staying in these areas are the only ones understanding the concept of "shared apartments", where several young people, even of mixed gender, are staying together in one apartment. In other, more traditional and conservative areas of the city, we would face serious problems with the neighbours, if unmarried young people share one apartment.
Each of the two apartment has 4 rooms; some rooms have two beds if you want to share. Kitchen, bathroom and living room have to be shared. The apartments are of high construction quality, have modern bathrooms, and funcional furniture. Both apartments have wireless internet.
On the campsite "Miramonte" we can further access bungalows at very attractive rates. Every bungalow has two bedrooms with twin beds, living room, kitchen and bathroom. The campsite has a restaurant, a swiming pool (from May to September), tennis and karaoke, and is located on a slope between the city and the beach.
For the months of July and August, the bungalows are fully booked a long time in advance. The campsite is definitely not a "ghetto" for European tourists, but many guests are Moroccan families.
Unfortunately, we cannot offer family accommodation in Tangier. The reason is that the only families who understand the concept of hosting non-muslim foreigners are belonging to Morocco's upper class in terms of education and income and therefore don't have the financial need to host foreigners. The conservative muslim middle class however is generally rather sceptical about the influence of Western foreigners to their own children and therefore rejects the idea. Due to the large families and limited space, they also typically don't have any spare rooms for guests.
In Chefchaouen we have managed to achieve very special conditions with several hotels in the historical Old town. This has the advantage that you can get high quality accommodation at very good rates. Some of these accommodation even have kitchens that you can use, such as the Hotel Koutoubia.
