A private veterinary clinic in Moshi
Dr. Mnyoni’s private veterinary clinic is located in the center of Moshi Town. Dr. Mnyoni is an experienced veterinarian who employs two young fellow vets.
Around 50% of their work involves treating livestock on farms and in the fields. The main animals treated are cows, pigs, chickens, goats, donkeys, and poultry. The vets typically travel throughout the Kilimanjaro area every day from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.. You can accompany them and actively participate in their work. Animal diseases are diagnosed and treated directly on farms and pastures, and vaccinations and inseminations are also performed.
The remaining 50% of their work takes place at the clinic, where they treat domestic animals and pets (such as dogs and cats), perform minor surgeries, post-mortem diagnoses, castrations, and laboratory examinations, as well as selling medicines. The clinic also has a small shop for animal supplies.
In case of animal diseases, farmers in the region typically seek the vets’ help immediately; traditional medicine no longer plays a major role. Even the Maasai in remote areas get their cattle vaccinated. African wildlife is not treated by the vets, as this falls under the responsibility of National Park authorities.
Common poultry diseases in the area include fowl typhoid, Newcastle disease, coccidiosis, salmonellosis, Gumboro disease, fowl pox, avitaminosis, mineral deficiencies, worm infestations, duck viral hepatitis, Marek’s disease, avian leucosis (Big Liver Disease), aspergillosis, salmonella muralam, and colibacillosis. For cattle, common issues include heartwater disease, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, trypanosomiasis, East Coast fever (ECF), dystocia, anthrax, milk fever, contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP), metritis, retained placenta, and artificial insemination. For swine, common diseases include swine erysipelas (Diamond Skin Disease), swine fever, pasteurellosis, erysipelas, mange, and dystocia. Dogs can suffer from parvovirus, canine distemper, leptospirosis, rabies, worm infestations, fungal infections, mange, fleas, and giardiasis. Cats may experience worm infections, feline rhinotracheitis, mange, fleas, fungal infections, and giardiasis. Other complications that can arise in all animals include dehydration, choking, and poisoning.
While the young vets typically handle farm work, Dr. Mnyoni spends more time at the clinic, where he also sells animal food, accessories, and medications.
