Zanzibar - A Cultural Melting Pot
Zanzibar possesses a rich and colorful cultural heritage due to its history and role as a major trading hub in the Indian Ocean.
The cultural influences include traditional African art and craft traditions and aesthetics such as textiles, wood carvings, beadwork, and pottery. These were expanded by the influence of the Omani Arabs, incorporating designs such as the famous Zanzibari doors, calligraphy, and geometric patterns into various art forms. The Persians inspired Zanzibari weavers in the design of textiles and carpets. Indian immigrants, particularly from Gujarat, introduced new techniques such as metalwork, jewelry making, and henna designs. Today, the Zanzibari art scene also shows influences from many different international art styles like Tinga Tinga, Pop Art, Minimalism, and Expressionism.
The main income for Zanzibari artists and craftsmen comes from selling their products to tourists. However, people from rural areas of Zanzibar and women are minimally involved in the lucrative art and souvenir market and hardly benefit financially from it.
What does your organization do?
The Zanzibari non-governmental organization FAZACH opened the Cultural Arts Centre Zanzibar (CACZ) in Stone Town in 2008, with the aim of promoting Zanzibari culture. Through CACZ, local artists and craftsmen from the entire island have the opportunity to receive training and sell their products. The focus is on locally produced art objects and souvenirs made from environmentally sustainable materials. Artists and craftsmen, even from remote areas and women's cooperatives, have the chance to reach tourists through the center and thereby earn an income. Thus, CACZ plays an important role in sustainable community development.
The products offered at the center include paintings, embroidery, beadwork, weaving, textiles, soaps, carvings, sustainable cultured pearls, jewelry, products made from recycled materials, and much more. The Cultural Arts Centre also functions as a wholesaler of sustainably produced souvenirs for the gift shops in hotels.
How can you contribute?
As an intern at CACZ, you can contribute in various ways:
- Identify innovative ways to create art, crafts, and other products from sustainable materials
- Conduct research on the tourist souvenir market in Zanzibar to better understand which souvenirs visitors are interested in and their price sensitivity
- Develop product and packaging designs
- Optimize the sales and exhibition space in the art center
- Create promotional materials for CACZ products and educate travelers about sustainability in souvenir purchasing
- Manage finances and retail planning
- Work with local artists at the Cultural Art Centre, helping them improve their English and internet skills
- Document artists, create profiles about them, and share their stories with visitors of the art center
- Strengthen contact with communities and artists, establish new contacts and partnerships
- Organize workshops for locals and tourists. These workshops are offered to tourists to generate income and to local groups for their education. The workshops cover areas such as bookbinding, candle making, papermaking, painting and drawing, jewelry making from paper beads, soap making, and screen printing.
Participants at CACZ should either be creative or contribute in the field of business and administration. The contribution and implementation of own ideas are desirable at the placement. Independence and self-motivation are very important for a successful placement.
