Supporting and Empowering Children, Youth, and Women in Nicaragua
Domestic violence, sexual abuse, and child labor are pervasive issues in Nicaragua, driven by a combination of poverty, cultural norms, and systemic weaknesses. Around 30% of women aged 15-49 report having experienced physical or sexual violence from an intimate partner, according to UN Women. Cultural acceptance of gender-based violence and machismo perpetuates these abuses, while economic instability forces many families to rely on child labor to survive, with nearly 40% of children aged 5-14 involved in work, according to UNICEF. Weak law enforcement and limited access to education and social services further exacerbate these issues, leaving victims with few avenues for support or escape.
The non-profit organization, active since 1989, is dedicated to promoting human rights, with a special focus on children, youth, and women. Its main activities include providing psychological, social, and legal support to individuals affected by gender-based violence, sexual abuse, and commercial sexual exploitation. The organization also works to disengage children from child labor and provides comprehensive support for women in prostitution. Additionally, it conducts educational programs to prevent gender-based violence and sexual exploitation, involving families and community leaders to create a protective environment for vulnerable groups.
The organization employs a team of 21 professionals working in social work, psychology, law, and awareness-raising. The team is committed to justice, peaceful coexistence, fostering a compassionate and supportive society, human rights, gender equality, and promoting personal development opportunities.
