Clinical electives and internships for healthcare students, as well as volunteer opportunities for professionals in the medical, nursing, and medical technology fields, are available at the private hospital AMOCSA in León.

Description

Clinical Electives, Healthcare Internships and Volunteering at the Private Hospital AMOCSA

AMOCSA ("Asistencia Médica de Occidente S.A.") is the private hospital that likely offers the highest medical standards in León. In addition to León, there are two other locations for larger clinics and several smaller outpatient facilities in western Nicaragua. The AMOCSA Hospitals cater to patients who can afford better care than the healthcare services offered in public hospitals.

A new building houses the emergency department with a laboratory and three intensive care units, as well as an ambulance service. Another new building provides wards with 61 beds and facilities for pediatrics, neonatal ward, surgery, internal medicine, gynecology/obstetrics, orthopedics, and orthopedics, along with a pharmacy.

The León facility employs 170 staff members. The outpatient clinic is particularly busy in the afternoons, as private health insurance companies require the hospital to ensure that no patient waits longer than two hours.

AMOCSA has contracts with Nicaragua’s social security system, allowing employees of companies that insure their staff and their family members through social security to receive treatment at AMOCSA when ill. This covers around 60,000 people. Additionally, AMOCSA specializes in occupational health, conducting health checks for new employees, periodic follow-ups, and specialized tests such as vision and hearing tests required for certain jobs. They also assess workplace conditions that may impact health, such as noise levels.

We can arrange clinical electives and internships in all departments of AMOCSA.

Volunteers in the fields of nursing, medicine, and medical technology are always in demand. Solid Spanish skills are expected.

The hospital operates in three shifts: Shift 1: 7:00 AM to 2:00 PM; Shift 2: 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM; Shift 3: 9:00 PM to 7:00 AM.

We also recommend comparing airfares to popular destinations in the Caribbean and southern USA (e.g. Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Las Vegas, Panamá, Santo Domingo, Cancún), from where you can book a flight to Managua separately.

It is possible to extend for an additional 90 days, with each subsequent month (up to six months) costing $20 per month.

Accommodation Options

Host Family & Shared Accommodation

The accommodation we arrange is with families or individuals who rent out rooms in their houses. The houses are typically large historic buildings in Colonial style, allowing the owners to rent out 2-5 rooms. Therefore, it is likely that there will be other non-family members staying there. In the university city of León, this type of accommodation is primarily aimed at Nicaraguan students but is also available for foreign participants in our programs.

This type of accommodation offers a combination of family and flat-share life. Depending on the family and your preferences, you can choose to live in closer relation with the family or more independently.

The rooms are usually furnished with a bed, a table and chair, and storage space for clothes. Some houses have private bathrooms for the rooms, while others have shared bathrooms with the homeowners or other tenants. You will be provided with your own key. Bed linen is provided, and the room is cleaned weekly. Overnight guests are not permitted in the rooms. Wifi internet is available and the kitchen can be used. If you prefer, you can book breakfast, lunch, and dinner with the family at a small additional cost.

Extras

As an extra, you can book Spanisch language lessons, which you can take during your internship. The lessons are conducted on a one-to-one basis and every level of Spanish, from beginner to advanced, is possible. The language instructors are from Nicaragua and have several years of experience teaching Spanish as a foreign language.
