Horse Placement in Malta
The volunteering takes place with an NGO dedicated to rescuing horses that have been severely neglected or are at risk of slaughter. Annually, around 300 horses are imported into Malta, mainly for use as racehorses or in horse polo sports. When these horses can no longer be used for sport, either due to age or injury, their upkeep often becomes too costly for their owners, leading to neglect or slaughter. The organization rescues such horses, nurses them back to health, and tries to find them a permanent, loving home. Potential adopters must complete an adoption application, and all adoptions are conducted under a loan agreement to ensure that the horses are not resold or reused in racing sports. Approximately 80 horses are with the NGO at any given time, either permanently or temporarily, until an adoption can be done.
To fund its activities, the organization offers horse-related activities. These include swimming with horses in the summer, photoshoots with horses (e.g., at weddings), and horse rides for children.
In addition to their rescue and rehabilitation efforts, the organization actively promotes educational initiatives to raise awareness about horse welfare and the importance of responsible horse ownership. They also engage in various events and collaborations within the community to foster a culture of compassion and respect for animals across Malta.
Your tasks as a volunteer or intern
Your daily tasks include cleaning stables and paddocks, feeding, grooming, training, and exercising the horses. You also help with activities such as pony rides for children, photoshoots with horses, and community events.
If interested, you can also assist in the organization’s shop, where horse feed, hay, used horse equipment, and riding apparel are sold. Additionally, you can support the NGO with office tasks, such as communication with donors.
You typically are involved for 30–40 hours per week.
