Mental Health Support in Moshi Town

This non-profit NGO operates a psychotherapy center in Moshi Town, providing treatment and counseling for mental health issues. Additionally, they conduct numerous outreach programs to support affected individuals and their family members, and to disseminate mental health knowledge to schools, and local communities.

Activities at the center include participation in self-help groups for people with addiction disorders, therapeutic sessions for addicts, and occupational therapy. Outreach programs focus on home visits to address family and addiction-related challenges, family therapy sessions that involve relatives in the therapeutic process, and visits to secondary schools, villages, churches, and mosques to promote mental health awareness.

About the Psychotherapy Aid Organization

Founded in 2016 as a response to school programs and counseling offerings in mainland Tanzania’s addiction clinics, this organization has since developed innovative, needs-based services. As part of a three-year program focusing on youth empowerment, drug prevention, and counseling, the organization has created interventions based on current research and best practices, targeting children, adolescents, parents, and teachers, as well as individuals struggling with addiction.

  • Family Counseling: Support for families in conflict resolution, communication improvement, and overcoming family issues.

Drug and Alcohol Dependency Treatment:

  • Evaluation and Diagnosis: Comprehensive assessment of addiction severity and its effects.
  • Detox Programs: Medically supervised programs for treating withdrawal symptoms.
  • Therapeutic Interventions: Individual and group therapy sessions to address addiction behaviors and triggers.
  • Rehabilitation Plans: Creation of personalized recovery plans, including counseling, self-help groups, and lifestyle changes.

Substance Abuse Awareness:

  • Workshops and Seminars: Events on the dangers of addiction, prevention measures, and available support services.
  • Awareness Campaigns: Using social media, radio, and television to spread information about drug and alcohol misuse risks.
  • School Programs: Implementation of age-appropriate educational programs on the consequences of addictive behavior.

Rehabilitation Facilities:

  • Residential Options: Safe, structured accommodations for individuals in recovery.
  • Therapeutic Activities: Activities like art therapy, sports, and holistic wellness practices to support recovery.
  • Aftercare: Programs to prevent relapse and support long-term stabilization after rehabilitation.

Your Activities as an Intern

Internships are available for students of social work, psychology, and occupational therapy. Interns generally work from Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM at the addiction clinic (Sober House), assisting the team. Typical sessions include participating in Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meetings, therapeutic sessions for addicts, and engaging in activities such as gardening and animal care to promote self-confidence and daily life skills. Interns also take part in outreach programs, occurring approximately three times per month.

Booking Process

We first need to check the availability of this internship with the host organization. For this, please send us your CV/resume in English by email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or via WhatsApp to +81-90-4702-1361, and let us know your approximate preferred time period. This is completely free of charge for you and without any obligation.

If you need to do a mandatory internship for school/university credit, you can send us the requirements (e.g. tasks, type of supervision, number of hours). We will then check whether the internship meets these requirements.

We can usually confirm your internship within a few days. In the rare case that your internship is not available, we can often suggest a similar alternative internship placement.

After our confirmation, you secure your place by paying a deposit of 100 EUR/USD. The remaining balance is due one month before the program start.

You can also decide on your accommodation and any extras at a later stage.

Contribution to the Placement Organization

Please note that in addition to the program fees paid to World Unite!, there is also a contribution for internship supervision that must be paid directly to your placement organization. You can find details on this page under “Program Details” → “Program Prices.”

Host Families in Moshi

Staying with a host family gives you the opportunity to gain an in-depth look at Tanzanian culture and society. We cooperate with host families in the urban area of Moshi, whose living conditions are of medium and high standard. What this means exactly, we want to explain in the following.

The host families we collaborate with belong to Tanzania's upper middle class, and their homes meet standards that are well-suited for the majority of our participants in terms of construction quality, amenities, and furnishings. Typically, these houses are equipped with two tiled bathrooms—one for the parents and another shared by the children of the family and yourself. The availability of hot water for showers can vary. Western-style water toilets are typically provided in the house.

The host families provide meals that reflect typical Tanzanian cuisine. Breakfast might consist of toast with jam, egg omelettes, and tea. For dinner, expect dishes such as meat or fish with vegetables, served alongside rice, ugali, or chapati. Tea, boiled water, or homemade fruit juice is commonly offered. Vegetarian meals can be accommodated upon request.

In these households, refrigerators are usually present, and cooking is primarily done using gas. Domestic helpers are often part of the family structure, responsible for tasks like cooking, cleaning, and hand-washing laundry. Inside the living rooms, you'll find decorative curtains and doilies, as well as amenities like a stereo system, television, and an older laptop. As a common possession, the family typically owns a secondhand Japanese car. However, such items are often accumulated over many years due to financial constraints. The family's main priority is usually investing in their children's higher education, and the car is primarily utilized for absolutely essential journeys.
