Tourism in Zanzibar
While in the past, spending a few days in Zanzibar were seen more as an "add-on" to safaris and Kilimanjaro climbs in Tanzania, since the mid-2010s, Zanzibar has become one of the top 10 trendy travel destinations worldwide. Tourism has developed enormously in recent years and is the main source and driver of income, employment, and development for the tropical island in the Indian Ocean.
While the large hotels are firmly in the hands of international chains and investors, it is legally required that only locals can operate in Zanzibar as travel agents and transport providers. There are about 10 medium-sized and a large number of small travel agencies offering typical services such as half-day and full-day excursions like the "Spice Tour," "Stone Town Tour," "Jozani Forest Tour," "Prison Island Trip," sailing tours on traditional dhows, and hotel transfers. Many Zanzibar travel agencies also sell safaris on the Tanzanian mainland, as well as ship and flight tickets for domestic travel in Tanzania. They cooperate as "inbound providers" with foreign travel agencies that send them tourists to take care of at the destination.
Your Role as a Tourism Intern in Zanzibar
As an intern with a Zanzibar tour operator, you can gain insight into how tourism works in Zanzibar. Typically, you bring your foreign perspective to the design of new and the improvement of existing tourism offerings, as well as support the Zanzibar company in marketing and communication with foreign partners and travelers. You usually work in a small office in Zanzibar Town, where most travel agencies are based, together with the local team.
If you are enrolled in a relevant degree program, have graduated, or already have professional experience, we can usually arrange an internship with a larger tour operator, if you wish. If you do not yet have relevant experience, the internship will typically take place with a smaller tour operator.
