Zanzibar's Most Famous Herbal Healer
"Dawa" means "medicine" in Swahili, and "Madawa" means medicine man. The role of a "Madawa," who makes medicine and healthy food from herbs, plants, and spices using traditional methods, is seen as equally important as the work of doctors practicing Western medicine in public hospitals. In fact, hospital staff often refer patients to the "Madawa" when they can't find a solution or improvement through Western treatment methods. He is often their "last resort."
Mohammed Said is a traditional "Madawa" from Zanzibar, in his fifth generation, known not only on the island but also in the Arab world for his remarkable knowledge of medicinal plants and their medical use. He is famously known as "Mr. Madawa," the number one herbal healer on the island. Regularly, patients travel from countries like Oman to Zanzibar just to see him. Said can provide numerous references from people who have experienced significant improvements through his herbal mixtures.
Mohammed Said learned his knowledge from his father and has continued to develop it independently. One of his sons, who studied medicine at university, now works with him and brings new ideas.
In Bububu, north of Zanzibar Town, Madawa runs his own garden where he grows his plants and herbs. His entire family, consisting of 4 wives and 38 children, helps in the processing and packaging of the herbal mixtures. These are sold in a shop in Bububu and another in Zanzibar Town. Madawa also runs a hospital in Bububu where he offers consultations and has several beds for inpatient care. The hospital is fully licensed by the Zanzibar Health Authority and cooperates with the public Mnazi Mmoja Hospital.
In addition to medicines, Madawa's family manufacture also produces herbal soaps, creams, teas, oils, and cooking mixtures from ingredients such as lemongrass, cloves, basil, cinnamon, or fennel. Mohammed Said's credo is "Prevention is better than cure," and he promotes the preventive effects of using herbs in diet and natural cosmetic products to prevent illnesses.
Madawa has also written a book about his knowledge, currently available only in Swahili. As a member of the "African Chamber of Commerce," Madawa actively advocates for fair trade with local farmers.
