Volunteering or Internship

Mount Meru Regional Hospital in the city centre of Arusha is a large public hospital where we can arrange elective placements for medical students, internships for students of nursing, physiotherapy and midwifery, and volunteer placements for healthcare professionals.
Description

Mount Meru Regional Hospital

Mount Meru Regional Hospital, located in the city center of Arusha, is the main public hospital for the Mount Meru, Arusha, and Lake Manyara regions. All smaller district hospitals and many private hospitals refer patients to this large hospital.

The hospital has a capacity of 450 beds. It offers the following departments: General Medicine, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Maternity Ward (pre- and postnatal care, family planning), Pediatrics, Ophthalmology, Dentistry, Radiology, Pathology, Psychiatry, Anesthesiology, Physiotherapy, Laboratory, Intensive Care Unit, HIV Care and Treatment (CTC), and a hospital pharmacy.

It's not uncommon for the hospital to handle 30 births per day. There are 3 operating theaters, including for eye surgery and obstetric surgery.

The hospital has specialists in general medicine, internal medicine, surgery, gynecology, clinical psychology, public health, nursing, and obstetrics. In total, the hospital employs 430 staff members. The hospital is located directly opposite the Arusha International Conference Centre.

Your Hospital Placement

Students of medicine, nursing, and midwifery can undertake an elective placement or internship, either in a specific desired department or by rotating through multiple departments. You will be assigned a supervisor who will decide which examinations and treatments you are allowed to perform under their supervision. These may include administering medication, wound care, measuring vital signs, giving vaccinations, and other assistant duties.

Internships are also possible for physiotherapy students and midwifery trainees.

Volunteer assignments can be arranged for professionals in the fields of medicine, nursing, midwifery, and physiotherapy.

Working hours are usually Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 15:30 with a one-hour break. If desired, you can also work on Saturdays and Sundays and take night shifts.

Booking Process

You can book your elective or internship directly online on this website. A lead time of approximately 4 weeks is required. If you can book earlier, that’s even better!

After booking, you can send us the documents required by the hospitals:

  • Your CV/resume in English
  • A recommendation letter from your university in English
  • A copy of your enrollment certificate
  • A copy of your passport (photo page)
  • A copy of your student ID

Please note that not all desired departments are available at all times. If you need a specific department, please inquire with us in advance.

FAQs

How is internship supervision provided?

As an intern, you will be assigned a specialist from the hospital who will decide which examinations and treatments you are allowed to perform under their supervision. These may include administering medication, wound care, measuring vital signs, giving vaccinations, and other assistant duties. This person will provide you with professional feedback.

Interns and volunteers with professional qualifications and work experience also cannot practice independently, as this requires a permit from the Tanzanian health authority. Obtaining this permit is a lengthy process, worthwhile only for longer assignments of at least one year. Even if you have professional qualifications, you will be supervised by a licensed professional in Tanzania who will be responsible for you and will decide what you can do independently.

What should I bring?

Participants should bring their own work clothes (white, green, or blue scrub suits and closed shoes of any color). It is also advisable to bring your own hand sanitizer and stethoscope. Those working in the operating room should bring green or blue clothing, face masks, and hair covers.
