ZARA Charity - Umbrella organisation to support charitable NGOs in Tanzania

The ZARA Charity is the charitable branch of ZARA Tanzania Adventures, a leading tour operator of Tanzania. A part of the revenue from the tour company business goes directly to the completely independent ZARA Charity which has the aim to give a sound financial ground to a small group of active charitable NGOs from all subject areas (education, social, environment, culture).

The ZARA Charity is also supporting these organisations in getting and handling donations (for instance through offering the possibility of online donations through the ZARA Charity website http://www.zaracharity.com) and in auto-generating sustainable incomes for instance through the integration of the NGO's work into offers of "voluntourism" or agricultural production. Please see the example of the Chicken Farming Projekt which was done by our ZARA Charity volunteer Sebastian for the Kilimanjaro Orphanage.

The ZARA Charity tries to find out the real and realistic needs of the associated charitable organisations in order to distribute the existing funds as "just" as possible. Also it is controlling whether the funds are being used to their full extent in the intended way, reaching those in need.

Volunteers can participate in the following activities:

* Public relations/marketing, particularly using the internet (Writing texts and publishing photos on the ZARA Charity website, on the individual websites of the NGOs, on blogs), but also targeting tourists in Tanzania

* Regular visits to the supported NGOs and staying in close contact with their directors in order to understand the real needs of the organisations

* Planning of the use of donations; sharing funds between several organisation to cover the most urgents needs; purchase of materials for the organisations using donations, controlling the use of funds/donated materials and writing reports about their use

* Communication with donors and inqueries

* Creative planning and implementation of ideas how the supported NGOs can generate sustainable income on their own

The whole area of including NGOs into the field of tourism offers potential for expansion. For instance, objects which are being made by charitable organisations such as women groups weaving baskets or bags could be sold as tourist souvenirs; tourists could visit projects of environmental conservation as part of their travel itinerary in order to get an insight into the environmental challenges of the country and a part of the money the tourists pay could be used to fund the NGO's work. Many ideas are possible. The ZARA Charity and ZARA as a tour company are open for any suggestions and will provide support.

Anyone who thinks that he or she can contribute something useful to the aims and objectives of the Charity can be considered to volunteer with the ZARA Charity.
