Internship with Human Rights Organizations in Tanzania
In many African societies, women, children, people with disabilities, and other minorities are often denied essential rights. They also face discrimination in areas such as labor law, family law, criminal law, and business law. However, NGOs in Tanzania work to educate these groups about their rights, provide free legal aid, and represent them in out-of-court settlements. They also assist in poverty alleviation and socio-economic empowerment. Advocacy campaigns aim to influence society positively, including district councils and community boards. Partnerships with media, research institutions, and other relevant organizations are also formed, and studies are regularly conducted to assess women’s inclusion in societal and political spheres.
Activities of the Organizations
Legal Assistance
Organizations provide daily legal aid to individuals seeking advice on various issues, including land disputes, inheritance law, marriage, child support, labor matters, and gender-based violence. They collaborate with paralegals (professionals with foundational legal knowledge) who work closely with village and community executives, the police, gender desks, social services, courts, and religious institutions.
Legal Awareness
Workshops and open dialogues are conducted in primary and secondary schools to involve teachers and students in discussions on domestic violence, child rights, and human rights. This raises awareness of the need to protect children, women, people with disabilities, and other marginalized groups. Students and teachers act as ambassadors, sharing their knowledge within their communities.
Additional measures include community workshops involving local leaders and community groups, the creation of educational materials in local languages such as Swahili and Chagga, and the use of media platforms like radio, television, and social media. Organizations also regularly organize seminars and legal training on human rights and legal frameworks.
Shelter for Victims of Violence
One organization provides shelter and accommodation for women and female teenagers who are victims of gender-based violence, including genital mutilation, sexual abuse, and other forms of violence.
Village Community Banks (VICOBAs)
VICOBAs are savings groups where members support each other. NGOs provide professional training and advisory services, equipping members with entrepreneurial skills and access to microloans and insurance. This helps improve the standard of living for members and their families through small-scale entrepreneurship.
