Internship
Gain your first work experiences
On the tropical island of Zanzibar, you can combine several short-term internships, each lasting at least 1-2 weeks, from various fields and gain insights into different professions. You don’t need to be in training or studying, nor do you need work experience to participate. You can join from the age of 16.
Combine the following internships:
Teaching: Kindergarten and School (min. 1 week)
At the English-speaking kindergarten or St. Monica School in the heart of the historic old town of Zanzibar Town, you’ll assist local teachers. The children in the kindergarten are 4-6 years old, and in the school, they are 7-15 years old. You can teach a variety of subjects and also help with administrative and organizational tasks.
Internship at a Tour Operator (min. 2 weeks)
Zanzibar is a popular travel destination in the Indian Ocean, and tourism is Zanzibar’s most important economic sector. Local tour operators book hotels and domestic flights, offer airport pickups, and organize day trips such as spice farm tours, historical tours through Stone Town, and sailing boat tours. As an intern, you’ll work in the office of a local tour operator, mostly communicating with clients, creating travel itineraries, making bookings, and managing social media marketing.
Tropical Farm (min. 1 week)
Farmer Mr. Foum is not only a farmer but also a lecturer at an agricultural training institute. He will create a program for you so that you can see and learn as much as possible about tropical agriculture. On Mr. Foum’s farm, various tropical fruits and spices are grown, mushrooms are cultivated, and there is a demonstration and learning area with a collection of interesting tropical plants. On other farms, where you can also work as part of this internship, tropical vegetables are grown, and rice farming is practiced. An additional fee applies for an internship on the farm, which can be booked as an extra.
Marine Biology (min. 1 week)
Are you interested in the oceans and their inhabitants? In Zanzibar, you can participate in our coastal and marine conservation project in Matemwe and learn about coral reefs, sea turtles, mangroves, seagrass, marine mammals, and various other aspects of marine biology. Sustainable development for people living along the coast is another exciting aspect to consider. If you book "Marine Biology," an additional fee for transport costs within Zanzibar applies, which can be booked as an extra.
Nature and Species Conservation in the Rainforest (min. 1 week)
Zanzibar has a tropical rainforest, the Jozani Forest. Under the guidance of Deogratius, our wildlife management specialist, you’ll participate in various activities related to the conservation of Red Colobus monkeys and reptiles. There are also various tasks related to sustainable development with farmers living in the forest area and managing human-wildlife conflicts. If you book "Nature and Species Conservation in the Rainforest," an additional fee for transport costs within Zanzibar applies, which can be booked as an extra.
Football and Sports Coach (min. 1 week)
Is sports your hobby, and do you want to motivate and train others? At a football talent organization, you can coach football every Saturday and Sunday. On weekdays, you can train members of the Zanzibar Amateur Athletics Association in various athletic disciplines in the early morning and late afternoon when it's cooler, and you can also carry out various sports activities at schools and youth clubs. You can decide how intensively you want to participate as a coach and choose your preferred disciplines. Coaches will guide your internship.
Even more combination possibilities!
Mainland Tanzania is not far from Zanzibar and offers a completely different experience compared to Zanzibar. We also offer career orientation internships on the mainland of Tanzania. If you want to do internships in both Zanzibar and Kilimanjaro, contact us for a special combination price (currently not bookable directly via the website).
Support before and during your time in Zanzibar
At all locations, there are supervisors who will introduce, guide, and support you. This makes the career orientation internship also suitable for younger and less travel-experienced participants (from 16 years). You will also have a dedicated English-speaking contact person from our office team before and during your time in Zanzibar. Before your arrival, we recommend that you attend our online preparation session.
