About the Moshi Institute of Technology
MIT is operated by a nonprofit organization with the mission of enhancing the digital skills of children, youth, and young professionals to improve their opportunities in the job market.
In the mornings, primary school classes (ages 7–12) and secondary school classes (ages 14–20) from schools partnered with the institute visit the center. The children receive a general introduction to using computers, the internet, and services like email.
In the afternoons, young people and early-career professionals, mostly from low- and middle-income backgrounds, come to the center to improve their IT skills. The institute offers them a variety of courses, training programs, and seminars that are both affordable and accessible. These courses include:
Web Design: Covers the basics of web design and development, including HTML, CSS, PHP, SQL databases, and CMS frameworks. Participants learn to create attractive and functional websites.
Databases: Introduces the fundamentals of database systems, modeling, design, and management, as well as implementation techniques.
Graphic Design: Teaches basic and advanced techniques using popular graphic design software, covering document handling, color selection, typography, and image retouching.
Networking: Offers hands-on training in network fundamentals, including TCP/IP configuration. This course is aligned with certifications like Microsoft MCSA and can be paired with hardware specialization.
Secretarial Skills: Focuses on essential IT skills for office use, including text processing and administrative software.
Accounting: A three-month course teaching basic accounting theories and application use, including tax management and transaction entries.
Electronics: Introduces electronics, circuit analysis, analog and digital systems, and components like diodes, resistors, and logic gates.
Computer Technology: Prepares participants for roles in maintenance, networking, security, and installation. Topics include hardware basics, operating systems, and server components.
Hardware Specialization: A practical program featuring A+ PC Support and A+ Operating System Technologies modules. Participants learn to upgrade, repair, and optimize computers.
In addition to computer courses, MIT offers English language classes to help participants improve their communication skills.
MIT’s main center in Moshi Town has broadband internet access and approximately 40 donated desktop computers. It also has a growing number of donated laptops, many of which were donated by our volunteers via our cooperation with Labdoo, equipped with Ubuntu Linux and educational software for children and youth.
The institute also conducts outreach programs in education and IT in the rural villages of the Njia Panda region, north of Moshi.
Your Role as a Volunteer
Your role at MIT will be tailored in collaboration with the institute. You can contribute to any of the areas mentioned, teaching both schoolchildren in the mornings and young adults in the afternoons.
You can also introduce unique content for workshops. Past volunteers have for instance provided workshops on topics such as basic robotics with Raspberry Pi (that they brought), C++ programming, or video/audio editing. If you wish to lead a specialized workshop, it is recommended to apply at least two months in advance to allow time for participant recruitment.
