Integrative Education Center
The Integrative Education Center in León operates as a kindergarten in the morning for about 50 children aged 2–5, attending from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM. In the afternoon, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, around 40 older children and adolescents visit the center for homework help and recreational activities such as dance, music, drawing, painting, recorder lessons, poetry, guitar lessons, soccer, and unicycling. The center provides a daily lunch, which the project’s youth prepare on a rotating basis.
Most of the children and adolescents come from difficult family circumstances. Some live with grandparents or relatives because their parents have left the region or country in search of work. Others have parents who are unemployed or in unstable jobs. Many mothers are single parents who became pregnant as teenagers. Along with learning, the center gives children the chance to have fun, play, and enjoy or reclaim their childhood.
Children and youth also have the possibility to stay at the Center temporarily. The center is officially recognized by the Ministry of Families as part of the National Committee for Substitute Housing-León, allowing it to provide temporary housing for children and adolescents when needed.
Five local teachers, some working voluntarily, are involved in this project, along with a small group of parents and neighbors who support its activities.
Volunteer Activities at the Integrative Education Center:
- Assisting children with preschool education, including writing, reading, and math skills
- Supporting homework and tutoring sessions
- Organizing recreational activities for children and adolescents (e.g., dance, sports, yoga, games, theater, etc.)
- Teaching English
- Helping with tasks such as meal preparation and cleanup
