Type of program

Volunteering

In Zanzibar, you can be a volunteer football (soccer) coach or track and field athletics coach. You don't have to be a professional trainer, but you should have good knowledge in the particular sport you want to train. You either work for the organisation "Zanzibar Football Standard & Talents Advancement", which promotes and discovers young soccer talents or for "Zanzibar Amateur Athletics Association", which offers athletics training for all age groups.
Description

Football (soccer) coach in Zanzibar

The organization "Zanzibar Football Standard and Talents Advancement" has set itself the goal of discovering football talent and promoting and elevating the level of football on the island. Additionally, it aims to provide meaningful and healthy recreational activities to children and young people through football, keeping them away from the dangers of drug abuse or crime.

The work is organized through 15 local volunteers who regularly scout for talent on the island, observing games held in various locations. Currently, 45 talents have been identified, and they gather every Saturday and Sunday at the "Samulizi Ground" behind the large Amani Stadium in Zanzibar for training.

Volunteers can participate in both talent scouting and football training. Since the organization operates completely on a voluntary basis and only operates on weekends, and thus cannot offer full-time employment for foreign volunteers, you can choose from the following options for weekdays:

  • Offer football or other sports activities in other facilities for children and young people in Zanzibar Town, which we will introduce to you. Please communicate with us about the suitable timeframe for you, and we will suggest opportunities for involvement.
  • Combine with the athletics volunteer placement (see below).
  • Some of our former football volunteers in Zanzibar have also organized tournaments where various village and district clubs participated.

Track and field athletics coach in Zanzibar

The "Zanzibar Amateur Athletics Association" conducts athletic training for all ages, catering to both male and female athletes. Participants train athletes in sprinting, mid and long-distance running, as well as jumping and throwing events. Some athletes participate in international competitions and receive benefits that help them qualify for world championships and the Olympic Games. Women in Zanzibar, in particular, have been successful sprinters. Mr. Gulaam, the head of the Association, has participated several times in the World Championships in the 400-meter hurdles.

Due to high temperatures in the afternoons, training usually takes place early in the morning from around 6:30 a.m. at the Amani Stadium, the main stadium in Zanzibar, which has electronic measuring systems. Additionally, from around 4:30 p.m., the parks of Maisara are frequented by sports clubs, and athletics and soccer training are held daily.

As a track and field volunteer, you can specialize in the disciplines that suit you best and assist local coaches. You can also choose which age group you would like to train.

Accommodation Options

Shared Accommodation

We operate two World Unite! shared apartments in Zanzibar Town. If you choose shared accommodation, we will assign one to you based on availability and proximity to your internship or volunteering location. Both flat shares offer a comparable standard of accommodation. One apartment is located in Baghani, and the other one is in Migombani.

Migombani

The spacious apartment in Migombani is located on the 2nd upper floor with views of the blue ocean. It has its own kitchen, toilets, bathrooms, and a communal living room. There is also a spacious garden. You can choose between 4-share rooms (each with 2 bunk beds), double rooms, and single rooms. The 4-share rooms have their own en-suite bathrooms, while the double/single rooms share a bathroom and toilet with other residents. The beds/bedrooms are equipped with mosquito nets, a wardrobe or chest of drawers, and a fan. Bed linen is provided, but please bring your own towels. The bathrooms have western flush toilets and cold showers, which can be refreshing given the temperatures in Zanzibar. The shared kitchens are equipped with electric or gas stoves and a basic set of kitchen utensils for cooking and eating. The shared living room has a sofa and dining table. There is also a communal washing machine in the house. For security purposes, the windows are barred, and a night watchman is present at night. Shopping and dining options are within easy walking distance.

Baghani

The Baghani apartment is located on the first floor of a historic building in the Baghani area of Stone Town. It offers four fully furnished bedrooms suitable for single and double occupancy. The kitchen is equipped with a gas and electric stove, refrigerator, and functional kitchen equipment. There are two bathrooms with cold showers and western water toilets. Bed linen is provided, but please bring your own towels. Each room has a ceiling fan and mosquito nets. There are many dining options available in Stone Town.

Host Families

Staying with a host family provides you with a unique opportunity to gain a more in-depth insight into the culture and society of Zanzibar. We collaborate with several host families in Zanzibar Town who can be described as belonging to the upper-middle class of Zanzibar. Most of our participants consider their houses to be absolutely suitable to be accommodated at. The houses often have two tiled bathrooms, one for the use of the parents of the family, and another one for the children and guests like yourself. Please note that hot water may not always be available. The houses are equipped with either Western-style toilets or Arab squat toilets with flushing water.

The host families provide two meals per day, typically breakfast and dinner, which usually consist of Zanzibari-Arabic dishes. Breakfast may include deep-fried donuts and chapati, while dinner often features pilau rice and biryani, accompanied by tea, boiled water, or homemade fruit juice. Vegetarian meals are available upon request. The families typically employ domestic helpers to assist with cooking, cleaning, and laundry. They usually have a fridge that you can also use. In the living rooms of these families, you will often find decorative Arabic curtains, ornamental objects, a stereo system, and a large flat-screen TV. Additionally, the families may own a used Japanese car. However, in order to purchase those items, the family often had to make savings during many years, and the family may, even though it might not look like that, still face financial difficulties, such as financing their children's higher education. They often only use the car for absolutely necessary journeys as petrol is expensive.

Extras

Extras Swahili

Swahili Lessons

Although Swahili knowledge is not a requirement for your participation, basic Swahili skills can make communication easier on-site. The language is relatively simple to learn. The lessons are offered as private instruction in Zanzibar Town by young Swahili teachers. You can decide the intensity of your lessons and book a certain number of hours (1 hour = 60 minutes) under "Extras." If you plan to take Swahili lessons alongside your internship or volunteering, we recommend a maximum of 10 hours per week.

Extras SUP

SUP Sunset Tour

Stand-up Paddleboarding (SUP) is a fun and easy-to-learn water sport. At least twice a month, we organize a SUP Sunset Tour for our program participants through the calm mangroves of Chukwani, located about 20 minutes from our accommodations in Zanzibar Town. A guide will introduce you to the rich mangrove ecosystem as you enjoy a breathtaking sunset on your paddleboard. Light snacks and drinks are included. The tour lasts approximately 1.5 hours. You will receive the schedule of tours available during your stay after booking.

Football coaching in Zanzibar (by Art Stavenko):

I had two teams to coach - in Zanzibar City and in Uzi Island. I had had some coaching experience before, but this time was absolutely unique and breathtaking.

The first team consisted of 15-18 years old kids. We learned a lot of exercises and combinations, trying to pick up how to think on football pitch, as physically they are all very gifted. I brought with me many souvenirs from the famous English clubs which the kids adore, and awarded one prize for the best player of the day. It was a real solemn ceremony when all the players and people from the nearby areas gathered in the centre of the football field to find out who was a hero today. I am also very grateful that the members of ZAFSA organization escorted me back home after every single training. After two weeks all the players passed through various tests, and I provided the results of it with my recommendations to the head of ZAFSA.

I had just six trainings in Uzi with a local team. Despite the age of the players varied from 18 to 35, it was a real pleasure to coach them as they tried to absorb every feint or advice. The team participated in some Zanzibar championship, and after the games we were analyzing their mistakes on the improvised pitch-hardware on the ground with baobab seeds instead of players.

The culmination of our trainings was an inter-island tournament (named Zanzibarian Urafiki Cup) organized with the kind help of World Unite! and ZAFSA members. We expected about 80 young players coming from Stone Town and Uzi island to the stadium to play for the big Cup. I ordered the cup from the US, but, ironically, it was not delivered in time leaving me in the awkward situation. Finally, after hectic searches and with priceless help of Mr. Aliy and Mr.Freddy of World Unite!, I managed to find a large decent cup in one of the Zanzibar shops. I felt like I have bought the last cup left in this world.

The tournament seemed to be a success. There were prizes for the two best players and some free coconut juice for the the rest. In the end, I used Coca-Cola crates to construct a podium, and the captain of the winning team lifted up the cup to the battle-cries accompaniment of the players.
