introduced at the organisation. At around 3 pm you will be picked up again and
you will be given a 2-hours orientation walk through the town centre of Moshi.

Morning spent at the volunteer organisation, at around 3 pm visit to a tannery and workshop for handcrafts made from leather and horn, where disabled people work. You will get insights into traditional and innovative techniques of leather processing.
Day 4
Day trip to Materuni Waterfall and
Materuni Village. The Materuni waterfall with a height of almost 150 m (500 ft)
is the highest and most impressive waterfall at the slopes of Kilimanjaro of the
Moshi area. From Materuni Village we will walk some 30 minutes to the waterfall.
The walk itself is interesting, as you will see some smaller waterfalls and lots
of waterways which are part of the irrigation system of the local farmers who
grow coffee, bananas and many other fruits and vegetables.
At the waterfall, you can even refresh in the cool and
crystal clear water – don’t forget to bring your swimwear! When we return, we
will have a late lunch at Materuni village and then we will do a small walk
around the village to see the typical life of the Chagga tribe. The village,
located at a height of around 1300 m (4300 ft) above sea level is set within a
dramatic landscape of high rises and deep valleys, all covered by tropical rain
forest.
Day 5
This day will start with work
at your volunteer organization. In the afternoon there will be a guided tour
through the rice fields outside of Moshi town and through a forest which is
inhabited by many monkeys.
Day 6
Last day at you
volunteer organization (until around 3 pm). Afternoon at
leisure.
Day 7
In the morning drive from Moshi to
Lake Manyara National Park (the drive takes around 4 hours). The lake is
impressively framed by the outcrops of the East African Rift Valley. In the high
trees of the ground water forest, monkeys swing from tree to tree and elephants
are enjoying the shade of the acacia trees. You will also see many zebras,
impalas, giraffes, hippos and waterfowls. In the late afternoon, drive to
Highview Hotel Karatu (full board on safari).
Day
8
After breakfast, 30 minutes drive from Highview Hotel to
Ngorongoro Crater. Ngorongoro Crater is the largest non-flooded volcanic crater
of the earth, one of the most important natural wonders of our planet. It is not
only the home of the endangered black rhino, but also there are lions, leopards,
hyenas, antelopes and flamingos. We will have picnic lunch near the “Hippo
Pool”. At late afternoon return drive to Moshi.
Days 9-11
Time spent at you volunteer
organization. Afternoons at leisure.
Days 12-13
Now you have already spent almost 2 weeks at Kilimanjaro. It’s really time to get to know the mountain better! We will spend 2 days inside the Kilimanjaro National Park and will do a partial climb!
On the first day we will approach the mountain from the west, driveing with a car up to Shira Plateau at a height of 3200 meters (10,500 feet). This is the Kilimanjaro plateau from which the three peaks Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira arise. From the plateau you can have spectacular views into the East African Rift Valley, Mt. Meru and the village of Longido. We will hike on the Shira Plateau for 5-7 hours from the Shira Gate to Shira Camp (3850 m above sea level), where we will camp. On the second day we will descend following the Machame Route down to 1,800 m where we will be picked up by a car and brought back to Moshi.
