Video production of educational videos  about underwater worlds and coastal

 

In East Africa there are currently radical changes taking place in society and ways of living. Poverty makes people move from the inner country to the coasts, because they regard the sea as a free resource which can be used by everyone. These people don’t have a traditional relationship to the sea and therefore have very limited knowledge of how the sea and the coast can be used in a responsible and sustainable way. Due to poverty and the increasing demand for fish destructive fishing methods are being used such as dynamite fishing. Also fine-meshed fishing nets come into operation. Furthermore, living corals are being exploited for their use as construction materials; mangroves are being deforested for their use as firewood and wildlife from the coral reefs is collected to be sold as tourist souvenirs.

 

The internship in video production will take place in a research institute for marine sciences. The institute produces educational videos which have the purpose of teaching local fishermen and coast dwellers about responsible fishing methods and the importance of the conservation of coral reefs, beaches and mangrove forests.

 

The institute disposes of a well-equipped media studio for video productions. Besides educational videos the institute also produces documentations of its research projects. Part of the job is on-site videotaping for instance at coral reefs, lagoons, coastal zones, mangrove forests, seaweed farms or on the open sea. The institute can make use of modern underwater cameras and underwater lights. Also the equipment for post-production is up-to-date. For the time being, videos are being edited on a modern Apple workstation with Final Cut Pro.

 

The intern should have expertise in professional video production and post-production and should be familiar with Final Cut Pro. Diving skills are of advantage, but not a requirement.
