Description

Internships and Volunteering with Organizations for Women’s Development in Tanzania

In Tanzania, women play a crucial role in their families and village or neighborhood communities, yet they often face significant social, economic, and cultural barriers that limit their full participation in society. Many women struggle with challenges such as limited access to education, financial dependency, and gender-based violence. Particularly in rural areas, inequalities are more pronounced due to traditional customs that marginalize women.

Social work organizations in Tanzania play a vital role in overcoming these barriers by empowering women through education, skill development, and economic opportunities. Below, we introduce some of the organizations that you can do an internship or volunteer with.

The organizations have qualified professionals who can supervise your internship. If you require an internship for academic credit, please provide your college's/university's requirements, and we will match you with an organization that can fulfil these requirements.

Empowering Women and Disadvantaged Minorities in the Kilimanjaro Region

This organization operates in three regions of Tanzania: Kilimanjaro, Arusha, and Singida, with its headquarters in Moshi. Guided by the vision of a society where all people enjoy equal rights and sustainable livelihoods, the NGO's mission focuses on enabling marginalized women, men, youth, and children to achieve financial security and well-being while contributing to a supportive society.

As an intern or volunteer with this organization, you will engage in community-oriented activities aimed at promoting skills and education to address societal challenges.

Tasks include conducting outreach activities to identify community needs, running training programs for women's groups, and mentoring individuals such as people with disabilities, children, and the elderly.

Volunteers and interns can also contribute to documenting success stories, developing strategies to address social issues, and providing psychosocial support to victims of gender-based violence.

For those interested in microfinance, there is the opportunity to learn about and participate in the Vicoba model. Activities include conducting financial literacy workshops and supporting local small businesses. These efforts aim to economically empower women in a sustainable way.

Empowering Maasai Women and Children

Another organization is based in Boma Ng’ombe and advocates for gender equality and the rights of women, girls, and children, particularly within the pastoral Maasai community. The foundation runs a preschool and primary school and leads community initiatives such as the "My Body Belongs to Me" campaign, which raises awareness and empowers Maasai girls to understand and assert their rights. The organization also works closely with Maasai women artisans, helping them improve their skills in beadwork and supporting them in marketing their handcrafted products.

Tasks for volunteers and interns include participating in outreach programs in Maasai villages focused on education, health, and gender equality. They also support Maasai women in designing and marketing their traditional beadwork to tourists, enabling the women to generate a sustainable income.

Additionally, participants teach English, math, cognitive skills, science, arts, and sports at a preschool and primary school.

Volunteers and interns live with host families in the small town of Boma Ng’ombe.

Human Rights Organization in Moshi

A human rights organization based in Moshi Town empowers disadvantaged women and marginalized groups by raising awareness about their rights, providing free legal advice, and advocating for economic and social development. It conducts campaigns to influence local leaders and builds partnerships with media, research institutions, and related organizations.

Volunteers and interns support the NGO by creating content for educational materials and social media, documenting and evaluating activities, and assisting with administrative and fundraising tasks.

Training Women in the Textile Industry

This non-profit organization has been operating in Moshi since 2005, providing a one-year course to train young women and single mothers in textile processing, enabling them to earn an income through their work. They are taught by two tailoring instructors, and the products they create are sold to fund the program.

Participants with knowledge of the textile or business sectors can contribute to this organization.

Host Families in Moshi

Staying with a host family gives you the opportunity to gain an in-depth look at Tanzanian culture and society. We cooperate with host families in the urban area of Moshi, whose living conditions are of medium and high standard. What this means exactly, we want to explain in the following.

The host families we collaborate with belong to Tanzania's upper middle class, and their homes meet standards that are well-suited for the majority of our participants in terms of construction quality, amenities, and furnishings. Typically, these houses are equipped with two tiled bathrooms—one for the parents and another shared by the children of the family and yourself. The availability of hot water for showers can vary. Western-style water toilets are typically provided in the house.

The host families provide meals that reflect typical Tanzanian cuisine. Breakfast might consist of toast with jam, egg omelettes, and tea. For dinner, expect dishes such as meat or fish with vegetables, served alongside rice, ugali, or chapati. Tea, boiled water, or homemade fruit juice is commonly offered. Vegetarian meals can be accommodated upon request.

In these households, refrigerators are usually present, and cooking is primarily done using gas. Domestic helpers are often part of the family structure, responsible for tasks like cooking, cleaning, and hand-washing laundry. Inside the living rooms, you'll find decorative curtains and doilies, as well as amenities like a stereo system, television, and an older laptop. As a common possession, the family typically owns a secondhand Japanese car. However, such items are often accumulated over many years due to financial constraints. The family's main priority is usually investing in their children's higher education, and the car is primarily utilized for absolutely essential journeys.

Host Families in Boma Ng'ombe

In Boma Ng’ombe, you will stay with a host family in a single room, including breakfast and dinner. If you are at the house during lunchtime, lunch will also be included. However, packed lunches for outside consumption cannot be provided.

From Boma Ng'ombe, you can easily and affordably travel by bus to Moshi and Arusha. In Moshi, you can participate in our cultural workshops and events, as well as meet our team and other program participants.

Swahili Lessons

Although Swahili knowledge is not a requirement for your participation, basic Swahili skills can make communication easier on-site. The language is relatively simple to learn. The lessons are offered as private instruction in Moshi Town by young Swahili teachers. You can decide the intensity of your lessons and book a certain number of hours (1 hour = 60 minutes) under "Extras." If you plan to take Swahili lessons alongside your internship or volunteering, we recommend a maximum of 10 hours per week.
