Type of program

Internship

Urban Care Clinic is a high-standard health center with several physicians, located in the planned city of Fumba Town, outside Zanzibar Town, led by a German doctor. Clinical electives for medical students from their 4th year and nursing internships for students from their 3rd year are available in the fields of internal and general medicine.
Description

Urban Care Clinic

The clinic provides outpatient services for general medicine, prenatal and postnatal care, ultrasound examinations, laboratory work, a dental practice, nutritional counseling, psychotherapy, and an in-house pharmacy. An emergency doctor is on call 24/7. Private patient rooms with en-suite bathrooms are available for temporary inpatient care.

Urban Care Clinic is one of the best medical practices in Zanzibar. Its medical director, Dr. Jenny Bouraima, was trained in Germany and holds a Master of Science in Global Health and Infectious Diseases (GHID) from the University of Edinburgh. Alongside her, the clinic is staffed by another general practitioner, a dentist, a physiotherapist, several nurses, a lab technician, a nutritionist, and a psychotherapist. The center emphasizes care and empathy for patients.

While many patients belong to Zanzibar's financial upper class, who can afford the premium medical services of the private clinic, those in precarious financial situations receive the same medical care at significantly reduced prices.

Urban Care also conducts community outreach programs in villages, focusing on screenings for conditions such as diabetes and hypertension, as well as awareness campaigns on topics like women’s health, cancer awareness, healthy nutrition, and mental health.

Around 15 patients are seen daily, excluding those reached through outreach programs.

Clinical electives and nursing internships in the clinic

Clinical electives and nursing internships are currently only available in internal and general medicine with the two general practitioners.

Part of the program fee includes a contribution to the clinic, which is fully used to fund the charitable outreach programs.

Booking Process

We first need to check the availability of this internship with the host organization. For this, please send us your CV/resume in English by email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or via WhatsApp to +81-90-4702-1361, and let us know your approximate preferred time period. This is completely free of charge for you and without any obligation.

If you need to do a mandatory internship for school/university credit, you can send us the requirements (e.g. tasks, type of supervision, number of hours). We will then check whether the internship meets these requirements.

We can usually confirm your internship within a few days. In the rare case that your internship is not available, we can often suggest a similar alternative internship placement.

After our confirmation, you secure your place by paying a deposit of 100 EUR/USD. The remaining balance is due one month before the program start.

You can also decide on your accommodation and any extras at a later stage.

Who can join

The program is aimed at medical students in at least their 4th year (or higher) and nursing students in at least their 3rd year (or higher).

Program start

Arrival is possible every Wednesday.

Getting there

You book a flight to Zanzibar (ZNZ). At the airport we will pick you up and bring you to your accommodation (if included in your package or booked separately). Please share your flight details with us.

From some countries, flights to Dar-es-Salaam (DAR) might be cheaper. From DAR you might book a separate connecting flight to ZNZ.

Visa

Volunteer Visa: 50 USD (for most nationals; to buy on arrival at the airport in Tanzania; only US citizens pay 100 USD; we will send you an invitation letter that you show on arrival in order to get the correct visa) + Work Permit 200 USD (we arrange it through the Zanzibar Labour Office)

For entry into Zanzibar, a mandatory health insurance is required, for which a one-time fee of 44 USD applies for any duration of stay of up to 90 days.

Accommodation Options

Fumba Town is a planned city with mid-range to upscale houses and apartments. The first houses were occupied around 2020, and the community has been growing gradually. It is a gated community accessible only with authorization. Within the area, there are small park-like spaces, playgrounds, basic infrastructure such as a few restaurants and shops, and a community pool.

Many houses serve as vacation homes for foreigners who are not always in Zanzibar or as retirement residences. Many residents are from Germany, South Africa, or Arab countries. However, Zanzibaris and Tanzanians also live in Fumba Town. Urban Care Clinic is the only medical center in Fumba Town. Adjacent to Fumba Town are several villages and Zanzibar's conference center.

Accommodation for this internship is provided in a house in Fumba Town with three bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, and two terraces, just a one-minute walk from the clinic within the gated community.

Extras

Extras Swahili

Swahili Lessons

Although Swahili knowledge is not a requirement for your participation, basic Swahili skills can make communication easier on-site. The language is relatively simple to learn. The lessons are offered as private instruction in Zanzibar Town by young Swahili teachers. You can decide the intensity of your lessons and book a certain number of hours (1 hour = 60 minutes) under "Extras." If you plan to take Swahili lessons alongside your internship or volunteering, we recommend a maximum of 10 hours per week.

Extras SUP

SUP Sunset Tour

Stand-up Paddleboarding (SUP) is a fun and easy-to-learn water sport. At least twice a month, we organize a SUP Sunset Tour for our program participants through the calm mangroves of Chukwani, located about 20 minutes from our accommodations in Zanzibar Town. A guide will introduce you to the rich mangrove ecosystem as you enjoy a breathtaking sunset on your paddleboard. Light snacks and drinks are included. The tour lasts approximately 1.5 hours. You will receive the schedule of tours available during your stay after booking.
