Teaching at public and private schools
In Moshi/Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar and Pemba we can arrange internships and volunteering at public and private formal schools.
In Moshi/Kilimanjaro you can teach at a public Primary of Secondary School. You have to tell us which subjects you want to (an are able to) teach, together with a local teacher or on your own, and to which age group of pupils. Then the ministry of education will choose a suitable school for you within Moshi urban district. It is possible to teach all age groups, from pre-primary to final year classes, either on your own or assisting a local teacher.
This option is available for students of educational sciences and professional volunteer teachers. Typical subjects to be taught are maths and English, but generally all subjects are possible. There is an explicit need for interns and teachers who can teach science subjects at secondary school level.
As these are formal schools and therefore all participants have to teach according to the Tanzanian syllabus. A briefing will take place upon arrival. Class sizes are up to 70 students.
In Zanzibar, there is the possibility to teahc at the Primary and Secondary School of Uzi Island. Read more about Uzi Island here.
Further, there is the possibility to teach at church-run Primary Schools in Zanzibar, either at St. Monica school or St. Joseph school in Stone Town. These Primary Schools are not much different from public Primary Schools, religious topics are not given priority and pupils of various religions (Christians, Muslims and Hindus) are joining the same classes.
Due to a special agreement between the church an the immigration authorities, interns and volunteers who stay for up to 90 days in Tanzania, do not need a Residence Permit for teaching at the church-run primary schools. For this reason, our trouble-free package in this case is only 250 € instead of the usual 500 €.
In Moshi, there is additionally the possibility to teach "Special needs children". One school has special classes for mentally handicapped children and children with strong learning disabilities. These classes will take place 4 times per week for half a day. The other school has special primary school classes for deaf and visually impaired children which take place 5 days per week for the whole day. It is also possible that volunteers/intern can combine teaching special needs children and teaching regular students.
Every year in September there will be national examinations and there will be only limited classes. Additionally, there will be school holidays from beginning of December to beginning of January during which there will be no classes.
