Description

Your Internship organization

SPIC (Salma Prabhu's Institute of Counseling) is a psychological counseling center in Navi Mumbai. Alongside the founder, Salma, SPIC has 10 employed psychologists.

Since its inception in 1996, over 400,000 individuals have been counseled at ACE. ACE focuses on career counseling, special education, psychological counseling for individuals, and psychological services for companies (training and human resources). SPIC is also an authorized training partner for Pearson Clinical Assessments.

The ideology of SPIC developed from Salma Prabhu's observations in the 1990s, noting that societal changes in India led many people to struggle with managing social life, careers, and social status. SPIC's goal is to enhance people's life satisfaction.

Salma Prabhu, who holds an MA in Clinical Psychology and several postgraduate diplomas in various psychological specializations, is a well-known psychologist in India. She regularly writes columns for leading newspapers such as Mumbai Mirror, Times of India, and DNA, and has published numerous psychology books and audio publications. She developed the MA program in Counseling for the TATA Institute of Social Sciences and teaches there, as well as the postgraduate program "Guidance and Counseling" for SIES Mumbai. She worked as a TV psychologist on Saam TV for several years. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she was asked by the municipal government of Navi Mumbai to develop a program for pandemic coping mechanisms for state hospital employees and to operate a counseling hotline for people in quarantine.

Approximately 30% of SPIC's work involves career counseling, 40% focuses on children with learning difficulties (e.g., dyslexia, ADHD), and 30% is psychological counseling (including clinical and organizational psychology). All work with corporate clients (HR training, lectures, etc.) is conducted by Salma and her husband Rajesh Prabhu. In the outreach program, employees from around 40 schools and social institutions receive training and counseling on psychological topics.

Read a review from Veronica:

Dear Miriam, dear Salma,

I would like to give a feedback about my time at SPIC:

My time at SPIC was incredible. Salma Prabhu gave me a warm welcome to India, from day one she took me to immerse myself in culture, food, history, family life and much more. Examples include meals made by her, her family, or friends or street food, preparing food together, visits to different families, trips to temples, attending a wedding, and trips to the countryside. She was always helpful in everyday matters and even organized an online yoga class for me. Life in the vibrant city of Navi Mumbai was incredibly intense and an experience of a lifetime.

My psychological areas of activity were in particular in the areas of counselling and therapy for children with learning deficits and/or ADHD, career counselling and the various associated psychometric assessments. I attended the sessions on-site or online as an observer, prepared reports, learned basics about counselling, was made familiar with the tests and was assigned to create a questionnaire. Salma Prabhu also attached importance to the fact that individual visits of psychologists from her large network gave me an insight into local institutions, such as a state project school, a public and a private hospital, a rehabilitation centre for addicts and the work of a psychiatrist. This was fantastic for getting a more differentiated and deeper understanding of India (and the psychology there). I also took part in two voluntary workshops given by Salma Prabhu in preparation for the final exams at schools in the slum area, which again was an enormously interesting experience.

Many thanks to Salma Prabhu for giving me this amazing time.

With kind regards,
Veronika

Read a review from Noémi:

Dear WorldUnite! Team,

I have finished my online internship with SPIC and I would like to thank you for this opportunity and give a short feedback about it.

First I was wondering, how a remote internship in counseling can work, but the organization from SPIC was professional, so that the interns could attend the sessions, as if there were no distances. It gave me the opportunity to observe live sessions mainly in career counseling, and to gain practical experience in counseling. I could reflect about the techniques and role of a psychologist.

The areas at SPIC are very broadly positioned. Everybody can find their personal interest in the field of psychology, and can work in that specific area or widen their knowledge in others. It was amazing how much I could learn in only a 2 months' interval.

Salma and Rajesh Prabhu were always there for the intern's questions, so that every doubt could be solved in a very short time. They are open minded, friendly persons and it is remarkable how much energy they put into the work with their interns, considering that they have their centres to run and their clients to take care of.

Besides the psychological topics, Mrs Prabhu always presented us with additional information about Indian culture and the actual festivals, which also gave me some fascinating intercultural insights.

All in all it was an amazing life experience for me.

Thanks & Regards,
Noémi
