Do you love horses above all else? In Ireland, we offer you opportunities to work on horse ranches, studs, and riding farms, where you'll receive free accommodation and meals for your work with horses! Not only do you get to do what you love, but you also learn to stand on your own abroad and potentially lay the groundwork for your future career in the horse industry.
Description

A dream for horse lovers - in Ireland, the Emerald Isle

Ireland's horse industry is known worldwide. Not only is the country renowned for its first-class racing horses, but it also boasts some of the best sport horses globally. With a position at stud farms, riding schools, or one of our horse-friendly family farms, you can gain experience in horse care and enhance your riding skills.

An island of horses

Did you know that some 53,000 people in Ireland are working in the sport horse sector? In addition, many hundreds of thousands of people in Ireland have horses as a hobby. There are horses literally everywhere on the Green Island! We offer placements on a variety of horse farms - from stud farms with many employees to small family farms, riding schools, and family breeders who train their own young stock and participate in local tournaments and competitions. You can imagine that there is always a lot to do on an Irish horse farm. You can get involved in all the activities that arise.

Activities on a horse farm

Barn jobs include simple grooming, feeding 2-3 times per day, mucking stalls and paddocks, filling and cleaning water buckets, turning horses out and bringing them in, sweeping the yard, etc.

Depending on your riding experience, you can, of course, also ride horses! If you are particularly interested in competition horses or show jumping, we will find a horse farm for you that suits your previous knowledge. You will learn how tournament horses are trained, gain insights into how a farm runs, and further develop your riding skills. Did you know that there are even stables in Ireland that run multi-day riding events at the Olympic level?

The jobs are unpaid, but you will receive free accommodation and meals from the horse ranch in exchange for your efforts.

Working in Ireland will not only allow you to travel abroad and gain international experience, but you will also acquire practical skills that can be extremely valuable for your resume or future studies/training if you’re seeking a new equine or animal-related career. Another great side effect: while in Ireland, you will improve your English skills by using the language in your daily life, i.e., with your local colleagues!

Your everyday working life in Ireland

You will work 5 days a week for about 40-45 hours and have 2 days off a week. Since there is always a lot to do on horse ranches, your days off do not necessarily fall on the weekends. If you work on the weekends, you will have days off during the week instead.

The exact working hours depend on your job and can vary, depending on the tasks to be done. Being flexible and having a hands-on mentality are key skills if you would like to gain a foothold in the equine industry.

Please note that the work can also be physically demanding, and you should be ready to work in cold, wet, hot, or early morning conditions.

The jobs are available all year round and can be tailored to your individual needs. You can set the exact period as it suits you best.

We do our best to organize a program according to your interests and expectations. Let us know the areas that interest you the most (e.g., whether you are more interested in horse care or want to gain tournament experience), and we will match you with a job that perfectly fits your interests and skills!

FAQs

How does the booking and matching process work?

Once you have booked, we will look for a horse ranch in Ireland for you. As soon as we have found a horse ranch, you will receive a "placement advice" from us, including a profile of the ranch and contact details. You can then communicate directly with the ranch yourself, ask them questions, and decide whether to accept it. If you accept the horse ranch, you sign the placement advice. If there is an understandable reason not to accept the horse ranch, we will look for an alternative ranch and send you a new placement advice.

Who can join

You should have at least 5 years of practical experience with horses. We are more interested in your level of confidence and expertise in handling horses rather than your riding skills. Please provide us with as much information as possible about your horse-related experiences. We also need photos and/or videos of you interacting with horses. The more information you share about your background, the better we can select a ranch that aligns perfectly with your preferences and expectations.

Due to Irish Labor Laws, participation is only open to participants who are enrolled in, or have recently graduated from, school, training or college at the time of their stay in Ireland. There needs to be a relation between the farm work and your future professional plans.

The participation is only possible to citizens who don't need a visa for Ireland for their planned duration of stay (e.g. citizens of the EU and EAA, USA, Australia etc) or who can arrange a visa on their own (e.g. Working Holiday Visa). Please note that Ireland is not part of the Schengen countries.

You should have no hesitation about physical work and be comfortable with getting your hands dirty, waking up early, and tackling tasks in rain, cold, etc.

Additionally, you should enjoy living in rural areas, where there may not be all the comforts and entertainment options available as in a big city.

Program start

The start is usually possible throughout the year on any day of the week, and you coordinate the exact arrival date with your Irish horse ranch.

Getting there

You fly to Dublin or, in case your job is on the west coast, to Shannon. Your flight should ideally arrive in the morning or early afternoon. From the airport, you will travel independently by train or bus to your assignment location. We will provide you with a detailed travel plan. You will be picked up by your host family at the nearest train or bus station.

Please note that Ireland is not a Schengen country. We cannot provide any documents required to apply for a visa. You can only join this program if you do not need a visa to enter Ireland.

Accommodation Options

In exchange for your work, you will receive free accommodation and meals. In most cases, you live directly with the family that runs the stud farm, riding school or farm. You will get an exciting insight into the life of Irish families and will also improve your English skills. If there is no accommodation available with the family on the ranch, accommodation will be provided at a host family nearby. Our local staff know all of our host families personally. Irish families are usually very hospitable and open-minded. Many families like to include interns in their everyday life and in their family activities.
