You can participate in this program both for the purpose of volunteering, and doing it as an internship. The organizations introduced below have qualified professionals who can supervise internships. If you need an internship that must be credited toward your studies, please let us know your schools/university’s requirements and we will identify the available organizations that meet those requirements.

Below, we introduce various organizations. You will carry out your volunteer placement or internship with one of these organizations. You are welcome to let us know your preferences regarding the host organization without obligation, and we will check availability. We can confirm your host organization even before you make a binding booking.

Sisters of Calcutta Kindergarten and Home

Around 20 single mothers with their toddlers aged 0 to 2 years live at the Sisters of Calcutta's kindergarten and home for single mothers in the old town of Tangier. In various rooms, the children play with their mothers, the nuns, and volunteers. Approximately 10 more single mothers bring their children every day from 8 am to 4 pm. Additionally, every Wednesday, the house is open to street children who can wash themselves and play there.

Volunteers engage with the children, mothers, and street children.

Street Children's Center in the Kasbah of Tangier

In the old town (Kasbah) of Tangier, DARNA operates an open house for children and adolescents. The center welcomes street children, and children and adolescents from disadvantaged backgrounds, but essentially, all children and adolescents can use the facility's offerings. These include a library with books and magazines, musical instruments, as well as various equipment and materials for upcycling, woodworking, paper, and cardboard crafting. Children can also come after school to do their homework at the center and receive support.

Volunteers assist in the library and engage with the children and adolescents.

You can also combine activities at this facility with tasks in the 5 other centers run by DARNA in Tangier, in the field of social work, empowerment, and capacity building, targeting women, girls, and adolescents.

Le Manège Kindergarten

Le Manège is a private French-speaking kindergarten in Tangier, led by a French pediatric nurse. The kindergarten caters to children aged 3 months to 3 years, divided into three groups: toddlers aged 3 to 18 months, children aged 2-3 years, and children aged 3-4 years.

In this professionally managed facility, children are introduced to the French language early on, and their independence, socialization, and creative development are promoted through play.

There are 8 staff members, including 3 educators, 4 kindergarten teachers, and a dance teacher who dances with the children once a week. There are different activity focuses every month, such as painting, collage, drawing, storytelling, music, etc.

The children also celebrate and prepare for celebrations of both French and Moroccan cultures such as Christmas and Aid-Al-Fitr.

Internships are possible for you at Le Manege if you are considering a career in childcare.

Working hours are Monday to Friday from 8 am to 12 pm and from 2 pm to 5 pm, with Wednesday mornings off. The kindergarten is closed in July and August. Additionally, there are 1-2 weeks of holidays at the end of October/beginning of November, beginning of March, end of April/beginning of May, and over Christmas.

The kindergarten is located in the city center near the Spanish and American international schools.

Getting there

You book a flight to Tangier/Tangier (TNG), where various airlines, such as Ryanair, Easyjet, Eurowings, Iberia, Vueling, Air Cairo, Brussels Airlines and others, fly.

Our recommendation: If you are travelling from Europe, also search for departure nearby airports in European neighboring countries. Often, the combination of train and flight tickets is the most cost-effective option. You can also fly to Casablanca or Fes, from where you can take a bus or train to Tangier. If you want to explore Andalusia, you can also fly to Malaga, Seville, or Jerez, take a bus to Algeciras from there, and then cross to Tangier by ferry. We can provide details on all these travel options.

If you're coming from another continent, you might want to consider booking a flight to one of the major European airports and then separately booking a low-cost flight from there to Tangier.

In Tangier, we pick you up from the airport, sea port (Tangier Ville), or train/bus station and take you to your accommodation (if part of your package/booked).
