Swahili (also called Kiswahili) is the most widespread language in East Africa. About 90 million people in Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Congo and Mozambique speak Swahili.
 
In terms of structure, Swahili clearly belongs to the family of Bantu languages. However, the vocabulary includes words of Arabic, Persian, Indian, English and, to a small extent, Portuguese origin. This blend reflects the evolution of Swahili at the East African coast, where foreign seafaring traders blended with local populations to create the unique Swahili culture and language.

We offer language courses for Swahili in Moshi/Tanzania and in Zanzibar. The lessons focus on the ability to communicate and oral expression.  

You will have your own private lessons given by a trained and experienced language teacher and native speaker. In Moshi/Kilimanjaro, classes will be given at the YMCA, in Zanzibar at the teacher's private home in Stone Town. Our teachers are typically Alice in Moshi and Mama Aunt in Zanzibar.

It is also possible to take classes together as a small group, however the rate per person will not change in this case compared to the rate of private lessons.

All levels are possible from beginner to advanced. 

If you are already our trouble-free package participant, you can for instance take intensive lessons prior to starting your volunteer or internship placement, or you can accompany your volunteer/internship activity with Swahili lessons of less intensity.

In Moshi, host family on full board:

1 Person: 190 €

2 Persons: 200 € p.p.

In Zanzibar, host family on full board:

1 Person: 350 €
2 Persons: 340 € p.p.
