Internship
Gain your first work experience
In Moshi Town, Tanzania, you can combine multiple short-term internships of at least one week each from various fields and gain initial insights into different career areas. You do not need to be in vocational training, university, or have any prior work experience to join these internships. Participation is possible from the age of 16.
Combine the following internship opportunities:
Teaching: Akili Kindergarten in Moshi Town (minimum 1 week)
The Akili Kindergarten in Moshi Town is attended daily by about 20 children. At the kindergarten, you can assist caregivers with teaching basic English, numbers, the alphabet, organizing singing, clapping, and circle games, sports activities, or dance, as well as cooking, dishwashing, and tidying up the kindergarten. You can also come up with your own activities and implement them (e.g., "Toothbrushing Workshop").
Teaching: Informal Schools in Moshi (minimum 1 week)
Informal schools are operated by NGOs, churches, and community initiatives and provide educational opportunities for children who, for various reasons, cannot attend formal schools. Younger children are prepared for admission exams to reintegrate into the formal state education system. For adolescents, the focus is typically on imparting basic life skills, such as reading, writing, arithmetic, English, general knowledge, and vocational skills like crafts, computer applications, agriculture, tailoring, etc.
As an intern, you teach some of these subjects together with local teachers, depending on your interests and abilities.
Daycare Centers for Children with Special Needs (minimum 1 week)
At a daycare center for children with special needs, you can focus your activities on special education (teaching) or physiotherapy/occupational therapy, depending on your interests. There are special educators and physiotherapists/occupational therapists who can share professional knowledge with you.
Social Work in Tanzania (minimum 1 week)
An internship is possible with an organization in Moshi that operates in the field of social work, focusing on children, women, families, or HIV patients. You will learn about the work of social workers and assist with home visits and in facilities where counseling and educational services are provided.
Veterinary Clinic (minimum 1 week)
Dr. Mnyoni runs a veterinary clinic in downtown Moshi, treating pets like dogs and cats, performing minor surgeries, and operating a pet supplies shop. About half of your working time will be spent at the clinic. The other half involves the treatment of farm animals such as cattle, pigs, chickens, goats, donkeys, and poultry, with the vet traveling to farms and grazing areas throughout the Kilimanjaro region, which you can accompany. You will observe, receive explanations, and assist. African wildlife is not treated as this falls under the responsibilities of national park administrations.
Tree Nursery and Reforestation at Kilimanjaro (minimum 1 week)
In a tree nursery in Moshi, seedlings of indigenous trees are cultivated. You will participate in all tasks involved in the nursery and tree planting campaigns, which take place on a larger scale during the rainy seasons (March to June and October to December). The nursery also produces handmade paper used for crafts such as lampshades, bookbinding, and decorative objects. As an intern, you can learn this craft.
Restaurant in Moshi
If you are interested in a career in the culinary field or simply in African cuisine, you can do a restaurant internship in Moshi. We cooperate with several restaurants in downtown Moshi catering to the local middle class and tourists, typically offering a mix of Tanzanian and international (Indian, Chinese, European) cuisine.
Agricultural Training Center and Production of Construction Materials (minimum 2 weeks)
The internship takes place at the Kilacha Production and Training Center near Holili, on the Tanzania-Kenya border, about 45km from Moshi. It is a vocational college for agriculture with around 500 students and a production area including maize, vegetables, fodder crops, fish farming, poultry, and pigs. The construction materials department produces gravel with a stone crusher and manufactures building and paving stones from concrete.
As an intern, you can participate in agricultural production, production of construction materials, preparation, and execution of training programs or combine activities based on your interests. Accommodation is provided on-site at the Kilacha Production and Training Center. An additional fee applies for the transfer from Moshi Town to Holili and back.
