Agriculture in Zanzibar
In Zanzibar, tropical fruits are cultivated, mainly various types of mangoes, guavas, citrus fruits, and bananas, as well as vegetables like cucumbers, tomatoes, and avocados. The farms primarily produce for the local market. Only exquisite mango varieties such as Muyuni and Mwarugo are exported to the Gulf region. Like all traditional farms in Zanzibar, the farms are characterized by a wide variety of planted species. Extensive mixed cropping is practiced, where species are combined in close proximity to each other, reducing potential pests of one species by the presence of another. Synthetic pesticides are substituted, for example, by using oil from neem tree seeds. Crop rotation is also practiced to maintain soil quality with some fruit and vegetable varieties.
Internship on Mr. Foum's Farm
Mr. Foum cultivates various tropical fruits and spices on his farm. Additionally, he grows mushrooms and runs a demonstration and educational garden with a collection of interesting tropical plants. He can also connect you with other farms that grow tropical vegetables and rice, as well as operate greenhouses. You can also visit the Kizimbani Tree Nursery and Coral Rag Farms, which manage coral rock in a collective farming system. Moreover, you can visit the agrometeorological station, the Kizimbani Agricultural Training Institute (KATI), and the Zanzibar Agricultural Research Institute (ZARI), and learn about biodiversity in the Jozani Forest National Park.
You will participate in the daily agricultural activities both on Mr.Foum's farm and on other farms with different focuses, allowing you to learn about various aspects of tropical agriculture. Mr. Foum will develop a program tailored to your interests and provides qualified internship supervision. If you are interested, your program can also include visits to the aforementioned research and training institutes. You will also have access to the agricultural specialist library of the Kizimbani Agricultural Institute.
If you are interested in specific topics that could be suitable for dissertations, research projects, and similar, we can cover various themes. It would be conceivable to research the planning and construction of irrigation systems, biological weed control, optimization of perennial crops (mainly tropical fruits), residue management after harvest, and storage and preservation of tropical fruits to sell them at higher prices off-season.
