Day 1
Pick-up from Zanzibar Airport or seaport and transfer to your accommodation.
Day 2
First day at your volunteer placement. You will be assisting in a kindergarten or primary school, playing with children or teaching them simple things. Around 3 PM, our coordinator will pick you up and give you a roughly 2-hour tour of Stone Town, the historic old town of Zanzibar Town.
Day 3
After spending the second morning at your placement, you will go on a "Spice Tour" in the afternoon, visiting a spice plantation. Here, you will see, smell, and taste exotic spices and tropical fruits.
Day 4
Full-day "Safari Blue" excursion. From Fumba in southern Zanzibar, you will explore the natural wonders of Menai Bay on a traditional dhow sailboat. You will enjoy a fruit snack on a sandbank, snorkel at a coral reef, swim in a lagoon, and have a beach barbecue with fish, lobster, chicken, vegetables, and a tropical fruit demonstration on an island. You can also learn to steer a "Ngalawa," the local fishermen's outrigger canoe. Dolphins are often seen in Menai Bay. You will sail back to Fumba in the late afternoon, with alcoholic drinks included.
Day 5
In the morning, you will assist in the kindergarten/school as a volunteer. The afternoon is at leisure for you to explore Stone Town alone or with other volunteers. The many small shops are perfect for souvenir shopping.
Day 6
Morning volunteering at your placement. In the afternoon, you will participate in a workshop at the Zanzibar Cultural Arts Centre. Local artisans will lead the workshop, which may include paper making, candle making, soap making, painting, making necklaces from paper beads, or screen printing a T-shirt.
Day 7
Full-day excursion: The day starts with a visit to Jozani Forest National Park, known for its unique Zanzibar Red Colobus Monkeys. Besides the monkey colonies, you will see impressive rainforest plants and trees and take a walk through the mangroves.
You will have lunch at Jozani Forest Camp and in the afternoon, together with other volunteers, participate in an environmental and coastal conservation volunteer activity, such as planting mangroves. In the late afternoon, you will be brought back to Zanzibar Town.
Day 8
Return journey, transfer to Zanzibar Airport or seaport.
Please note: You can book the program to start on any date, but depending on other participants' bookings, we might adjust the program order to allow you to enjoy excursions with other travelers. Depending on your start date, the days that fall on weekends may vary, during which your volunteer placement may be closed. We would then adjust the program so you can do the included excursions on the weekend. During school holidays, we might need to arrange alternative volunteer activities.
Your Volunteer Work
You will volunteer in a kindergarten or primary school in Zanzibar Town, assisting local educators. You can play with the children, teach them simple things like the alphabet, or conduct singing and clapping games. You can bring your own ideas and any materials needed from home.
