Swahili
Swahili (self-designation: Kiswahili) is the most widely spoken language in East Africa. Approximately 90 million people in Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda, Congo, and Mozambique speak Swahili.
Although structurally Swahili clearly belongs to the Bantu languages, its vocabulary includes a large number of Arabic, Persian, Indian, English, and to a lesser extent, Portuguese words. This reflects the origin of the language, which emerged from the encounter between East African coastal residents and seafaring traders. The purest form of Swahili is spoken in Zanzibar and along the Tanzanian coast.
Zanzibar
Zanzibar is a tropical island state in the Indian Ocean, about 2 hours by ship or 20 minutes by plane from the Tanzanian mainland. In the past, Zanzibar was very wealthy, as the island was an important trading port at the crossroads between Africa, Arabia, India, East Asia, and Europe. This is evident today in the blending of cultures, making Zanzibar a popular destination not only for its idyllic beaches and beautiful weather but also for its cultural richness.
One-to-one Lessons in Zanzibar
We offer Swahili language lessons in Zanzibar, emphasizing communication and practical application. Our instructors are young adults from Zanzibar who received their language teacher training from a non-profit foundation.
A portion of their salary for providing language instruction to foreign Swahili learners goes back to the non-profit school, thus supporting the education of more young individuals. Through this form of Swahili language instruction, you not only learn the language but also have fun with young Zanzibaris, contributing to the education and empowerment of young people from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
Thanks to scholarships from the Rotary Club Zanzibar, many of the teachers had the opportunity to study abroad in the USA, where they improved their English skills, enabling them to communicate effectively in English.
All teachers can accommodate small groups for lessons if they share a similar language proficiency level.
From beginner courses to advanced classes, all levels are possible.
You have the flexibility to determine the intensity of the lessons—part-time, approximately 10 hours per week, or intensive, 20 hours per week. Considering the inclusion of homework, we recommend not exceeding 20 hours per week. The lesson times are flexible and can be coordinated with the instructors.
Classes take place in the premises of the non-profit foundation in a district of Zanzibar Town.
Tip:
If you want to experience Swahili in two attractive locations, you can book Swahili in Zanzibar alongside Swahili in Moshi/Kilimanjaro with us. Instructors at both locations can coordinate your lessons.
It's also possible to combine Remote Swahili and On-site Swahili lessons. If you are interested, please send us an inquiry, and we will provide you with a personalized offer!
