Type of program

Volunteering

Due to Japan's authoritarian state education system, a significant number of children drop out. These children often attend schools that follow an alternative educational approach, known in Japan as "Free Schools." As a volunteer at a Free School, you support the lessons in an informal way in a relaxed, non-competitive environment. You are given a fair amount of freedom in how you can contribute for the benefit of the children.
Description

Alternative, "Free" schools in Japan

It is estimated that 1-2% of Japanese children drop out of the national compulsory education system. Even though some efforts were taking in reason year to address the issue, the Japanese public school system can still be described as authoritarean, imposing a high pressure on academic performance, and focusing on discipline and conformity, resulting in symptoms such as burnout and school refusal by certain children. Children who are "different" in their learning or behaviour patterns are often bullied by other students and not supported by teachers. It is also an often voiced complain about Japan's public schools that they fail to encourage free thinking and individual expression, not just by those who have turned their backs on the system.

Free schools aim to provide a more flexible and individualized learning environment that can cater to the unique needs of each student.

Free schools often do not follow the strict national curriculum mandated by the Ministry of Education. Instead, they offer a flexible and student-centered curriculum that allows students to explore subjects and activities that interest them. Teachers and staff work closely with students to identify their interests, strengths, and areas for growth, tailoring their educational experience accordingly.

Free schools strive to create a supportive and stress-free environment. The emphasis is on emotional well-being, social development, and fostering a love for learning, rather than on academic competition and standardized testing.

Your role as a volunteer at an alternative school

Volunteers assist with informal lessons. They may also engage students in creative projects, games, or outdoor activities such as gardening, excursions and visits that promote social interaction and personal growth. There is usually a high degree of freedom for volunteers to contribute based on their personal preferences and skills. They might, for instance, engage in sports, music, dance, crafts and arts, theater, or conduct experiments to explain scientific concepts. They might play games (including computer games), or teach the use of computers and technology. The role often involves fostering a safe and supportive space for students to build confidence and develop at their own pace. Volunteers also contribute by offering unique cultural perspectives, which helps broaden students' worldviews. You will make use of the English language.

Accommodation Options

Sharehouse in Kyoto

Our sharehouse in Kyoto is located in the Fushimi district in the south of Kyoto. From there, also destinations in Osaka, which forms a metropolitan region with Kyoto, are easily accessible by metro.

The house is a former residence with a shop in a traditional residential area. It features three dormitory rooms for eight people each (with a visual partition in the rooms, making each room more like two four-person rooms, further we try to separate by gender; however, this is not always possible and cannot be guaranteed), three twin rooms, two kitchens, a living room, three showers, two toilets, a small "powder room," and a covered outdoor seating area. Luggage can be stored at no extra cost. You can rent a bicycle at a low cost, and a coin-operated washing machine is available. Wi-Fi is accessible throughout the house.

In the same building, on the ground floor in the former shop space, you will find our support office, where you can easily meet our team members on weekdays. A small supermarket is just a minute's walk away, and a convenience store with an ATM is three minutes away. Nearby, along the Uji River, there is a large park.

The Fushimi district is known for its sake breweries and various temples and shrines, which are popular tourist attractions.
