Union de l'action féminine (UAFT)
At the center of the UAF ("Union de l’action féminine") in Tangier, Morocco, volunteers and interns can contribute to educational activities for women and marginachildren, as well as support the organization with administrative tasks.
Implementation of Women's Rights in Morocco
The "Union de l’action féminine" (UAF) was founded in 1983 in line with the "8th of March" movement (International Women's Day), which advocates for the implementation of women's rights in Morocco.
The organization successfully initiated a nationwide debate on women's rights and has been recognized for over 20 years as the leading non-governmental organization in Morocco advocating for women's rights. The organization operates centers for women in several cities across Morocco.
The "Union de l’action féminine" works towards eliminating all forms of discrimination against women in political, legal, economic, social, and cultural spheres. It fights against domestic and gender-based violence and promotes women's access to decision-making positions in all fields, ensuring they can exercise their full citizenship rights.
The organization's activities include motivational and awareness campaigns against the marginalization of women, literacy programs, education in health, citizenship, women's rights, and environmental protection, support for victims of violence on legal, psychological, medical, and social levels, as well as vocational training and support for entrepreneurship.
Volunteers and interns contribute to the UAF center in Tangier. As a volunteer or intern you can teach school children foreign languages (Spanish and French for elementary school children, English for teenagers) and teach women reading and writing. The center also has a small children's book library, a room with sewing machines, and a computer room. You can also teach tailoring and computer skills. If you have additional ideas for workshops or activities, please feel free to share them with us, and we can discuss your suggestions with UAF. Additionally, you can support the organization with various administrative and organizational tasks in the office.
DARNA
DARNA supports three groups of people in Tangier: 1) Women from the city of Tangier as well as women from rural areas around Tangier who have no income of their own. 2) Girls from rural areas around Tangier who have little access to education, and 3) Youth from low-income backgrounds who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.
DARNA operates 6 centers in Tangier, which are visited daily by approximately 120 women and 160 children and adolescents aged 8 to 19. These centers provide educational programs as well as vocational training opportunities.
Both women and children and adolescents are taught reading and writing in Arabic and French.
For women, there are courses in financial independence as well as vocational training opportunities such as weaving, sewing, embroidery, painting, baking, and cooking/catering. The products of the women are sold in a souvenir shop and in a restaurant operated by DARNA, which also employ women and youth. The profits from the souvenir shop and restaurant are the main source of funding for the organization.
Vocational training opportunities for youth in Tangier include carpentry, welding, and baking.
DARNA also operates an educational farm near Cape Spartel, which grows fruits and vegetables, keeps livestock, and produces honey and cheese. At the farm, youth, who mostly come from a social environment characterized by drugs, begging, theft, or prostitution, can acquire agricultural knowledge. The farm products are also sold to generate income for the organization.
In Kasbah of Tangier, DARNA also operates a center for street children. Children can use a library with books and magazines, musical instruments, as well as various machines and materials for upcycling, woodworking, and paper and cardboard crafts. Children can also come to the center after school to do their homework.
As a volunteer at DARNA, you can:
- Teach foreign languages to children, adolescents, and women (particularly interested in French, English, and Spanish)
- Work at the center for street children of DARNA, such as in the library
- Assist in the general administration of DARNA
- Supervise children while their mothers participate in vocational training activities
- Independently conduct workshops for children, adolescents, and women that are thematically related to the organization's activities
At DARNA, it is important that you show initiative.
