Internship at a Law Firm in Tanzania

Tanzania applies a mixed legal system, which incorporates elements of English common law, customary law, and Islamic law. This system is rooted in the country’s colonial history, with English common law being predominant in the formal legal system, particularly in areas such as contract and criminal law. Customary law governs matters like land tenure, inheritance, and marriage in rural areas, while Islamic law applies to personal matters like marriage, divorce, and inheritance for the Muslim community. The judiciary, comprising primary courts, district courts, the High Court, and the Court of Appeal, ensures the enforcement of these laws, within a constitutional framework that guarantees the separation of powers and fundamental rights.

Law students and graduates can undertake an internship or volunteer placement at the law firm located in Boma Ng’ombe. Boma Ng’ombe is a rapidly growing settlement near Kilimanjaro International Airport, approximately halfway between Arusha and Moshi.

The law firm represents clients in various legal fields, with a focus on anti-corruption, legal violations, and criminal defense.

The four lawyers in the firm represent clients across Tanzania and attend court almost daily. Court sessions take place at the courts in Moshi, Arusha, Dar es Salaam, and Mwanza. Participants have the opportunity to accompany the lawyers to court in Moshi and Arusha, both of which are accessible within a 45-minute drive. The language of the courts in Tanzania is English.

Generally, your internship will run from Monday to Friday, from 8 AM to 5 PM. Office work, such as preparing for court sessions and written communication, is done from 8 AM to 2 PM, while the remaining time is usually spent on client meetings and court attendance. Interns have the opportunity to gain direct insight into Tanzania's legal system by attending court hearings. You can also travel to the courts with the lawyers by car.

Tasks During your Internship:

  • Preparing legal documents
  • Conducting interviews, investigations, etc.
  • Preparing court documents
  • Attending court hearings, including legal client consultations
