Tanzania is situated in East Africa just south of the equator. It stands out as one of the most captivating travel destinations on the African continent. Prominent attractions within Tanzania include Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain in Africa, the Serengeti, renowned as one of the world's most invaluable wildlife sanctuaries, the remarkable Ngorongoro Crater, and the exotic tropical paradise of Zanzibar in the Indian Ocean.
Operating actively in Tanzania since 2005, we have established ourselves as one of the country's largest and most reputable providers of volunteering, internships, and cultural learning programs. Our dedicated teams, offices, and accommodations are situated in key locations such as Moshi Town, Mweka (Kilimanjaro Forest Camp), Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Mwanza and Zanzibar. Through our NGO, "The World Unite for Environment and Social Sustainability (WUESS)" we actively contribute to Tanzania's sustainable development.
With a staggering annual economic growth rate of around 7%, Tanzania is experiencing rapid development. In addition to volunteering opportunities, we also arrange a diverse array of internships in Tanzania that provide insights into social and economic trends in a so-called developing country across different sectors, such as law, business, healthcare and architecture. Internships are also offered as remote programs, facilitating the acquisition of such knowledge without the need for travel.
Renowned for its political stability and safety, Tanzania is a secure travel destination. Even for solo female travelers, when adhering to basic guidelines there are minimal security risks. The national languages spoken are Swahili and English.

Kilimanjaro Forest Camp
The Kilimanjaro Forest Camp serves as the site for our "Mother Nature Environmental Protection" volunteering program at Kilimanjaro. Situated within walking distance of the Mweka Gate of Kilimanjaro National Park, this camp sits at an elevation of 2000 meters (6500 ft) on the terraced grounds of a community tree nursery. Enveloped by tropical rainforest and small coffee plantations, it is providing a striking panorama of the Moshi Town plains.
As a volunteer at our Mother Nature program in Mweka, you will engage in a diverse array of activities encompassing reforestation, environmental conservation, and environmental education. You will also become an integral part of the farming community in the village of Mweka, inhabited by the Chagga ethnic group. At Kilimanjaro Forest Camp, your accommodation consists of comfortable, fully furnished shared tents equipped with toilets and showers. Alternatively, for those seeking immersion in local customs, arrangements can be made for a stay with a Chagga host family.
The "Mother Nature Environmental Protection" volunteering program presents an exclusive and exhilarating chance to acquaint yourself with rural Tanzania. By participating in the extensive reforestation program, you will actively contribute to the vital cause of climate protection.
Accommodation at Kilimanjaro
Mother Nature Climate Change Camp
In the terraced expanse of the community tree nursery, you'll find three comfortable safari tents arranged on different levels. Each tent accommodates a maximum of 6 participants, offering 3 bunk beds complete with mosquito nets. Positioned atop platforms, these tents are shielded from sun and rain by sturdy wooden roofs thatched with palm fronds. Each tent is attached to a brick structure featuring a toilet and a separate hot and cold shower.
Nestled amidst the tents, a communal space unfolds, featuring a kitchen edifice, a sheltered pergola, and tables with outdoor seating. This is where the community cook will serve your meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner). The kitchen is equipped with triple-filtered drinking water, provided at no additional cost.
In crafting the World Unite! Kilimanjaro Forest Camp, ecological considerations took precedence. Solar power drives all tent lighting and cell phone charging stations. The camp maximizes the use of local and renewable construction materials. Your security is reinforced by round-the-clock surveillance from two guards, and a secure safe is available for your valuables.
Host Families of the Mweka Community
The majority of the Mweka community members are part of the Chagga ethnic group who are mostly farming on Kilimanjaro's southern and eastern slopes. Their cultivation encompasses cash crops such as coffee and bananas, as well as more recent additions like avocados. Additionally, yams, corn, and beans constitute typical crops. Chagga villages are often arranged in clusters, with individual homes dispersed over a wider expanse within the forests adorning Kilimanjaro's inclines.
During your stay, you will be integrated into one of the 35 families affiliated with the community tree nursery. Accommodation will comprise a simple single room, equipped with a bed complete with mosquito netting and running cold water.

Moshi
Moshi is a city located in northern Tanzania, nestled at the base of Kilimanjaro. The city serves as the starting point for all Kilimanjaro expeditions and many safaris in the northern Tanzanian national parks. Numerous excursion opportunities await in the vicinity of the city. Kilimanjaro International Airport lies approximately 40 km/25 miles away from Moshi. The city has thrived thanks to tourism, as well as the trade of coffee and bananas. Situated at an elevation of 813 meters/2700 feet, Moshi boasts a year-round climate that many find exceptionally pleasant, particularly when contrasted with the humid heat often experienced along the Tanzanian coast or on the Indian Ocean islands.
World Unite! is one of the largest and longest-standing organization active in Moshi and the Kilimanjaro region in the field of volunteering and internship programs. Our comprehensive infrastructure includes an on-site international support team, a support office, and accommodations in Moshi. We offer an extensive array of options spanning diverse fields of activity and interests. Our remote internships with Moshi-based organizations have gained popularity, as have our Swahili language programs—both online and on-site. Additionally, our Adventure Tours, which seamlessly blend volunteering and tourist experiences, are highly sought after.
In Moshi, we regularly conduct cultural workshops for our participants, such as bamboo carving, Kanga wrapping, and Swahili cooking classes. Moshi is also the location of our Mother Nature Kilimanjaro Climate Change Camp. For this, we operate a botanical garden and a workspace in Moshi-Karanga.

The KCMC Residence is a new and well-maintained accommodation with bungalows, each containing 1-3 bedrooms. Each bedroom in the bungalows can be booked for single or double occupancy. There are rooms with two single beds and rooms with a double bed. Each bungalow accommodates up to 6 residents who share a bathroom with a hot shower, complimentary toiletries and towels, a separate toilet, a communal kitchen with a refrigerator, stove, toaster, oven, and kitchen utensils, a lounge with a flat-screen TV, and a terrace. There is a garden between the bungalows. Continental breakfast, Wi-Fi, and private parking are included in the price.
KDC Shared House
The spacious shared house for World Unite! participants is located in the KDC area of Moshi Town. It comprises 3 large bedrooms, one of which serves as a 4-bed dormitory, while the other two are used for double or single occupancy. All rooms feature private bathrooms with toilets and hot water. Additionally, the house includes a shared living room, a kitchen with a dining area, and a large garden. The house has a security guard and a backup power generator. The KDC bus stop is just a minute's walk from the house, providing a 10-minute Daladala ride to the city center or a half-hour walk. In the immediate vicinity of the house, there are several shops, restaurants, and bars.
Siarick Cottages
Siarick Cottages is a new and well-maintained guesthouse, designed in Tanzanian style and operated by a local family in the Kiboroloni area of Moshi Town. The 16 rooms, available for single, double, or triple occupancy, all come with private bathrooms featuring hot showers and toilets. Siarick also uses solar lighting, which is very useful in case of electricity cuts at night. The premises are fenced and there is 24-hour security. You can choose between 3-share room accommodation (three single beds) and double rooms with other participants of the same gender or single room accommodation.
Host Families in Moshi
Staying with a host family gives you the opportunity to gain an in-depth look at Tanzanian culture and society. We cooperate with host families in the urban area of Moshi, whose living conditions are of medium and high standard. What this means exactly, we want to explain in the following.
The host families we collaborate with belong to Tanzania's upper middle class, and their homes meet standards that are well-suited for the majority of our participants in terms of construction quality, amenities, and furnishings. Typically, these houses are equipped with two tiled bathrooms—one for the parents and another shared by the children of the family and yourself. The availability of hot water for showers can vary. Western-style water toilets are typically provided in the house.
The host families provide meals that reflect typical Tanzanian cuisine. Breakfast might consist of toast with jam, egg omelettes, and tea. For dinner, expect dishes such as meat or fish with vegetables, served alongside rice, ugali, or chapati. Tea, boiled water, or homemade fruit juice is commonly offered. Vegetarian meals can be accommodated upon request.
In these households, refrigerators are usually present, and cooking is primarily done using gas. Domestic helpers are often part of the family structure, responsible for tasks like cooking, cleaning, and hand-washing laundry. Inside the living rooms, you'll find decorative curtains and doilies, as well as amenities like a stereo system, television, and an older laptop. As a common possession, the family typically owns a secondhand Japanese car. However, such items are often accumulated over many years due to financial constraints. The family's main priority is usually investing in their children's higher education, and the car is primarily utilized for absolutely essential journeys.
Other Locations in Tanzania

Dar-es-Salaam, often referred to as "Dar", serves as Tanzania's economic, industrial, and commercial hub, boasting a population of 4.5 million. Situated 35 km/22 miles away, the island of Zanzibar is easily accessible by ferry from Dar. The city's primary airport, Dar International Airport (DAR), stands as the largest in Tanzania.
Initially, the city might not reveal its charms, but after a few days, most of our participants grow fond of "Bongo"-Town. "Bongo" roughly translates to "clever" and is derived from the Swahili word "ubongo", meaning "brain." This term encapsulates the notion that navigating the metropolis requires sharp wits, a reality that any "mshamba" (countryman) contemplating a move to Dar-es-Salaam should understand. The city experiences an annual population growth of 10%, primarily due to rural migrants from various regions of Tanzania who settle in the sprawling peripheries of the city.
In Dar-es-Salaam, we arrange internships in fields such as architecture, media, business and healthcare, both as on-site and remote internships.

Mwanza stands as the second-largest city in Tanzania and serves as the focal point of the northwestern "Lake Region". The city's urban planning has resulted in a relatively modern city center, characterized by broad streets encircling the central clock tower. Unlike the bustling environments of Dar-es-Salaam and Arusha, Mwanza exudes a laid-back ambiance. A substantial portion of Mwanza's residents are engaged in the fishing industry. Mwanza also serves as a gateway to the Serengeti National Park from the western side. Lake Victoria, adorned with its shores and islands, contributes to the area's appealing landscape. In terms of cost of living, Mwanza offers a more affordable alternative compared to Dar-es-Salaam or Zanzibar.
Within Mwanza, we facilitate internships specifically in the realm of medicine and nursing, located at the second-largest hospital complex in Tanzania.

In addition to Moshi, Arusha stands as the second prominent tourist city in northern Tanzania and serves as a starting point for numerous safaris. With a population of approximately 400,000 residents, Arusha surpasses Moshi in size.
Within Arusha, we arrange selected internships, catering to a variety of fields including medicine, law, solar technology, and more. These internships are available as both on-site and remote internships. Given that Arusha is only about 1.5 hours away from Moshi, there exists a vibrant interchange among our participants situated in these two locations.

You can do a remote internship with a Tanzanian organization or company without the need for travel. This option allows you to engage in areas like social work, economics, law, microfinance, technology, agriculture, environmental protection, and more.
You'll communicate online with a qualified internship supervisor proficient in the field. Tanzania is experiencing rapid development, providing abundant learning prospects on topics spanning social dynamics, economics, and sustainable development.

Zanzibar, a tropical archipelago located in the Indian Ocean off the Tanzanian coast, stands as one of our primary locations hosting a diverse array of programs. We maintain a dedicated page specifically focused on Zanzibar.
We recommend to combine participation in the program on the mainland of Tanzania with a stay in Zanzibar. We offer reduced combination prices if you combine several programs!

We offer several volunteering and internship opportunities in rural settings in Tanzania, encompassing places like Lutindi in the Usambara Mountains, Sanya Juu, and Boma Ng'ombe. If you are seeking a more rustic and less developed experience of life in Tanzania, this is your choice!
