Agriculture in Malta
Malta's land area is limited, but there is a variety of agricultural products focusing on traditional, high-quality, and niche goods.
These include vegetables (tomatoes, onions, lettuce, zucchini, cauliflower, peppers, potatoes), fruits (oranges, lemons, figs, prickly pears, grapes), olives (for table olives and olive oil production), as well as herbs like parsley, basil, rosemary, and thyme. In addition, sheep, goats, chickens, and rabbits are commonly raised.
A traditional Maltese cheese made from sheep's and goat's milk is Gbejna. High-quality wildflower and thyme honey are produced in Malta. Malta’s wine industry is growing, with local grape varieties such as Girgentina and Gellewza cultivated alongside international ones. Liqueurs are made from prickly pears and carob in Malta.
Many farms focus on organic farming.
Your Farm Internship in Malta
An internship on an organic farm in Malta gives you insight into Mediterranean organic agriculture and the opportunity to produce high-quality gourmet products in an environmentally friendly way.
Your tasks typically include soil preparation, planting, and caring for crops such as olives, grapes, citrus fruits, and vegetables like tomatoes and zucchini. You will engage in plant pruning and organic pest control to ensure healthy growth. Irrigation is a key part of the work, as the Mediterranean climate, particularly in summer, can be dry. Common tasks also include harvesting, sorting, and preparing the products for the market or local use. Additionally, maintaining the farm, such as repairing tools, fences, or irrigation systems, is part of everyday work. Some farms are also visited by tourists and locals, and you may assist with tours, interact with visitors, and support sales in the farm shop. Typically, you will work 30-40 hours per week.
All farms have internship supervisors with extensive experience in organic farming who are also certified in organic agriculture. They will provide explanations and guidance to maximize your learning experience.
Combine Internship and English Lessons
If you want to learn English during your agricultural internship, we recommend first participating in language lessons for at least one week and then starting your farm internship. Unfortunately, it is not feasible to combine the farm internship and English lessons simultaneously.
Booking Process
If you are flexible and are okay with us selecting an internship placement within the internship category you have chosen, you can book this program directly online on this page.
After your booking, please send us your CV/resume in English by email to
Alternatively, you can first send an inquiry and let us know your preferences, as well as, in the case of a mandatory internship, the requirements of your school or university (e.g., regarding tasks, hours, or supervision). We can then either confirm whether such an internship is available or, in some cases (but not always), already name a specific internship company/organisation. You would book only if you choose to accept the internship.
In both cases, you can secure your spot with a deposit of 100 EUR/USD. You pay the remaining amount only one month before the program starts.
Since the online booking of the accommodation can be a bit tricky due to different weekly rates depending on the season, we are happy to handle the exact calculation per day of stay for you. After letting us know your flight details and exact travel dates, you can then manually book the accommodation. We would then send you an invoice and a payment link.
