The third week is spent on the mainland of Tanzania, including a 5-day safari in the northern national parks (Lake Manyara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire), and you will overnight in a Maasai village.
Description

World Adventure Itinerary

Day 1

Pick-up from Zanzibar Airport or seaport and transfer to your accommodation.

Day 2

First day at your volunteer placement. You will be assisting in a kindergarten or primary school, playing with children or teaching them simple things. Around 3 PM, our coordinator will pick you up and give you a roughly 2-hour tour of Stone Town, the historic old town of Zanzibar Town.

Day 3

After spending the second morning at your placement, you will go on a "Spice Tour" in the afternoon, visiting a spice plantation. Here, you will see, smell, and taste exotic spices and tropical fruits.

Day 4

Full-day "Safari Blue" excursion. From Fumba in southern Zanzibar, you will explore the natural wonders of Menai Bay on a traditional dhow sailboat. You will enjoy a fruit snack on a sandbank, snorkel at a coral reef, swim in a lagoon, and have a beach barbecue with fish, lobster, chicken, vegetables, and a tropical fruit demonstration on an island. You can also learn to steer a "Ngalawa," the local fishermen's outrigger canoe. Dolphins are often seen in Menai Bay. You will sail back to Fumba in the late afternoon, with alcoholic drinks included.

Day 5

In the morning, you will assist in the kindergarten/school as a volunteer. The afternoon is at leisure for you to explore Stone Town alone or with other volunteers. The many small shops are perfect for souvenir shopping.

Day 6

Morning volunteering at your placement. In the afternoon, you will participate in a workshop at the Zanzibar Cultural Arts Centre. Local artisans will lead the workshop, which may include paper making, candle making, soap making, painting, making necklaces from paper beads, or screen printing a T-shirt.

Day 7

In the morning, you will be driven to Jozani Forest National Park, known for its endemic "Zanzibar Red Colobus Monkeys". In addition to the monkey colonies, you can view impressive plants and trees of the rainforest and take a walk through the mangroves.

You will have lunch at the Jozani Forest Camp and in the afternoon, you will participate in environmental and coastal conservation volunteer activities there, such as planting mangroves.

You can choose whether to spend the second week at the Mother Nature Camp in the Jozani rainforest or at the Mother Nature Camp on the beach in Matemwe.

If you choose the rainforest location, you will have dinner at the Mother Nature Camp and stay there overnight.

If you choose the beach location, you will be picked up in the late afternoon and taken to Matemwe. You will then have dinner there and move into one of our furnished tents at the Mother Nature Camp Matemwe.

Days 8 - 14

You will be a regular volunteer either at the Mother Nature Camp Jozani (rainforest) or at the Mother Nature Camp Matemwe (beach).

You can read more about the program activities and accommodations at both locations here:

Day 15

Transfer to Zanzibar Airport for your flight to Kilimanjaro (JRO; flight has to be booked separately and is not included in the package). Upon arrival at JRO airport, you will be picked up and taken to Moshi. Accommodation will be at Siarick Cottages (single room; in case of 2 or more persons booking together, twin room accommodation), where you will receive a briefing for the safari starting the next morning. Dinner is also provided at Siarick Cottages.

Day 16

The 5-day safari begins in Moshi (5 days/4 nights). On the first day, we drive from Moshi to Lake Manyara National Park (approximately 4 hours drive). The lake is impressively framed by the heights of the East African Rift. Monkeys swing from branch to branch in the high trees of the rainforest, and elephants stand in the shade of acacia trees. You typically see many zebras, impalas, giraffes, hippos, and water birds. Lunchbox en route. Dinner at the accommodation (camping or simple lodge).

Day 17

On the second day, we drive through the Olduvai Gorge to Serengeti National Park. The Olduvai Gorge is a bizarre landscape formed over millions of years by tectonic shifts. Significant remains of early humans have been found here, crucial for understanding human evolution. On the way to the Serengeti, we see many wild animals such as wildebeests, zebras, gazelles, giraffes, elephants, antelopes, monkeys, and various bird species. A lunchbox is provided en route. In the late afternoon, we reach our accommodation in the Ikoma area, where we have dinner and overnight.

Day 18

On the third day, we visit the world-renowned Serengeti National Park, one of the most famous national parks in the world and the oldest in Tanzania. The Serengeti is one of Africa’s most complex and least disturbed ecosystems, transitioning from dusty summer dryness to lush green winters and springs. The Serengeti offers a unique experience with large herds of buffalo and wildebeests, elephants, giraffes, eland antelopes, impalas, and Grant's gazelles. On the way, we pass through the bizarre crater highlands of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where about 1.7 million wildebeests, 260,000 zebras, and 470,000 gazelles migrate between December and June. Lunchbox en route. Overnight again in the Ikoma area.

Day 19

On the fourth day, we drive to the Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest unfilled volcanic crater, one of the planet’s great natural wonders. The first view into the Ngorongoro Crater is an unforgettable experience for most visitors. Not only is it home to the endangered black rhino, but also lions, leopards, hyenas, antelopes, and flamingos. Picnic lunch beside the “hippo pool” in the impressive crater interior. Then we return for dinner and overnight (camping or simple lodge) in our accommodation in Karatu.

Day 20

On the fifth safari day, we visit Tarangire National Park. The landscape of Tarangire is different from other northern Tanzanian national parks, with many baobab trees and dense bushes. Many elephants and tree-climbing lions live here. Lunchbox en route. In the afternoon, we drive to a Maasai village near Kilimanjaro Airport. The Maasai will show you their traditional dance, herds, houses, crafts, and school, giving you insight into their culture and daily life. You sleep in a real Maasai house or alternatively in a tent that we provide. Dinner in the Maasai village (Swahili cuisine).

Day 21

Breakfast in the Maasai village. You can milk cows with the Maasai and then accompany the Maasai children with a herd to the river. Full board is included. In the afternoon of the second day, we drive back to Moshi, accommodation, and dinner at Siarick Cottages in Moshi Town.

Day 22

Transfer to JRO Airport for your return flight.

Please note:
You can book the program to start on any date, but depending on other participants' bookings, we might adjust the program order to allow you to enjoy excursions with other travelers. Depending on your start date, the days that fall on weekends may vary, during which your volunteer placement may be closed. We would then adjust the program so you can do the included excursions on the weekend. During school holidays, we might need to arrange alternative volunteer activities.

Your Volunteer Work

You will volunteer in a kindergarten or primary school in Zanzibar Town, assisting local educators. You can play with the children, teach them simple things like the alphabet, or conduct singing and clapping games. You can bring your own ideas and any materials needed from home.

Anyone can participate. The program is suitable for travelers of all ages.

Program start

You can book the program for any start date.

Getting there

Please note: The start of this program is in Zanzibar (ZNZ) and the program ends in Kilimanjaro (JRO). It is ideal if you book your international flight, so that arrive in Zanzibar and depart from Kilimanjaro. Some airlines have this on offer. Alternatively, you can book international flights also to Dar-es-Salaam (DAR), but then you need to book domestic flights to get to and depart from your project sites.

Visa

Participation in this program is possible for up to 90 days with a regular tourist visa, which most nationalities can purchased for 50 USD directly upon entry at the Zanzibar Airport. Only US Americans have to pay 100 USD for the visa. Some nationalities (e.g. South Africans) do not need a visa to enter Tanzania.

Some nationalities might need to apply for their visa in advance and might need supporting documents that we can provide.

For entry into Zanzibar, a mandatory health insurance is required, for which a one-time fee of 44 USD applies for any duration of stay of up to 90 days.

Accommodation Options

In Zanzibar Town, you can choose between shared accommodation (dormitory, double room, single room without meals) or a host family (including breakfast and dinner).

Shared Accommodation

We operate two World Unite! shared apartments in Zanzibar Town. If you choose shared accommodation, we will assign one to you based on availability and proximity to your internship or volunteering location. Both flat shares offer a comparable standard of accommodation. One apartment is located in Baghani, and the other one is in Migombani.

Migombani

The spacious apartment in Migombani is located on the 2nd upper floor with views of the blue ocean. It has its own kitchen, toilets, bathrooms, and a communal living room. There is also a spacious garden. You can choose between 4-share rooms (each with 2 bunk beds), double rooms, and single rooms. The 4-share rooms have their own en-suite bathrooms, while the double/single rooms share a bathroom and toilet with other residents. The beds/bedrooms are equipped with mosquito nets, a wardrobe or chest of drawers, and a fan. Bed linen is provided, but please bring your own towels. The bathrooms have western flush toilets and cold showers, which can be refreshing given the temperatures in Zanzibar. The shared kitchens are equipped with electric or gas stoves and a basic set of kitchen utensils for cooking and eating. The shared living room has a sofa and dining table. There is also a communal washing machine in the house. For security purposes, the windows are barred, and a night watchman is present at night. Shopping and dining options are within easy walking distance.

Baghani

The Baghani apartment is located on the first floor of a historic building in the Baghani area of Stone Town. It offers four fully furnished bedrooms suitable for single and double occupancy. The kitchen is equipped with a gas and electric stove, refrigerator, and functional kitchen equipment. There are two bathrooms with cold showers and western water toilets. Bed linen is provided, but please bring your own towels. Each room has a ceiling fan and mosquito nets. There are many dining options available in Stone Town.

Host Families

Staying with a host family provides you with a unique opportunity to gain a more in-depth insight into the culture and society of Zanzibar. We collaborate with several host families in Zanzibar Town who can be described as belonging to the upper-middle class of Zanzibar. Most of our participants consider their houses to be absolutely suitable to be accommodated at. The houses often have two tiled bathrooms, one for the use of the parents of the family, and another one for the children and guests like yourself. Please note that hot water may not always be available. The houses are equipped with either Western-style toilets or Arab squat toilets with flushing water.

The host families provide two meals per day, typically breakfast and dinner, which usually consist of Zanzibari-Arabic dishes. Breakfast may include deep-fried donuts and chapati, while dinner often features pilau rice and biryani, accompanied by tea, boiled water, or homemade fruit juice. Vegetarian meals are available upon request. The families typically employ domestic helpers to assist with cooking, cleaning, and laundry. They usually have a fridge that you can also use. In the living rooms of these families, you will often find decorative Arabic curtains, ornamental objects, a stereo system, and a large flat-screen TV. Additionally, the families may own a used Japanese car. However, in order to purchase those items, the family often had to make savings during many years, and the family may, even though it might not look like that, still face financial difficulties, such as financing their children's higher education. They often only use the car for absolutely necessary journeys as petrol is expensive.

In Jozani (rainforest location), you will live in a furnished 6-person tent (shared) with full board (breakfast, lunch, dinner).

Mother Nature Tropical Rain Forest Conservation Camp in Jozani

Our World Unite! Forest Camp is located right next to Jozani Forest National Park in southern Zanzibar, within the area of Kitogani village. It offers exclusive accommodations for volunteers in our Mother Nature Program. The camp is set within a pristine forest environment.

There are three comfortable safari tents (6m x 3m x 3.5m high), each accommodating up to six participants in three bunk beds with mosquito nets. The tents are built on an elevated platform and are protected from sun and rain by a fixed thatched roof made of palm leaves. Large screened windows allow for good ventilation, creating a comfortable indoor temperature. Each participant has a lockable storage cabinet inside the tent.

Attached to each tent is a separate building with a toilet and a shower offering both hot and cold water. In front of each tent, participants can relax on a wooden veranda with chairs made from coconut wood, enjoying the natural surroundings. Additionally, the camp features a large communal terrace for relaxing, working, and dining.

The camp kitchen prepares three meals per day for participants, and a filtered drinking water station is available. The camp’s garden is home to fascinating tropical ornamental plants and fruit trees.

Volunteers also have access to a washing machine. Tent lighting and phone charging stations are powered by solar energy, while solar water heaters provide warm water for showers. Shower wastewater is filtered through a small wetland system with layers of gravel and plants, including rushes and yam roots, before being absorbed into the ground or evaporating. Creative recycling ideas, such as lampshades and curtains made from recycled plastic bottles, can be found throughout the camp—crafted by World Unite! volunteers.

The camp employs three security guards who ensure safety around the clock. A safe is available for storing valuables.

In Matemwe (beach location), you will live in a furnished 4-person tent (shared) with full board (breakfast, lunch, dinner).

The camp is located only a 3-minute walk from one of the most beautiful beaches in Zanzibar, where sea turtles also lay their eggs. The grounds of our camp were designed according to the principles of permaculture and sustainable construction to maintain and restore biodiversity on the site.

There are eight permanent tents, each equipped with two bunk beds. The tents can be booked for double or 4-share occupancy. Each tent has wardrobes with a lockable compartment for each participant, a small refrigerator, a fan, electric light and sockets, including USB ports. All tents are located under a fixed thatched roof covered with palm fronds on an elevated wooden platform, designed in a rustic African style. Mosquito nets are provided.

Sanitary facilities are located in a building between the tents and are shared by the participants. They include six showers with solar-heated hot and cold water and six environmentally friendly evapotranspiration toilets. Our solar collector is supplemented by an electric heater during the rainy season, so hot water is available year-round.

The roof terrace of our main building and the covered terrace in front of it are used as communal areas for meals, project work and leisure. Meals are prepared by our two chefs in a fully equipped restaurant kitchen and meet international hygiene standards. Chilled drinking water is available from a water filter device. Volunteers can use our office space for work that requires a computer. Free, unlimited Wi-Fi and a washing machine are provided, and there is 24-hour security personnel. Valuables can be stored in a safe.

In collaboration with our permaculture expert, we have developed a system to optimize water consumption as much as possible. We collect rainwater from the roofs, which is used, for example, as a backup for the showers. The gray water is filtered and used for our plants. We use an evaporation toilet system, which is a simple but effective solution for the biological treatment and reuse of black water as fertilizer for our banana garden. We also have an aquaponics system on the premises.

In Moshi Town, you will have a single room incl. dinner and breakfast at Siarick Cottages. If two or more people book together, accommodation will be in a double/twin room.

Siarick Cottages is a new and well-maintained guesthouse, designed in Tanzanian style and operated by a local family in the Kiboroloni area of Moshi Town. The 16 rooms, available for single, double, or triple occupancy, all come with private bathrooms featuring hot showers and toilets. Siarick also uses solar lighting, which is very useful in case of electricity cuts at night. The premises are fenced and there is 24-hour security.

You can choose between 3-share room accommodation (three single beds) and double rooms with other participants of the same gender or single room accommodation.

On safari, you will stay in a camping tent or simple lodge (single room or single tent). If two or more people book together, accommodation will be in a double/twin room or 2-person tent.

Camping Option

You will sleep in small camping tents at designated campsites with shared sanitary facilities including toilets and showers. There is security at the campsites. Your tent will be set up for you. A cook will prepare your meals at the campsite: breakfast, dinner, and a lunch box while on safari. All camping equipment, including tents, mattresses, and sleeping bags, is provided. It is generally possible to charge your phones, cameras, etc., at the campsites, but please be aware that electricity in remote locations is not always reliable and may not be available at all times. It is a beautiful experience to sleep in a tent in the middle of nature, hearing all the animal sounds at night and feeling deeply connected to Africa.

Simple Lodge Option (for an additional charge)

Simple lodges are basic, functional accommodations. You will stay either in a room in a bungalow/building or in a large safari tent, where you can stand up, equipped with a regular bed and other furniture, and with its own en-suite toilet and shower. Meals are the same as in the camping option.

Please note that on the safari, the third night is always "camping," as there is no simple lodge available in the area where we will be on the third night. In this case, we will provide a field bed in your camping tent.

There is electricity in your room, but please be aware that electricity in remote locations is not always reliable and may not be available at all times. Hot showers may or may not be available.

In the Maasai village, you will stay in a simple Maasai house (single occupancy) or tent (single occupancy). If two or more people book together, they can share.

You live in a typical Maasai house. Traditional Maasai houses are round or rectangular, built from a mixture of mud and dung applied around a wooden skeleton structure, similar to a half-timbered house. During heavy rains, such as during the rainy season, the walls can soften and rainwater can leak through the roof. A fire for cooking, heating, and drying the mud structure is inside the Maasai house without a chimney. There are neither windows nor doors. The bed is made of wood and branches, covered with Maasai blankets called "Shuka." Small crawling creatures can freely enter the house.

You have the option to stay in a camping tent, provided by us along with a sleeping bag and mattress, for the entire duration of your stay or just for certain nights.
