Description

Working Holiday in Japan

Is it your dream to live in Japan for a year, immerse yourself in the culture, and fund your stay through employment? With around 2,000 participants per year, we are by far the largest and most established Working Holiday support provider in Japan. Our experienced staff at our support offices in Tokyo and Kyoto will take care of all formalities with you, help you find a job, and assist you with anything else you may need. You can book affordable and convenient accommodation at our sharehouses in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Okinawa, while meeting like-minded travelers.

Participation in the Working Holiday program is possible even if you don’t speak Japanese yet. There are jobs available that require little to no Japanese. We also offer beginner-friendly conversation courses in Tokyo, starting monthly and tailored specifically to the needs of Work & Travelers. Additionally, in Tokyo and Kyoto, you can join our social meetup events, cultural workshops, and Japanese-English language exchange programs, where you will meet young Japanese people.

The Working Holiday Base Package

You can choose whether to start your Japan adventure in Tokyo or Kyoto. Arrivals in Tokyo are possible every Friday throughout the year, while arrivals in Kyoto take place on the first Friday of each month.

The services included in the Working Holiday Base Package are available at both locations. We assist you with travel preparation (including visa application support), all formalities (such as resident registration, tax number, Japanese health insurance, bank account, phone contract, etc.), and job searching on-site. Support in Japan is available for a full year and includes additional benefits such as participation in our social meetup events, language exchange, luggage storage, mail forwarding, and more.

You can find all the details by expanding the following sliders:

1. Travel Preparation

  • Before your trip, our experienced team will answer all your questions and support you in planning your year in Japan.

  • We also provide a comprehensive mobile-friendly online "Working Holiday Japan Knowledge Base," where you’ll find explainer videos and texts, providing answers to all common questions. This is not only useful for travel preparation but also serves as a reference guide while in Japan. To make things even easier, we have integrated an AI chatbot trained with our content (and continuously improving!).

  • The Knowledge Base includes five short explanation videos that walk you step by step through the visa application process. You can send us your visa application documents, and we will check them before you submit them to the embassy or consulate. Guarantee: If we have approved your documents as suitable and your visa is still rejected (which has never happened!), we will fully refund you!

  • The Knowledge Base also includes intercultural preparation, which is essential for better understanding the mindset of many people in Japan in professional and everyday life.

  • Before your trip, you will be invited to a Zoom session that will walk you through all necessary steps and answer any remaining questions. You’ll also get the chance to link up with other program participants!

  • Once a month, we host an online Japanese-English language exchange, allowing you to communicate with young Japanese people—30 minutes in English and 30 minutes in Japanese. You can join this exchange even before your arrival in Japan.

2. Formalities & On-Site Introduction

  • Pickup from the airport (Haneda/Narita for program start in Tokyo; Kansai/Itami for program start in Kyoto) via public transportation and accompany you to your sharehouse accommodation (World Unite! Sharehouses only; on program start dates only).

  • We accompany you to the city hall to register you as a resident where we also apply for your tax number and register you for Japanese health insurance (mandatory).

  • We apply for your exemption from the Japanese pension system.

  • We accompany you to a bank to open an account.

  • We assist you with signing a mobile phone contract. We stock Japanese SIM cards at our offices.

  • If you receive official letters from Japanese authorities, we will inform you of what to do. We will also notify you of any official deadlines to consider (e.g., income tax declaration).

3. Job Search

  • We assist you in creating your résumé and application documents in both Japanese and English.

  • Once a week, we hold a Job Counseling Session in our office, lasting 90–120 minutes, that teaches you everything you need to know about working in Japan. It includes a mock Japanese job interview.

  • We provide an informative session about how to use AI to write your CV/resume, practice job interviews, and practice Japanese language skills.

  • If you have basic Japanese skills, we arrange an appointment at the public job center and accompany you there. The job center has a high job placement success rate.

  • If you do not yet have basic Japanese skills, we provide one-on-one job counseling in our office.

  • We share available job offers in the participant group on LINE.

  • You can use PCs and printers in our Tokyo and Kyoto offices for job searches and application preparation.

4. One Year of Access to Our Support Team!

Throughout your entire year in Japan, you can rely on support from our multilingual and Japan-experienced international team. Our offices in central Tokyo and southern Kyoto are open Monday to Friday during the day.

If you are elsewhere in Japan, you can contact us via phone, WhatsApp, LINE, email, or chat. Questions about jobs? Travel? How things work in Japan? Language barriers? Our team is here to help!

If you are of a nationality that can stay for more than one year, or that can return to Japan for a second Working Holiday, you can extend our support for the extra time at a small additional fee.

5. Additional Services

  • Luggage storage in Tokyo and Kyoto at no additional cost (e.g. if you want to travel around without carrying all your belongings).

  • Forwarding of letters and packages within Japan (if you are registered in our sharehouses).

  • Participation in social meetup events/workshops, either free of charge or at low cost (depending on the event/workshop).

  • Participation in Japanese-English language exchanges, both in-person; and online once per month (even before your arrival).

  • To offset the CO₂ emissions of your long-haul flights, we plant 10 native trees per participant at Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania!

6. Support with Booking Language Lessons

Learning some Japanese is not mandatory but recommended. The following options are available (additional costs apply):

  • World Unite! Conversation Course for Beginners – This course starts monthly, runs Monday–Friday (4×45 minutes per day), and can be booked for any duration from 1–8 weeks.

Cost: 16,000 JPY per week (plus a one-time fee of 10,000 JPY for study materials).

  • External language schools in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Nagano offer intensive group courses for all levels (beginner to upper advanced). We provide all options and prices, and you can book them directly through us.

  • Online private lessons, which you can book through us.

  • Online learning community – our program participants receive a discount.

  • Free of charge: Japanese-English language exchanges, both in-person; and online once per month (even before your arrival).

  • Community centers in all cities, where retired volunteers and housewives offer low-cost Japanese lessons once or twice per week.

7. Support with Accommodation Booking

In popular locations, rental prices in Japan are among the highest in the world. We operate two sharehouses in Tokyo, one in Kyoto, and one in Okinawa, offering affordable accommodation to our Working Holiday participants. You can book an initial time online through this website, and also extend while in Japan.

For private rooms, we offer discounted rates at partner share houses operated by Oakhouse, Be Good Japan, and Share180, which also provide apartments.

We can also arrange homestays for you.

You are not required to stay in our arranged accommodations—you can choose your own. However, if you stay in another city or a different district in Tokyo or Kyoto, we cannot accompany you to the city hall, bank, etc. In that case, we will provide detailed instructions on what to do and where to go.

8. Returnee Package

The following nationalities can undertake two non-consecutive Work & Travel stays of one year each in Japan:

  • Ireland

  • New Zealand

  • Germany

  • Austria

  • Denmark

  • Slovakia

The following nationalities can either stay for two consecutive years or undertake two non-consecutive Work & Travel stays of one year each in Japan:

Pre-arranged, Guaranteed Jobs

The following pre-arranged, guaranteed jobs can be booked as extras:

Farm Work

Work with full pay and live on a Japanese farm as part of your Working Holiday experience in Japan! No prior agricultural knowledge is required.

You can specify preferences regarding:

  • Region

  • Duration (1-12 weeks)

  • Start time (can be at any time during your Working Holiday stay in Japan, provided you meet the minimum Japanese language requirements)

  • Animal husbandry or only crop cultivation

We collaborate with many farms across Japan. You can share your preferences with us, and we will try to find a suitable farm for you. However, it is important to remain flexible, as not all preferences can always be fulfilled.

Farm work jobs are paid between 690-1500 JPY per hour. Generally, you are expected to work 48 hours per week (6 days x 8 hours). Part-time farm work is not possible. Actual working hours may vary depending on the season, e.g., sowing and harvest seasons often require more hours, or weather conditions, which may result in fewer hours.

Farms provide accommodation and meals, with costs deducted from your salary—but at a much lower rate than what you earn, so you will still have money left over! Accommodation and meal arrangements vary from farm to farm, and we will inform you about the specific details.

Since Japanese farmers rarely speak English, you will need basic Japanese conversational skills to carry out the job. If you already possess these skills, we can arrange the farm job before your arrival to Japan. If you do not have sufficient Japanese skills yet, a 4-week conversation course in Tokyo is enough to reach the required level. Once completed, we can arrange your farm job, and you can start about a week later (or at any later point, if you prefer).

We arrange up to three online interviews, for which we will prepare you. A staff member will additionally support you during these interviews. Almost all participants receive a job offer after the first interview. If you are not hired after an interview, the process will continue until you reach the maximum of three interviews. If, after completing all three interviews, no job placement has been secured, you will receive a refund of the fees for the pre-arranged job extra, provided you followed our preparation advice and the reason for not being hired is clearly on the employer’s side.

If you book farm work as an extra, we will organize ONE guaranteed job placement on a farm for you. (If you would like two different farm placements, please book the quantity "2" of the extra "Pre-arranged, guaranteed job.")

Likewise, if you want two or more jobs from different categories (e.g., a farm job and a hospitality job), please book the quantity "2", or the desired number of the extra "Pre-arranged, guaranteed job."

Hospitality Jobs

This category includes job placements in ryokans (traditional Japanese inns, often with onsen), hotels, ski resorts, beach resorts, and the food service industry. Possible roles include:

Hotel & Restaurant Jobs: Reception/front desk, waiter/waitress, kitchen assistant, luggage handler, dishwasher, room service, housekeeping, laundry staff, onsen cleaner/attendant

Sports Instructor: In winter—snowboarding and skiing (including skiing instructor for children). Solid snowboarding/skiing experience is required, but instructor experience is not necessary. In summer—tennis, archery, mountain biking, yoga, and Pilates. You should have relevant experience as an instructor in your chosen area.

You can indicate preferences regarding:

  • Position

  • Type of service (ryokan, hotel, ski resort…)

  • Region

  • Duration (minimum 3 months)

  • Start date (within your Working Holiday in Japan)

Since not all job options are always available, we expect a degree of flexibility regarding the specific job. The job placement process typically takes 2 to 4 weeks.

Ski resort jobs in Hokkaido, Iwate, or Niigata start in late November/early December and last until late March, with summer positions running from April/May to October. You should commit to an entire season. For all other hospitality jobs, start dates are available year-round.

There is a limited number of English-speaking jobs available for the winter season at ski resorts. For all other hospitality jobs, basic Japanese skills are required. As a beginner, you should join our conversation course in Tokyo for 8 weeks.

Accommodation costs apply but are subsidized by the employer. We will provide the details. For example, one resort offers shared twin room accommodation for 5,000 JPY per month, while another provides a dormitory bed for free but allows upgrading to a private room for 15,000 JPY per month. Additional benefits such as subsidized meals and free ski passes are often offered.

The standard weekly working hours are 40 hours per week. The pay is usually within the legal minimum wage range of the respective prefecture (typically 800-1200 JPY per hour).

Please note that working conditions in Japan’s hospitality industry can be challenging.

We arrange up to three online interviews, with preparation and support from a staff member. Most participants secure a job after the first interview. If you are not hired after an interview, the process will continue until the maximum of three interviews is reached. If, after all three interviews, no job placement has been secured, you will receive a refund of the fees for the pre-arranged job extra, provided you followed our preparation advice and the reason for not being hired is clearly on the employer’s side.

If you book hospitality jobs as an extra, we will organize ONE guaranteed hospitality job for you. (If you would like placement in two different hospitality jobs, please book the quantity "2" of the extra "Pre-arranged, guaranteed job.")

Similarly, if you want two or more jobs from different categories (e.g., a farm job and a hospitality job), please book the quantity "2" or the desired number of the extra "Pre-arranged, guaranteed job."

Babysitting Jobs

Families in Japan want you as an English-speaking babysitter/nanny so their kids can learn English naturally. No Japanese skills are required, and you do not need to be a native English speaker.

After booking, you create a profile of yourself. Families looking for an English-speaking babysitter/nanny can then book you by the hour. We do not guarantee a set number of hours for this job—your workload depends on how "popular" you are. It could be any amount of weekly hours from just a few hours to a full-time job. You may also be booked by multiple families. Generally, female babysitters/nannies are more in demand than male ones. If you do not receive any bookings at all, we will refund the fee for the babysitter job extra.

We have families in many regions of Japan, and you can move between different cities during your Working Holiday. You only need to book the babysitter job extra once.

The pay is at or above the legal minimum wage in each prefecture.

Since babysitting may not be a full-time position, it might be a good idea to combine it with another part-time job (that we can help you to find on-site as part of the services of the Working Holiday Base Package).

The babysitting job only needs to be booked once and can be used for your entire stay in Japan. If you want two or more jobs from different categories (e.g., a babysitting job and a farm job), please book the quantity "2" or the desired number of the extra "Pre-arranged, guaranteed job."

Accommodation Options

Tokyo

Sharehouses in the Tokyo Metropolitan Area

Shiohama Sharehouse, Tokyo

Exclusively for World Unite! participants, we operate our own sharehouse accommodation in Tokyo, located near the Kiba subway station. Spread over three floors, the sharehouse features nine dormitory rooms of various sizes, each accommodating 4-8 people, as well as five double rooms. We try to separate the rooms by gender; however, this is not always possible and cannot be guaranteed. There are two common areas with fully equipped kitchens, six showers, four toilets, and two bathrooms. We provide Wi-Fi on all floors at no extra cost. Modern air conditioning units ensure cooling and heating in all rooms. Additionally, for house residents, the City Hub premises of around 100 sqm on the ground floor are available as a communal area from the afternoon onwards, where you can use a foosball table, a big screen, and a music keyboard at no extra cost. The 140 sqm rooftop terrace, with an unobstructed view of Tokyo Skytree, features a covered seating area, hammocks, and greenery. House residents can also use a coin-operated washing machine, a dryer, and a free luggage storage room. Need a bicycle? You can rent one from us at affordable prices.

Warabi Sharehouse, Saitama

The Warabi sharehouse is situated in Saitama prefecture, within the Tokyo metropolitan area, and conveniently just a 15-minute walk from Warabi train station. This sharehouse offers 36 rooms, available for single, double, and 4-share occupancy, each equipped with air conditioning for cooling and heating, as well as a balcony. In the case of accommodation in twin or dorm rooms, we try to separate by gender; however, this is not always possible and cannot be guaranteed.

You'll find a common lounging area with a TV and comfortable sofa, along with a fully equipped communal kitchen for your convenience. Each floor is equipped with toilets and sinks. A shower area separated for males and females with 6 shower booths is available on the ground floor. Wifi is accessible throughout the building, and the sharehouse also offers bicycle parking, 4 coin-operated washing machines, 2 coin-operated dryers, and a small ornamental Japanese garden. For added convenience, a supermarket, several convenience stores, and shopping malls are just a few minutes' walk away. Renting a bike is also possible at a reasonable price.

Our dedicated team members visit the Warabi Sharehouse at least three times a week to provide comprehensive support to our program participants.

Urayasu Sharehouse, Chiba

The Urayasu Sharehouse (available from August 29, 2025) is located in Chiba Prefecture, within the Tokyo metropolitan area, just a 3-minute walk from the Tokyogakka Mae bus stop (approximately 9 minutes by bus or 25 minutes on foot to Shin-Urayasu Station). It is situated in an attractive residential neighborhood with palm-lined streets. Tokyo Disneyland, scenic parks along the bay, and large shopping malls are within walking distance. The area is of a high standard, featuring hotels such as the Disney Resort Hotels and the Hyatt Regency.

We occupy two floors of the sharehouse building, which includes one 6-person dormitory, two triple rooms, and five twin rooms. The twin rooms can also be booked for single occupancy. Most rooms are furnished in a Western style with beds; however, one twin room is Japanese-style, with futons. Some rooms have balconies. In shared rooms, we try to separate occupants by gender, although this cannot be guaranteed.

Residents also have access to a lounge, a dining area with a shared kitchen, 3 showers, 2 toilets, 2 coin-operated washing machines, an elevator, and a small outdoor area on the ground floor.

Host Families

Staying with a Japanese host family provides you with the ultimate opportunity to fully immerse yourself in everyday Japanese culture. Typically located in the outskirts of Tokyo and neighboring prefectures like Saitama, Chiba, and Kanagawa, host families choose these areas as central Tokyo apartments seldom offer sufficient space to accommodate foreign guests alongside their own family. Commuting by train to internship placements, jobs, or language schools usually takes no more than an hour, with a monthly commuter ticket costing around 15,000-20,000 yen.

Your host family will serve you two meals (breakfast and dinner) on weekdays and three meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) on weekends. You will have the option to sleep on a western-style bed or experience the traditional Japanese futon. Typically, there will be someone in the host family who speaks basic English, and they are well-acquainted with welcoming foreign guests.

Kyoto

Sharehouse in Kyoto

Our sharehouse in Kyoto is located in the Fushimi district in the south of Kyoto. From there, also destinations in Osaka, which forms a metropolitan region with Kyoto, are easily accessible by metro.

The house is a former residence with a shop in a traditional residential area. It features two dormitory rooms for eight people each (with a visual partition in the rooms, making each room more like two four-person rooms, further we try to separate by gender; however, this is not always possible and cannot be guaranteed), three twin rooms, two kitchens, a living room, two showers, two toilets, a small "powder room," and a covered outdoor seating area. Luggage can be stored at no extra cost. You can rent a bicycle at a low cost, and a coin-operated washing machine is available. Wi-Fi is accessible throughout the house.

In the same building, on the ground floor in the former shop space, you will find our support office, where you can easily meet our team members on weekdays. A small supermarket is just a minute's walk away, and a convenience store with an ATM is three minutes away. Nearby, along the Uji River, there is a large park.

The Fushimi district is known for its sake breweries and various temples and shrines, which are popular tourist attractions.

Okinawa

World Unite! house in Okinawa

Our house is located in a residential area, approximately 10 minutes' walk from a popular beach with a boardwalk. The "American Village," a large shopping and entertainment complex is also within walking distance. The house offers a multi-bed room for 4 people, a double room, a shared kitchen and living area, shared sanitary facilities with a washing machine, and a garden. We try to separate the rooms by gender; however, this is not always possible and cannot be guaranteed. The minimum rental period is one month.

Chatan is a popular vacation spot with many hotels, restaurants, and tourist attractions on Okinawa's west coast. This provides ample opportunities for Working Holiday participants to find jobs here. Additionally, Chatan houses a US military base, the largest in East Asia with over 20,000 people. Consequently, communicating in English is much more convenient in Chatan compared to the rest of Japan.
