Shelter for Boys Rescued from Child Labor
The shelter for boys rescued from child labor is run by a non-profit organization in Jaipur. Since 2019, it has provided temporary accommodation, food, medical care, basic education, and psychosocial support for up to 35 boys aged 6-18, staying at the shelter. Between 2019 and 2025, the shelter has taken in approximately 900 boys.
The goal is to locate the children's parents within six months. If successful, the boys are reintegrated into their families through the social welfare office. After their return, the respective state’s social authorities regularly monitor whether the child remains in the family environment and receives adequate care. If no parents are found, the boys are placed in an orphanage. Since the home was established, only 16 cases have remained where no family members could be identified. The organization employs a total of 22 staff members, 12 of whom work directly in the shelter.
Many of the boys come from economically weak regions of India, particularly West Bengal and Bihar. They were previously exploited in child labor in Jaipur, often in dangerous working environments such as metal workshops, the textile industry, restaurants, or the begging industry, where children are sent onto the streets to beg but must hand over their earnings to superiors. In metal workshops, they often work with open flames without any protective measures, suffering burns that, in some cases, lead to blindness. In these precarious working conditions, they earn only $10-20 per month and receive just one meal a day.
Girls are typically not involved by this form of child labor but instead work as domestic workers in households.
Tasks for Volunteers and Interns:
The boys’ shelter offers volunteers and interns (minimum age: 16) the opportunity to actively contribute to the care and development of the children. Responsibilities include:
Volunteers and interns work closely with the shelter director, who holds a master's degree in social work. However, direct access to confidential information about the boys is not permitted.
Other Projects of the Organization
In addition to the boys' shelter, the NGO runs other social projects where volunteers and interns can get involved:
This organization is suitable for volunteer work, where anyone aged 16 and older who is motivated to contribute can participate, as well as for supervised internships in fields such as social work, education, and related disciplines. The minimum duration is 2 weeks.
Afterschool Care and Education for Slum Children
The organization supports children from migrant worker families who come from villages in India's poorest states, such as West Bengal, Bihar, and Jharkhand, as well as Nepal. Most belong to the so-called drum player and beggar caste, who have no formal education and are highly marginalized in Indian society. These families lack official documents and a permanent residence in Jaipur, meaning they are not registered anywhere and the children are therefore excluded from public schools. The fathers usually work as laborers on construction sites, while the mothers work as domestic helpers. In many cases, the children must support their parents with these jobs, significantly limiting their future prospects.
To enable these children to access formal education, the NGO arranges sponsorships for school enrollment. For $600 per year, a child can attend a private English medium school. Currently, the organization supports 40 children through this program. Since many of the children do not speak English or Hindi but instead the regional languages from their home states, there is a significant language barrier that makes integration into the formal school system difficult. Most of these children are the first generation in their families to attend school.
Additionally, the NGO runs a free educational center attended by around 80 children aged 6-14. Classes take place daily from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM and are divided into different age groups: lower kindergarten, upper kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade. Here, the children receive lessons in English, Hindi, and science.
Beyond education, the organization also arranges regular health checkups and food support for families in need.
Tasks for Volunteers and Interns:
The organization offers volunteer opportunities for anyone aged 16 and older. Supervised internships in social work, education, and related fields are also available. The minimum commitment is one week. Responsibilities include:
Shelter for Girls in Difficult Circumstances
This facility in Jaipur provides a home for 35 girls aged 8-18 who are from challenging social backgrounds and are either HIV-positive or affected by HIV within their families. About half of the girls are orphans, while the other half still have one living parent. Social services place them in the facility as they would not receive adequate support in their original living conditions.
Many of the girls come from low-education families, often from slums, where their single parents or relatives are unable to properly care for them. A lack of awareness and understanding of HIV leads to neglected medication use and misinformation, sometimes resulting in the girls being ostracized from their families.
The facility is committed to providing the girls with a high-quality education. They attend a private English-language school from Monday to Saturday. Many later go on to university.
Tasks for Volunteers:
Volunteering at this facility is only available for female volunteers aged 16 and older. You will work daily from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM after the girls return from school. Responsibilities include:
This placement is suitable for volunteer placements for female volunteers aged 16 and above who are motivated and dedicated. The minimum duration is 1 week.
Home for Boys in Difficult Life Situations
The placement is taking place in a supervised residential facility for 35 boys aged 6 to 18. All of the boys are HIV-positive and come from poor families in rural Jaipur. Although they have parents or relatives, these caregivers often struggle to provide the necessary support due to a very low level of education, as well as stigma and discrimination.
At the facility, the boys receive not only medical care but also access to high-quality education and psychosocial support. They attend a private English-language school, which they reach by school bus from Monday to Saturday. Their daily routine is highly structured:
Additionally, the boys participate in creative workshops offered by local volunteers. For example, on Wednesdays, they receive guitar lessons during their sports and playtime (6-7 PM), and on Saturdays, they attend Bollywood dance classes.
Whenever possible, the boys visit their families, particularly during religious festivals and holidays.
Beyond medical care, which includes regular medication, the boys also have access to a psychologist and a social worker.
Tasks for Volunteers:
Volunteer shifts take place in the afternoons after the boys return from school. Key responsibilities include:
This placement is suitable for volunteer work, and anyone aged 16 and above who is motivated to contribute can participate. The minimum duration is one week.
Education for Women and Children in the Slum
Volunteering and internships are available at two slum education centers in Jaipur, run by a large non-profit organization that also operates a formal school, women's empowerment projects, and shelters for women and children. As a volunteer and/or intern, you will be involved in the following activities:
Volunteer placements are open to anyone aged 18 and above who is motivated to get involved. The minimum duration for volunteer placements is 2 weeks.
Additionally, supervised internships are available in the fields of social work, policy making, psychology (practical life counseling and behavioral counseling), and related disciplines.
Interns typically spend three days per week with field work and two days per week on office tasks. They are required to write weekly reports as well as a final report at the end of their internship. Interns receive supervision from the organization’s founder, who holds a Master’s degree in Social Work. The organization also has other professionals, including a psychologist, who can provide internship supervision. The minimum duration for supervised internships is 4 weeks.
Volunteers and interns may also visit and learn about other projects run by the organization, but they cannot actively participate in them. These include a children’s home and a women’s shelter that provides protection for survivors of domestic violence.
