Remote Newspaper Internship in Tanzania
Tanzania Standard Newspapers (TSN) is a state-owned publisher that produces the English-language daily printed newspaper Daily News, the weekly Sunday News, and the Swahili-language daily HabariLEO and sports edition SpotiLEO, along with their online versions. TSN also creates social media content for platforms like X, Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook. The organization has its own modern printing facilities and a nationwide distribution system. Its editorial sections cover national news, international news, politics, society, business, science, health, sports, and entertainment.
The TSN headquarters is located in Dar es Salaam, with numerous regional offices across Tanzania. These offices produce regional news as well as contribute content to the main edition.
During the remote internship, you’ll work directly with an editor from either the headquarters or one of the regional offices. You’ll receive topic suggestions to research and create content in English, including image research. Additionally, you’ll write articles in English based on agency reports. You’ll also have the opportunity to propose your own topics and write articles independently, which may even be published.
Remote Internship with a Journalists' Association
Every region in Tanzania has journalists' associations (“Press Clubs”), whose members are primarily freelance journalists. These press clubs support their members by offering training events, exchange programs, market research, and scholarships to ensure professionalism in Tanzanian journalism. They advocate for press freedom and aim to contribute to a well-informed society.
You can intern with a press club and be assigned to an experienced freelance journalist who acts as your supervisor. These journalists provide content to various publishers on topics such as politics, business, sports, lifestyle, and culture. You’ll assist with research and write articles or scripts for videos. The experienced journalists can usually give you deep insights into the work of a freelance journalists and the Tanzanian media industry.
If interested, you can also participate in the activities of the press club and learn how such organizations are structured and operate.
