Description

Volunteering and Internships in Kindergartens in Moshi/Tanzania

You can participate in this program both for the purpose of volunteering, and doing it as an internship. The organizations introduced below have qualified professionals who can supervise internships. If you need an internship that must be credited toward your studies, please let us know your schools/university’s requirements and we will identify the available organizations that meet those requirements.

Below, we introduce various organizations. You will carry out your volunteer placement or internship with one of these organizations. You are welcome to let us know your preferences regarding the host organization without obligation, and we will check availability. We can confirm your host organization even before you make a binding booking.

Nursery School and Day Care Center in Pasua

About 25-30 children aged 3-5 from the neighborhood attend the center in the Pasua district, where the building and facilities are comparatively simple. Many of the children come from needy or socially disadvantaged families who cannot afford to send their children to a public or private kindergarten; some of the children are semi-orphans.

In the mornings, simple lessons are usually held, such as learning letters and numbers, singing, playing, dancing, clapping and circle games, storytelling, and basic English.

There are two caregivers at the center. The teacher, Hadija, speaks basic English. Another caregiver, Amina, supports Hadija in teaching.

Tasks for Volunteers/Interns:

  • Supporting the teachers in teaching, e.g., basic English, numbers, ABC. After a learning and orientation phase, you can also conduct your own lessons.
  • Singing, clapping, circle games, sports activities, or dancing.
  • Helping with cooking, washing up, and tidying the center.

  • The children receive two meals at the center, usually porridge and a small lunch. The center is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

Early Childhood Education and Care Center in Soweto

The early childhood education and care center is located in the Soweto district, near St. Joseph Hospital, and cares for 35 children. It is supported by a small, dedicated team of three teachers and a cook.

    Tasks for Volunteers/Interns:

  • Supporting the children in learning basic skills through creative and exciting activities.
  • Ensuring the well-being of the children with attentive and empathetic care.
  • Engaging in playful and educational activities.
  • Helping to feed the little ones and ensuring they receive good nutrition.

  • Preschool-aged children are at the center from 8 a.m. until after lunch. If you are interested, you can also stay in the center until 5 p.m., when it is visited by primary school children who receive afternoon care.

    Kindergarten at the Community Center

Since 2023, the kindergarten has been part of providing early learning experiences to children aged 2 to 5 years. Under the leadership of dedicated teachers Olivari and Hussein, the kindergarten teaches around 35 children basic skills in reading, writing, and counting—playfully through songs and games in a colorful environment surrounded by green trees and banana plants.

Most of the children come from disadvantaged families, for whom access to early childhood education is often challenging, whether due to financial barriers or the lack of time and education of the parents. The Good Hope Kindergarten offers this education free of charge and strives to provide a solid foundation for successful school and personal development.

    Tasks for Volunteers/Interns:

  • Supporting the children in playful learning of reading, writing, and counting.
  • Promoting learning and social interaction through creative games and activities.
  • Creating a caring and inclusive environment for the children.
  • Kindergartens of the Lutheran Church

The Lutheran Church operates four kindergartens in the Pasua area of Moshi Town. Each kindergarten is attended daily by between 200-400 children. The children are aged 3-7 years. Typically, there are two shifts: the youngest children (3-4 years) attend from 7-11 a.m., and the older children (6-7 years) attend from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. While the younger children play, the older ones already learn reading, writing, basic arithmetic, and receive lessons in "behavior" and "hygiene," which are based on Montessori pedagogy. However, knowledge of this pedagogy is not required for interns/volunteers.

Even during the official school holidays (December and July), there are always children in the kindergartens, for example, preparing children under 3 who will be admitted to kindergarten at the next start date. Thus, activities are possible throughout the year.

Due to the large number of children, the kindergartens have too few staff and therefore need volunteers. Currently, there is about one teacher/caregiver for every 25 children.

    Kindergarten and Afternoon Care

The center includes a kindergarten that is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. for children aged 3-6 years. Around 30 children attend the kindergarten.

    Tasks for Volunteers/Interns:

  • Supporting teachers in teaching, e.g., basic English, numbers, ABC. After a learning and orientation phase, you can also conduct your own lessons.
  • Singing, clapping, circle games, music, art, etc.
  • Sports activities, e.g., dancing, gymnastics, etc.

  • In the afternoon, there is homework support and tutoring for elementary school children in mathematics, English, geography, computer applications, and art. This is carried out by unpaid local volunteer teachers, but foreign volunteers are also welcome to assist. Teenage students, young adults, and mothers can take advantage of additional educational offerings such as computer courses, tailoring classes, and art lessons, where you can also get involved.

    Kindergarten in Shirimatunda

Located in the Shirimatunda neighborhood, this daycare center provides care and education for 38 children aged 2.5 to 5 years. The center is staffed by three teachers, one caretaker, and one cook, creating a safe and nurturing environment that fosters early childhood development.

    Tasks for Volunteers/Interns:

  • Assist in planning and leading educational and recreational activities such as arts and crafts, reading sessions, singing, dancing, and outdoor play.
  • Help children learn letters, the alphabet, and writing skills.
  • Assist with feeding, changing diapers, and supervising nap time.
  • Help with cleaning up after meals, organizing toys and materials, and general tidying.
  • Support staff with various tasks to ensure the smooth daily operation of the center.
  • Daycare and Preschool at a Home for Vulnerable Children

The mission of this center is to support orphans and vulnerable children by providing access to basic needs such as education, healthcare, shelter, food, and clothing. The center serves a total of 70 children, including 30 orphans aged 2 to 16 years. While the older children attend public school, the 2-5 years old are at the center during the daytime.

The staff consists of five teachers, one social worker, two matrons, and one patron.

    Host Families in Moshi

Staying with a host family gives you the opportunity to gain an in-depth look at Tanzanian culture and society. We cooperate with host families in the urban area of Moshi, whose living conditions are of medium and high standard. What this means exactly, we want to explain in the following.

The host families we collaborate with belong to Tanzania's upper middle class, and their homes meet standards that are well-suited for the majority of our participants in terms of construction quality, amenities, and furnishings. Typically, these houses are equipped with two tiled bathrooms—one for the parents and another shared by the children of the family and yourself. The availability of hot water for showers can vary. Western-style water toilets are typically provided in the house.

The host families provide meals that reflect typical Tanzanian cuisine. Breakfast might consist of toast with jam, egg omelettes, and tea. For dinner, expect dishes such as meat or fish with vegetables, served alongside rice, ugali, or chapati. Tea, boiled water, or homemade fruit juice is commonly offered. Vegetarian meals can be accommodated upon request.

In these households, refrigerators are usually present, and cooking is primarily done using gas. Domestic helpers are often part of the family structure, responsible for tasks like cooking, cleaning, and hand-washing laundry. Inside the living rooms, you'll find decorative curtains and doilies, as well as amenities like a stereo system, television, and an older laptop. As a common possession, the family typically owns a secondhand Japanese car. However, such items are often accumulated over many years due to financial constraints. The family's main priority is usually investing in their children's higher education, and the car is primarily utilized for absolutely essential journeys.

    Extras

    Extras Swahili

    Swahili Lessons

Although Swahili knowledge is not a requirement for your participation, basic Swahili skills can make communication easier on-site. The language is relatively simple to learn. The lessons are offered as private instruction in Moshi Town by young Swahili teachers. You can decide the intensity of your lessons and book a certain number of hours (1 hour = 60 minutes) under "Extras." If you plan to take Swahili lessons alongside your internship or volunteering, we recommend a maximum of 10 hours per week.
