You can let us know your preferences about which hospital you would like to do your internship at.
Description

Private Hospital Clinique Assalam

Clinique Assalam is the highest standard private hospital in the city center of Tangier. The hospital was founded in 2007 by a team of 6 Moroccan doctors, all of whom studied in Belgium and wanted to establish a medical facility of European standards in Tangier: Dr. Takkal and Dr. Shergi, who are surgeons, Dr. Manur and Dr. Akalay, who are traumatologists, cardiologist Dr. Zaidi, and anesthetist Dr. Ktari, offering permanent services in their respective specialties in the hospital. In addition, further full-time physicians are employed who provide services in the fields of neurosurgery, urology, ENT, pediatrics, gynecology, general medicine, and emergency care. In addition to doctors, the hospital also has nursing staff.

Clinique Assalam has 3 surgery theaters. About 400 children are born in the hospital annually. The hospital has a total of 30 beds for inpatients on three floors, all of them being single or double rooms. There is also a meal service for patients.

Elective and healthcare internship students are supervised by the hospital's doctors. The hospital is not affiliated with a university teaching hospital, but Moroccan students also regularly intern at the hospital.

French language skills are of advantage but not a requirement. Elective and internship students are in direct contact and interaction with hospital staff and patients. Most doctors speak English; all speak French and some speak Spanish. Most nursing staff speak French but not English, and some speak Spanish. The language skills of the patients correspond to Moroccan society (mother tongue Darija/Arabic, people with better education speak French, and in Tangier, many also speak Spanish; English skills are not widespread).

Interns are typically at the hospital from 9 am to 12 pm and from 2 pm to 6 pm, but can also start earlier. The hospital is open 365 days a year, and internships are possible all year round.

The following conditions of the hospital apply:

• Participants must be able to provide health insurance that is valid for internships abroad.
• Ward and working hours are decided by the hospital.
• It is forbidden to take photos inside the hospital and of patients. Devices capable of taking photos (including mobile phones, tablet PCs, etc.) must not be carried in the hospital but must be handed in at the reception.
• Students must bring and wear nursing pants, scrubs, and closed medical shoes. Special surgical clothing is provided. Clothing is washed at the hospital.

Private Hospital Clinique du Detroit

Clinique du Detroit is a private hospital of the highest standards near the airport of Tangier (about 25 minutes by bus from the city center).

The hospital offers services in the fields of internal medicine, diabetology, gastroenterology, nephrology, infectiology, cardiology, rheumatology, pediatrics, pneumology, surgery, radiology and 24-hour emergency department. The hospital also has a surgery area with 4 surgery theaters that are very well equipped, covering a wide range of surgical specialties.

Clinique du Detroit has around 40 beds for inpatients. The air-conditioned patient rooms are of high-quality with their own bathroom, flat-screen TVs, and internet connection.

At Clinique du Detroit, clinical electives, nursing internships, and other healthcare internships can be carried out. The minimum duration is 4 weeks. To interact with staff and patients, basic knowledge of French is of advantage. For those who do not yet have any knowledge of French, we recommend learning medical basics in advance.

You observe and support the staff in their daily work. After an orientation phase, depending on prior knowledge, you can also perform minor treatments and activities under the supervision of attending physicians or nurses, such as administering medication, wound care, vital sign measurements, vaccinations, or other assistant activities. It is possible to gain insights into various departments and to rotate.

You should bring your own work clothes (scrubs in white, green, or blue and closed shoes in any color). It is also advisable to bring your own hand disinfectant and a stethoscope. If you intern in the surgery theater, please bring green or blue surgical clothing, face masks, and surgical caps.

There is a free shuttle bus for staff and patients that runs several times a day between the city center and the hospital. The Clinique du Detroit can also be reached cost-effectively by city bus without changing buses.

Dental Clinic by Dr. Nabil Friekh

The dental clinic is directed by Dr. Nabil Friekh, who studied dental surgery and stomatology in Poland. His wife, who is an orthodontist, also works in the clinic. The clinic is equipped with modern facilities for all dental examinations and procedures, offering dental check-ups, general dental treatments, maxillofacial surgery, implantology, and dental prosthetics. Both children and adults are treated. The clinic is open on Mondays and Thursdays from 9 am to 5 pm, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm and from 3 pm to 7 pm, and Saturdays from 9 am to 1 pm. Internships are possible in all mentioned fields.

The internship is aimed at medical students, nursing students, as well as students in related fields. Interns observe and assist in consultations and treatments.

The doctor couple speaks French, Arabic, and Polish as well as basic English. The nursing staff speaks some French and Spanish. As an intern you should bring your own work clothes (shirt/blouse, pants, and shoes).

Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Clinic

The internship takes place in one of the largest and most renowned physiotherapy and rehabilitation clinics in Tangier, run by Dr. Sekkat. Dr. Sekkat studied at various universities in France and Belgium and holds a university degree in physiotherapy as well as diplomas in osteopathy, cardiac rehabilitation, and musculoskeletal ultrasound applications. He is both a pioneer in terms of expertise and technology in Morocco and has also been running his own private physiotherapy school since 2015.

Dr. Sekkat's clinic includes:

• A physiotherapy treatment room
• Examination room with electromyography (EMG) and ultrasound
• Electrotherapy and massage room
• Occupational therapy and orthopedic exercise room
• Functional rehabilitation exercise room

Typical conditions treated in the practice include hemiplegia, paraplegia, lumbago, back pain, shoulder pain, knee pain, osteoarthritis, hip pain, fibromyalgia, and other degenerative conditions. In the case of patients with physical disabilities, the team often conducts home visits and brings along the necessary equipment. As an intern, you can join these visits. The clinic also treats and advises patients with weight problems.

Internships are possible in the fields of physiotherapy, occupational therapy, osteopathy, nutritional counseling, and speech therapy. Interns are supervised directly by Dr. Sekkat.

Interns should be students of medicine, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, sports science, nutrition science, osteopathy, or related fields and be able to communicate in French.

The clinic is open six days a week.

The maximum duration for this internship is 2 months. If Dr. Sekkas agrees, this can be extended locally.

Who can join

You must be enrolled in a relevant course of study or training at the time of the internship or have already completed it.

Program start

The program start is possible all year round; the exact start date must be confirmed by the hospital.

Getting there

You book a flight to Tangier/Tangier (TNG), where various airlines, such as Ryanair, Easyjet, Eurowings, Iberia, Vueling, Air Cairo, Brussels Airlines and others, fly.

Our recommendation: If you are travelling from Europe, also search for departure nearby airports in European neighboring countries. Often, the combination of train and flight tickets is the most cost-effective option. You can also fly to Casablanca or Fes, from where you can take a bus or train to Tangier. If you want to explore Andalusia, you can also fly to Malaga, Seville, or Jerez, take a bus to Algeciras from there, and then cross to Tangier by ferry. We can provide details on all these travel options.

If you're coming from another continent, you might want to consider booking a flight to one of the major European airports and then separately booking a low-cost flight from there to Tangier.

In Tangier, we pick you up from the airport, sea port (Tangier Ville), or train/bus station and take you to your accommodation (if part of your package/booked).

Visa

Many nationalities can stay visa-free in Morocco for up to 90 days, getting the entry stamp upon arrival in Morocco.
